LOL at the Oklahoma alert. The “pew-wup, pew-wup, pew-wup, pew-wup, pew!” signal was bad enough. .But, the difficulty with hanging up the phone was eerie. I bet that if I was watching the Weather Channel because a “severe tornado warning” was for my area, I would’ve screamed bloody murder when they encountered those difficulties with them hanging up.

It looked like the tornado had killed everyone because nobody hung up the phone. (of course, in real life they were all fine. It was a small tornado that hit in a rural area west of the Yukon Office Of Emergency Management building. They just forgot to hang up.)

The alert was for the EF5 monster that was the 1999 Bridge Creek-Moore tornado from May 3, 1999. It was the first time a tornado emergency was issued. That tornado is still considered one of the largest and most powerful tornados to date. The alert is incredibly scary, and the last part definitely freaked me out. I think the officer hung up but forgot to dial out, likely to scramble to safety.

It's a sunny afternoon in the middle of winter and 2:39 scared the hell out of me.
I remember back then when they showed an alert just for severe thunderstorms(even if they passed by or weren't that bad), it still scares and turns me into a crying mess. And remembering one that showed on tv, I turn that off, pulling up the radio right beside my head as I slept, and the same thing happened...it was awful.

This reminds me of the “fire safety trailer” they used to bring to school. It was a camper that was rigged up to simulate both a severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado warning. They had the fake TV broadcast that abruptly cut off, the lights flickering, the window shutters moving, the whole nine yards. Needless to say it scarred me for life.

Those are the memories I loved when I was young
The katv ones (lunchable and 1997 tornado outbreak ones) in Arkansas scared the hell out of me when I was little when I knew severe weather was coming. But it also got REALLY old when it was about a storm or flash flood 3 or more hours away from us. Smartphones and faster scrolling text definitely help. That day in 1997 was absolutely frightening for me. Thanks for including our 6 tone annoying one on here! I miss it in a nostalgic way.

@@harveywallbanger3123 They probably got bought out, cause I recently saw a commercial with the name America’s Best. It had an owl.
Those radars....When I was child back then, I said to myself, "I cannot wait until they invent dual-pol doppler radar!" I also remember as a child the tv stations were off the air by 1 a.m. We had no weather radio coverage. We had to rely on radio stations (miles aways) to give us the alert. But, that required listening constantly and hoping the on-call radio station person would get to the station soon. It's much better now! Thank God for technology. KCCI-TV8 Des Moines (CBS) had "creepy" warning sound back in the 1980s and early 1990s. If you do another clip, find one from that station.
Fun story about that last AlertReady in Toronto. I was in the Eaton Centre (Just opposite the building that appears in the background) when this happened and because it was a brand new system, nobody knew what was going on in the mall. My Uber driver later on knew all about weather radios and told me what it was :D

Y'know I have a really vivid memory of playing hide and seek with my brother. I was hiding in a dresser cupboard and the EAS system went off on the TV. Scared me so much it made me leave my hiding spot crying. I probably lost that hide and seek game but man that shit's scary. There was this one time when there was like, hail the size of golf balls or something and the EAS went off. My parents had the TV set to the weather channel after that.

Canada's alert ready tone is at times loud enough to wake the dead. I remember crashing out in front of the TV when a monthly test would come on. Needless to say I was no longer asleep.
5:16 is the time when the random tone plays
That America's Best commercial at 1:35 was scary on it's own, it really didn't need an EAS warning to help it along with that. The eye glasses mermaids, the general artwork, the animation, and that instrument with all of the flutter in it just seems very unsettling. I always got a bit of a chill whenever that commercial came on TV.
Why am I addicted to these
3:36 would make me sing ngl
Back in the 70s and 80s KCCI 8 in Des Moines Iowa had the scariest music when severe weather hit.
Some of the things that make these scary: - The old 80s style computer text. It's worse when you get an almost full screen solid background but you can still see a bit of the show playing at the edges (though CRTs of the time usually cropped this out) - Juxtaposition between a happy scene and the ominous warning in overlaid text and replaced audio - An unpleasant computer voice, or a human voice that sounds like it's being transmitted through a static radio. It gives the impression that things have already started falling apart. - The grating EAS data burst tones, and the old style EBS tone that brings back memories of the Cold War in many people.
The AES sound always scares me and catches me off guard. When I was a kid they always showed a picture of a tornado; like the first clip and that made me even more scared and freaked out

America's Best still is around.
Growing up in Florida we always had alerts going like these for hurricane season and for summer storms. Even as an adult EAS still scare the hell outta me. Its always the abrupt interruption and crusty alert tone that gets me.
im just glad that the eas on tv aint used much for severe thunderstorm warnings, anymore mainly because those who see em on tv are normally already inside... now the radio still does it.
I witnessed the EAS once (or a few times, I think I've seen it a few times but I'm not sure) when I was small, one of the ones with the fucking terrifying SAME header (like the one at 2:40 but with the creepier automated voice) because New Hampshire was being lashed by pretty bad thunderstorms, of the kind where my mom told me to stay away from windows. And one that subsequently caused a pretty bad long lasting black out in our small town of Derry. It's not even the tone meant to alert you that terrifies me, it's the goddamn header. Hearing it as a child made me so much more afraid of it now.
@Corgipon
Жыл бұрын
Believe me, the SAME headers scared the crap out of me as a kid too. They sound aggressive AF even though they’re meant to send important codes to transmitters rather than grab people’s attention (they did a freakin good job at the latter though). We used to have U-Verse and every time an EAS came on the headers and tone sounded like they were lagging like some sort of lagging call recording. It would always give me the shivers because of how distorted they sounded.
1:32 - I think the commercial is much scarier than the warning. Creepy ukaleli(sp?) music, even creepier eyeglass mermaids, animation that has a bit of an off/uneasy look to it. Brrrrr.

Seeing these at 2am as a kid💀
Something about the one at 2:35 feels different. It's hard to explain. It almost feels unnatural. It's almost as if it was made by an intelligent species, attempting to reproduce an actual EAS alert. The tones are not at the correct frequency, making it appear the connection is unstable, and the video is constantly distorting. Even the voice sounds off, like it was produced artificially. It clearly does a very good job at grabbing your attention, even if the tone frequency is incorrect. Edit: I'm not saying it's fake or made by aliens or anything, just think it's interesting.
