As a Filipino who does not own one I'm jealous you own it. (The last one I know of/have seen was given to my cousin's husband). It's tradition that it passes from father to son/son in law. Once you're married off it becomes your responsibility to protect and you're passed one of these down from father to son.

That's such a cool tradition! Makes me wish I had found something like it when I visited a few years ago, for my dad. Though, I did get a custom, left-handed machete made while I was there and bring it back for him. They're proud of their blades over there! I had to take it out of my bag to fly, but everyone was just appreciative that I was bringing a machete home.

Thats an Old style Hilt . Tausug people dont do that intricate wire bind anymore. They can still do that type of Pommel tho. The descendants I think forgot how to . I have 2 Barongs myself and a few Moro Weapons. Not as old as that Barong. Check out SULU PAKUKUS KZread page for modern Barongs that look like that as well.

Sheesh. You are lucky. Better buy a good polish to buff it back to mirror finish. The better you take care of it the more luck comes into your life. Old blades have a protective spirit. It grows stronger by taking care of it. If you want it super strong - you might have to do some prayers.
