    Interesting about the roots as I’ve heard others say that when you collect them is the best time to prune the roots.

    I only take roots off if they don’t fit in the box I think they need those roots to recover

    Nice the way the shale helps to make a nice root system for the trees. Have you tried shale in one of your mixes to see how a tree would do with it in a pot of your soil mix?

    No but I don’t wash the roots so there’s some left on the trees

    I like 'bonsia'. Essentially what you're doing is rescuing trees that are having a bad time. That's a world away from the conventional cliches of 'bonsai'. Stay with it!
