As a Student and graduate of Eastside High School I can say that Mr. Clark was a Godsend to us all. I had the privilege to be there for a full 4 years with Mr. Clark from 1983-1987. My mom was really worried about me attending Eastside. She actually sent my older sister to Kennedy High which was all the way across town. She had to us a relative's address just so she could send her there. That's how much she did not want my sister in Eastside. When she heard that Mr. Clark was taken over she knew it would be alright to send me to Eastside. A lot of what I learned from him I carry with me today. Will love him forever. RIP Joe Louis Clark.

It's wonderful to hear from his students. This movie might be embellished by Hollywood a bit but if the real life Joe Clark was half as inspiring as Morgan Freeman portrayed he was a genuine asset to your community and more educators in America should emulate him and embrace his standards. Thank you!

I was a high school student when these events took place. I did not live in NJ, but 30 minutes away in NY & remember hearing some of the controversial student expulsions on the news while getting ready for school in the morning. A few years later when I saw the movie, I loved it. Even decades later, if I see it on, I must watch it. Gets me in the feels every time.

I never seen these interviews but my favorite movie ever from morganm. I'd say easily top 3 best African American lead actor roles on film ever. I feel I am biased id say #1 but as maybe I haven't exposed my self to enough make that call. But I will say it's been movie involving a school ever. That much I will not take debates on....freedom writers lol what a joke compared to this movie. I mean the acting in this film is breath taking and feels real. Plus it's powerful 🙌 and makes you feel all different types of emotions while watching. It's impossible to walk away not feeling like you had life lessons. I feel all teenagers entering high school should see the movie fully it could make for a better understanding of the importance of HS and maturity they need.

I'm Native American and Italian. I've been legitimately told I was trash for being me, something I didn't choose. No child chooses their race. Joe said "I don't have to do anything but be black and die! " I latched onto that. I have a choice in my life to embrace who I am as human being. I realized and I can give up or I can fight. The lord will guide me. I don't have to do anything I don't choose to. All I have to do is be brown and die. The rest is me I can lie in gutter. I can work 2 jobs and never see my kids. I can buy cheetos or I can buy apples. The lord blessed me with free choice. So when people tell me "I hafta do something!" They ain't my friend. Cause all I gotta do is be brown and die. Everything else is yours choice 😌.

That line was actually a saying the kids used when people told us what we have to do. We would sass back with "I don't HAVE to do nuthin' but stay black and die" of course meaning we could do whatever wanted. Some kids even said it to Mr. Clark, with very severe consequences ....lol. We all thought it was cool that they used it in the movie.
