More Offshore Kayak Fishing in Navarre Florida

Unfortunately I did not get this whole trip on camera because I got distracted by the rain and forgot to hit the record button. Either way, still got some fish on camera after the fact and it turned out to be a great day even with less than favorable conditions.

Snapper season is coming up! How about a video for us newbies on kayak and gear for offshore fishing? Maybe throw in some knowledge about water/weather conditions to be aware of before going out too! It would all be very helpful!

I'd love to make that vid but I'm currently out for work for the next few months and will miss the summer snapper season. I should be home early fall and may get some snapper fishing in this year. If you have Instagram you can always shoot me a message @oa_fishing_ and I can answer any questions you have. For a kayak I've used both paddle and pedal drive. As long as it's stable, maneuverable, and you're comfortable on it it will do just fine. I'd recommend a pedal drive kayak though. If you're trying to fish the reefs, a fish finder is a must so you can add the reef coordinates and navigate to them. For safety gear: life jacket, whistle, pliers, knife, scissors, fish grips, and net(optional). For fishing at least two rods for the reefs. 7' medium heavy or heavy rods with at least 5000 size reels with 30-50 lb braid as main line. For leader 40-60 lb mono or fluoro. For rigs a carolina rig, chicken rig, knocker rig, circle hook jig, or artificial lures will do. For bait I prefer cigar minnows but squid, bonita strips, and mullet will do. For water conditions I use Magic Seaweed and Windfinder, usually anything over 1.5ft for less than 6 seconds and/or over 15mph I don't go. Anything under is manageable. Sometimes you just have to go look at the water and make the call because the weatherman isn't always right. For weather I generally use the weather app and will consistently check the radar. Hopefully some of this info helps. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

  • @oafishing

Thank you for watching the videos! You definitely gotta get out there. Nov is supposed to be good for flounder but now the season closes 15 Oct - 30 Nov and they changed the limit size to minimum of 14 inches. I believe they begin their spawn Oct-Nov and they also start pushing offshore which makes them a little easier to target during this time of year.

I've been enjoying your videos for a while now. Have you been out to the reefs off Henderson State beach for Red Snapper this season? I've been out there twice but have only caught a couple that were under size. I may need to drive out to Navarre before the season closes. Seems like everyone has much better luck. BTW, what size(weight) are those jigheads? Nice video and I look forward to more.

This year I have not hit Henderson mainly because last year I tried it and it seemed like I had to compete with too many boat and only caught undersized snapper. As much as I dislike making the long drive to Navarre it has been well worth it, plenty of action there. The jigs I used were 2 oz. I did have some 3 oz that I will try out next time. I'll try and keep the vids coming as long as the weather cooperates. Thanks for watching the vids!

@@oafishing Thanks for the reply. I'll have to try and pick up a couple of those jigheads. Yes, its tough competing with the boats on the reef off Henderson and I"m paddling, so if there's a boat on reef #1, then its that much farther I have to paddle to find an open spot. I'm sure it'll be worth it though to get up extra early and make the drive to Navarre.

@@aaronm.8429 Oh yeah that sounds like a pain. Navarre is worth it even if I'm only getting 3-4 hours of fishing in. I'll be hitting the Henderson Reefs in the fall when most of the boat traffic is gone. I like to troll that area for mackerel or anything that will bite during that time.
