Regarding that rear shock, it may be old enough such that it is not gas-charged like most shocks are nowadays. If so, the fact that it does not expand on its own does not mean it no longer works. Try compressing and expanding it. The resistance should be different in each direction. That's how shocks used to work before the gas-filled came along.
