MORE NEW DIRT JUMPS LOOK SICK!! LOCKDOWN EP2
Ойын-сауық
The MTB Dirt Jump build continues! Along with riding my backyard on the pitbikes!! I've built more jumps and they look unreal, the dirt is different to work with than Woburn Bike Park sand but I've figured out how to make everything look amazing. Riding this setup will be unreal. Check out the new features I've built and keep suggesting more ideas for what to add please. Next up will be riding and testing the new jumps and adding more, ready for BMX, MTB, RC Cars, Mini Bikes and Pit Bikes. I can't wait.. Stay safe everyone.

I think you should have a straight landing after the tombstone lip and then a 180 berm just before the hedge (it will look sick whatever you do though!)

When working with this dirt try waiting a little after watering the jump and then adding some fresh none waterd dirt to it otherwise it will always be too soft and stick on your shovel or just too dry to compact Great video keep on building!
@kettedh

Paul Lenz just like you wrote👌 for the extra sweet result it's best to do that finishing touches with "screened dirt". Just slap slap slap slap...😀
Me and my friends have the same kind of dirt at out spot. You have to wather your jumps and rollers and you should fill the cracks with new dirt after you watherd them. Then the cracks leave after a while, when you repead that a few times. I hope that helped a bit 😅. Great vid and i think your jumps will become epic :)

dry them slow, water them when drying to fast and there will be minimal shrinking and will last longer
I used to built with some horrible clay like stuff and we had to accualy dip the mud in our reservoir then pack it onto lips. It rode like concrete though when it was summer.

daliks maybe, that might work, you could get a shape of the jump and then do a layer of cement over the top!
@DylanYeomans

@@daliks pack it down hard as you can then let it dry for a day or two. Woburn(where matt rides) is all sand and that runs super fast
I dig with this dirt, when it comes to edges you’ve got to do the slap technique and it just takes patience! Also, as it gets wet it will be very hard to compact as it just sticks to the spade. So i normally put some fresh dirt on top and compact that. Another thing to bear in mind Is that when you are trying to re-surface jumps because they go rock solid, you’ve got to churn it up and hack it a lot then make it very wet and let it soak. Then add fresh stuff. Gunna be sick tho🙌
I’ve been waiting all day for this vid ,such a good series
Taking shape 🙌
When the dirts in the Barrow put a little bit of water in and mix it in the barrow. That's what has worked for me in the past. And if you want a really good finish, change the consistency so it is slightly more watery and use a plastering trowel to apply it for finishing touches.
I’m so glad your banging these videos out quickly there soooo goood
I suggest making several lines, I think that opens up more opportunities for more big and small jumps. Also, if you’d intertwine them it would look unreal. Jumps over lines and stuff. That be sick!
I'm from California and I have to work with dirt like that but some dirt near LA is like sand but in Marin where I'm at its just like that so the key is to soak the dirt the get it really wet and when you pack the dirt you want to slide the shovel at the same time so the dirt doesn't stick Also, build a wooden rolling like the flight deck on Seth's Bike Hacks but more smooth

With dirt, to clean up the look. You'll need to put just a little bit of dirt in your shovel and apply it to the lip by throwing it almost overhand style with the shovel little by little. Berrecloth would be good to hit up about it. He taught me and also mixing in ready mix cement with the dirt to make a solid lip you'll never need to work on
I have a mtb/bmx trail in my garden and i agree its very difficult because it takes ages so what i do is i go round looking for logs and then cover it up because it saves time and materials. Also when trying to get more dirt for more features try to build the track into the ground such as berms are deep in the ground which will also help with your slight uphill problem. Like this so it gets seen by matt!
This is definitely going to be my favourite series
If only we all had a backyard that big looks like like the absolute dream🔥🔥🤙🤙
Cheers Matt, For keepin it safe and fun .Tonnes of enjoyment to be had on bikes alone . Thanks.
A massive help when building in pure dirt, is stacking turf to build a wall on the sides of the lip or landing. That technique is just brilliant!

Add way less water to the dirt than you are use to. What works for me is holding my fingers over a 5L water bottle and shaking the bottle. Use between 1L&2L of water at a time. Hopefully it helps!

you should build a small wooden start ramp for the jump line!
Lino and carpet will help you out with the cracking and crumbling, build, pack, cover. the outer layer is drying and contracting much quicker than the inside, covering them evens it up a little
Just keep building more and more pumpbumps! Also a mini cement mixer with topsoil , sand , water and a bit of calcium flakes will have you grinning ear to ear. Perfect top coat

I’ve been putting off building trails on my property for a couple years now but this series and the free time I have has inspired me to start building!
Beautiful!
stop posting, I will never do my homework
I already worked with that kind of dirt. It's super hard to dig with. But theres actually a way it works out quite well even though it sounds a bit weird. Take the dirt, water it and form kind of meatballs out of it with your hands. Then you smash these meatballs on the side and finish it with the spade. Works perfect😅👌🏻
Look from my experience digging with types of dirt if you can combine your mud and a more sandy dirt in a mixture you can pull off the hard packed surface of clay and the sharp edges of sand. Also the less-watered you can make the mud the less cracks you'll find as less moisture is drawn out. If thats hard to manage just using a broom and dry dirt helps the cracks. Hope this helps and is relevant all the way from down under.
So stoked to watch this series
backyard content is the dream
cutting out those squares of grass is too satisfying
The best way to get the dirt to hold together is to wet it first in the pile, the dirt needs the moisture in it before you start, not after you make the feature. Just wet it enough so that when you grab a handful and squeeze it, it stays in a ball and doesn't crumble apart. Best way to wet the dirt is spray it with a water hose fine spray than turn pile over with shovel and repeat until its the consistency you want. Good luck looks great.
I’m looking forward to seeing more jumps built! A wonderful garden it will be. Great video fellas!
Love this. Best series out!
Something to wait for whilst on lockdown, keep them coming!😇
Love your vids matt u r such an inspiration you actually got me into my mountan bike again
If you want to get rid of the cracks then just keep watering the cracks and then use the spade to kinda get it shinny and then keep doing that till all the cracks go. Keep up the great building Matt!
Matt remember this soil will become loose and un ridable in the smallest of rain, also where you dig down after each landing you have not allowed any drainage. This soil is great all the time you have blue sky and as compact as it feels it is not! for sure you need a compactor plate. looks epic I just want to give you the heads up! this soil is great for growing vegetables and grass lawns.
I have the exact same dirt as you’re jumps in my trails, I find that using small amounts of water and consistently watering the jumps make them not crack when they eventually dry out and it helps with making the edges of the jump really clean
Mix the mud up with plenty of water in the wheelbarrow, then use our hands for the corners. Also if you get a sprinkler head for your watering can will make it much easier to evenly water them and not soak them too much
Absolutely amazing 😻
can't wait to see more progress. For the corners to get them solid and nicely shaped if you get the soil very wet then shape it with your hands so you don't have to worry about it sticking to your shovel it is very affective.
Epic, how you can Form those jumps in perfect shapes... 🤤
When packing, use a tarp over the dirt and then pack. Prevents sticking
love the channel man! and this series is gonna be gooooood✊🏻 not planning on stopping the daily tune in on your channel, keep it up bro!!🤙🏻
This is the dream backyard 😱 Love the series man 🔥
You could build a wooden wallride to change the direction...i think thats creative, too.😉
I heard one way of helping with the cracks is by watering it lightly with a watering can with a wide nosel thingy, like a shower head, and immediately after stand on top of the ramp and brush a hard bristle broom over the riding surface. I've never done this before, because I have very dusty and dry dirt where I am, but I think it may be useful for the dirt your using.
I live in Moab Utah,. We have a lot of sand. I usually get the bulk of the jump done and go back, wet the jump and hand place the dirt on all the edges and corners. Slap it down and repeat until you are happy cheers mate!
So looking forward to the rest of the line! wish I had the space to have a little garden dirt jump line
If it ends up being to dry, try mixing it with some dirt that is already wet. But go easy with the water as the clay will bind really quick. It just becomes a nightmare I found a nap-sack sprayer was helpful. Then shape away with your water after. Then you will have a full BA-degree in pottery.
Go right after the tombstone and then make a 180 berm back down the hedgerow
Matt this project is awesome! I am buzzing for your build & ride videos!
Episode 2 🤟 The dream = backyard trails!
So so excited for these episodes! Keep it up!
So hyped for this series👍
I build a pump track in the back of my field, I found the best soil to use is called subsoil, it moulds better. What you're using is topsoil, what you might get that the top corners of the jumps might be weaker
i watched episode 1 just before this one came out and i was sad that there was no more of thes builds i could binge watch and then this came out :)
Mix the dirt with water in a bucket and use it to really perfect the corners and shape the jump. It’s the best shaping mud/dirt to use. Apply it with your hands.
To help prevent the dirt from crumbling I suggest you make a wider base. It takes a long time to make the sides that steep. If you want to you can come back later after the dirt has hardened to shape down the sides so you can reuse that dirt.
For the cracks in the fresh rollers give them a light bit of water and broom in fresh dirt no clumps will fill it perfectly smooth continue it a few times over the weeks and it will end up perfectly smooth
Loving this series man, keep having fun 🤘🏻
best series on youtube, thank you matt jones!!!
Matt!! Definitely craving that video everyday from you while the whole entire world is on lockdown! Cheers mate!
We have dirt like that here with my mates actually all of our jumps are made with that kind of dirt. We get it really wet almost like mud wher it sticks to the spade. After packing the dirt you sprinkle on dry dirt the same dirt from the pile to prevent stickage, also helps with the cracking when it dries
Double left berm after! Inside one is 180 and outside one is 90 degrees! Then focus on one line for a bit before starting to integrate the other.
Yess i love these series!!
Your vids are getting me through the lock down! I'm going to get my first good mountain bike today, thanks matt!
