The people are saying they want real heritage units. Whoever did the BN logo obviously believes that a pumpkin locomotive with stickers is definitely not a real heritage unit. I totally agree!

To be fair, BNSF's 25th anniversary units were never considered "heritage units" by the Railroad to begin with! However, I'm willing to bet, the BN herald being restored to this SD70MAC probably says what employees and even railfans consider the better era, and that is before BNSF even existed!
Would love to see modern War Bonnets, Blue Bonnets, rare Yellow Bonnets, lesser known Gold Bonnets… and if Lionel can convince BNSF, the mythical Black Bonnet thus making it a reality.

One thing is for sure. Not all Heroes wear a cape.
There was a handful of these mac's running the rails... man this makes me feel old, a decade ago. I really wish that BNSF will keep one in the original paint as true heritage for as long as they run.
Though very much a "TIL" when the BN's logo was designed, it makes sense when you remember that the Hill Roads were always planned to be merged together, even if James himself wasn't able to live to see his railroad empire finally reach fruition.
We have swarms of these out here in Colorado and I could’ve sworn I’ve seen at least one with the original logo

My family lived RIGHT next to the Joint Line south of Colorado Springs just prior to the merger when these engines were the latest thing, we saw them a LOT.
Back in 2014 I saw BNSF 5947 leading with BNSF 9595 that had a BN logo but it had a poor patch job as time went on, and BNSF 9554 with the old BN logo on the front which also received a patch job later on. I saw this in British Columbia Canada of all places.

I hope I'm not alone in wanting to see a modern GE unit in Grinstein Green. I love the BN green and black with the white stripes the most, but that BN Executive scheme is still pretty sharp looking, and I think it would complement the GE's nicely.
Charlie, I look forward to seeing your new videos! Always very interesting and informative. They need to run that BNSF 9653 up through Rockmart and get the proper paint job on the nose. Great work sir.
Outstanding once again! Thanks!

Great moving video, it really stands out and shows your talent in videography.
Funny how this video was showed up on my feed today. I just caught a Grinstein leading which was also on foreign rail. It was without a nose logo.
Ooh, a BN logo on a BNSF? Nice to see that it could be a reference to taking a trip down memory lane. And speaking of BN, I actually saw a few hoppers with the BN logo on it at a Concrete Service Company in my hometown. It's next to the line that is owned by RJ Corman (formerly NS).
Out of curiosity, I just checked photos of #9653 on line and it appears to me that the BN nose logo was never painted over after BNSF was stenciled onto the cab sides as far back as 2007. The BN nose logo looks a little worse for wear today, not as "crisp and fresh" as one would expect of something done more recently.
Awesome capture my friend Like 👍🏻 And Greeting 🙋🏻
Good to see her up front leading her train
Sure the logo on 9653 doesn’t look the best, but it’s one of few SD70MACs that are PTC equipped so y’all be grateful😂

There's still some in H2 paint as well!
9591 is the only remaining MAC with its original logo. 9653s logo was painted on out west back in October while it was in helper service.
BNSF 1922 is still wearing a BN stripe nose green paint job yet and still has a ACI Kar Trak plate too. It was built in 1972 as part of the first order of SD40-2s made by BN. It was built as BN 6339, later renumbered (and repainted, as the ACI plate is now showing through that paint job today) to BN 6916 in the 80s. It remained 6916 through the merger until 2009 when it was renumbered again to 1922. It was up here in WI but has been down in NM/AZ since 2020.
There is a long string of these executive Macs sitting in a yard here in north Minneapolis. Some of them still have the original BN logo on the nose...actually there seems to be three different types of logos on the noses? There's also a very rare modern bnsf high hood unit that looks like a GP40-2 mixed with an SD45? I see tons of oddball and rare locomotives rolling around the twin cities, especially on the Minnesota Commercial, but almost never any heritage units 😢
I have actually caught a unit like this with a legit BN nose. It was last year in Roswell Georgia. I caught it pushing a coal train going south.
Good footage of NS and BNSF!🛤🚂
A heritage unit, if I may say, should have _the_ paint job, _the_ company logo, or at the very least be obviously not just another unit from the big name. I don't mind 9499 and similar paint jobs, but they have never made me think of BN. Never even knew they were supposed to be heritage units, just thought I was looking at a rare paint job like that KCS grey ghost. Norfolk Southern has done decent schemes; I have the IL Terminal in O scale, and would like a few others (Jersey Central Lines would be first, I like brighter colors). Wabash, Central of Georgia, Iowa Interstate, and obviously the Pennsy would be nice additions to anyone's personal roster. Union Pacific's are pretty good as well, if a bit less notable than NS. A lot of them seem to either be excessively basic or busy, but I know that's my particular tastes and not an objective assessment. CSX did a good job on the locomotives behind the cab. Doesn't surprise me that a big corporation would not be rushing to properly remember the smaller companies they swallowed up to get to where they are now, but some of us still want history remembered and respected. I liked the first two rounds of "vandalism," and this is good at least to get people talking. Even graffiti is its own art form, and art should never be held back.
I love these ' vandals'
love the BN classic Logo
back in the 90s, BN bought 350 SD70MACS... that's a lotta (big) macs
Hypothetically, railroads could paint entire classes of engines in heritage schemes and no one would notice other than the rail fans.
Yes, many of the macs don't have PTC installed.
That looks pretty good
Increíble captura 😊

Great video! But, I do want to clarify something I've seen in comments sections concerning BNSF's 25th anniversary ES44ACs. Those locomotives were NEVER referred to as "heritage units" by BNSF, and as for them doing any real heritage units, I'm afraid you'll be waiting a VERY long time as BNSF has stated they have 0 interest in doing them. Its unfortunate, but at the same time, they, along with all the other class one railroads, have got alot bigger problems than what paint they slap on these locomotives right now!
I think the BN livery is based off of NPs north coast limited? The logo was probably originally also designed for NP as well. Probably said NP instead of BN?

No it was not. The NCL scheme was designed by Raymond Loewy in the early 1950s. BN;s Cascade Green was not NP dark green. GN, NP and CB&Q began painting new and refurbished cars in Cascade Green in 1968. NP's prez Menk did become BN's exec, though.

I think the merger name was supposed to be "Burlington Great Northern Pacific?" I think, I remember something like that. Could be wrong though. It was simplified. I do know there was a BN Unit in Big Sky Blue as a test scheme. Saw the picture. Anyway, as a Santa Fe fan, I'm cool with Empire Builder colors of BNSF as I like that as well. I do wish they put some 70Macs in yellow stripe ATSF and some Sky Blue and especially the NP Black and Gold. @@Greatdome99
I don't see any BNSF locomotives up here but all six axle locomotives that Alaska railroad has are SD70MACs
Theirs an original, bn on the Seattle to Spokane line. See it every once and awhile behind a bnsf train.
That was cool.
This BN wasn't painted on with spray paint. The patch has scratched off to expose the BN logo underneath.
the reason the BNSF H1 MACs went to WFRX was because their leases expired and were returned to their lessor and WFRX picked them up second hand
Theres a BN green road switcher (IDK the model) sitting in BNSF yard in downtown oklahoma city. very faded
Engine colors, logos, & noth’n else matters on today’s railways . Recently witnessed yellow Virginia engine headed South on the Griffin to Macon railway . You & me need to hook up for some true stories & sight see’n !
I think BNSF Needs to do Heritage Units for their 30th anniversary. BN cascade, green, ATSF 1940s Bluebonnet, Great Northern, Frisco, Spokane, Portland & Seattle, CB&Q and Northern Pacific. It would definitely get a lot more railfans wanting to visit here in the Pacific Northwest.

You're lucky to get a couple of units with vinyl stickers on them. BNSF puts zero effort into making heritage units, or even *repaints* half the time. It's how the War Pumpkin became a thing and why so many engines are still in schemes from 40+ years ago. They simply do not care about making their paint anything special as long as it keeps the steel from rusting, and even then they dont care as long as the rust isnt *too* bad. Theyre too busy running executive trains for besos and gates to care what people who care about railroad history might want.
I actually saw 9687 leading a train here in Washington State
They Look Better With BN Logos Than BNSF OR Other Random Railroad Logos Gotta Love The Burlington Northern And The Cascade Green And White And Black Ones Too
Where did this occur at? Georgia like the 2 CSX units i assume?
Vandalism 12 Productions!
2:44: Lippincott and Margulies also designed GN's Big Sky Blue motif, CP Rail Action Red, Illinois Central Split Rail logo. 3:59: BN's so-called Executive scheme was applied only to its SD70MACs and two F7s and its business train. Gerald Grinstein's wife selected the colors; New Haven McGinnis and ACL's purple schemes were also selected by exec's wives.

Some, but all, SD70MACs received the BNSF rondel on the nose. Others continued with the original BN logo. You see them occasionally on Virtual Railfan's Fort Madison cam.
