    I like how their job is basically to kick each other's ass but in the end they still care about each other's wellbeing. Sam technically offered to kick his own ass so Ralph could have a day off. Now THAT'S friendship.

    I always saw it as repersenting their jobs in nature, the wolf attacks the sheep the sheep dog defends the sheep. But at the end of the day they're just doing what nature created them to do, it's not personal. Animals don't know how to be personal, wolfs don't eat sheep to be mean, dogs don't attack wolfs because they are cruel. It's just the roles nature gave them and in this their roles are repersented by having jobs.

    Honestly, I love how the cartoonists managed to make Ralph _COMPLETELY_ different from Wile E. Coyote even with their extremely similar designs just by giving Ralph such an originally-different personality from Wile E. Like there is such a _huge_ contrast between Wile E's sheer inability to stop and chill due to his suicidal determination as opposed to Ralph begrudgingly facing Sam Sheepdog just to pay rent lmao.

    thats how i see it, when they're on the cartoon and the cartoon is running, they're 'on the job' and thus clock in/clock out clock in (cartoon's beginning) and clock out (cartoon's end) while on the job they treat each other as enemies as is their role/job description, once off the clock or on lunch break, they're buddies cause they know how hard a job they got and they respect each other because of it. It's hard being a cartoon character sometimes, you see the abuse cayote gets?

    I used to think these were Wile E. Coyote cartoons when he needed a break from The Runner Runner. Just Like When Sylvester takes a break from Tweety in some cartoons by chasing Speedy Gonzales or Hippety Hopper with his son Sylvester Jr. But now I fond out it's a total different character named Ralph Wolf with his own series of cartoons with Sam Sheepdog.

  • @kingandrewcecil348

    @kingandrewcecil348

    Actually those instances where Wile E. Coyote takes a break from chasing the Road Runner you're talking about are all those Wile E. Coyote & Bugs Bunny cartoons. In these Bugs VS Wile E. cartoons, Wile E. speaks with an upper-class British accent, and takes on the role of the arrogant self-proclaimed "super genius" who attempts to catch and eat Bugs for his supper, only to fail due to Wile E. 's own arrogance backfiring on him. But in the last of the five Bugs/Wile E. cartoons "Hare-Breadth Hurry" (1963), it follows the Road Runner cartoon format, with Bugs standing in for the Road Runner and Wile E. in a non-speaking role. This alternate personna of Wile E. is re-used in New Looney Tunes when he is paired with Bugs Bunny.

Sam, on the other hand, is there to see if the training is paying off, and to see if he still has what it takes to be a bonafied sheepdog, not to mention keep Ralph on HIS toes.

    My favourite bit of the Ralph and Sam cartoons was the ending of one, I think the final cartoon, where they walked home together in the sunset, with a silhouetted Ralph putting his arm around Sam saying "Nice day, eh Sam?" and Sam's reply "Yep, it's great to be alive Ralph" (or something along those lines - as I realize it's the final bit of this clip). I've always loved that their dynamic together at work is just that, work. But at the end of the day, they're good friends and the fact that what happens at work is nothing personal, it's simply what they have to do.

    Remember watching a few of these as a kid. Loved them when I was young, but now that Ive been out in the world with a full time job myself, gotta say I have a newfound appreciation for how they handled this part of Looney Tunes. The interactions between Sam and Ralph off the clock really resonate with how the 9-5 grind is, and how what happens on the clock is just to support what happens off the clock. In the end a job is a job, and while some want to make a job their life, that separation between joy and work is important to remember.
