    @@margaretwood152 Spyrers first appeared in Necromunda back in 1996 (nine years before Infinity came into existence as a game system in 2005), and back then the lore already stated that Spire Hunters used non-standard technology in the Spyrer hunting rigs that was canonically of (extremely illegal in the Imperium) Xenos origin and didn't look like other Imperial technology, tending toward a sleeker and more high tech appearance. In the early 2000s it was suggested that the Tau might be building the Spyrer suits and smuggling them into the Imperium for their own reasons, but that does not seem to be the case anymore because the visual lexicon of Tau technology is better established today than it was in 2001, and the Spyrer suits have a different aesthetic and technological style to that of the Tau, so maybe it is tech from one of the Tau client species or another Xenos source. Either way, the sleeker, more integrated and high tech look of Spyrer technology has been part of the character of the faction since they were first introduced. Any visual similarity to Infinity designs is most likely simply due to both sets of models being closer to more widely recognisable tropes of futuristic high technology than the Imperium's more eclectic technology base usually is.

    From what I understand of the Van Saar, their gear and style is directly from the Dark Age of Technology (Humanity's high tech golden age before the Age of Strife) so it makes sense that they look very different from the Imperium's grim gothic stuff.

    I have always found Spyrers to be an intriguing faction in Necromunda - bored and psychotic, entitled Spire nobles who basically channel the Yautja (which I suppose makes their battles with Malstrain Genestealers Necromunda style Alien versus Predator?) and go on big game hunts to the Underhive where various Gangers (and even the odd unfortunate Enforcer) are the game. The most dangerous game, only using futuristic, high tech hunting suits.

    @@jiado6893 It was definitely bored, psychotic Spire Nobles hunting Gangers for sport in some dissolute version of a noble hunting tradition back in the original lore, since they saw the Underhivers as essentially subhuman and good for little else. That lore seems to have been tweaked a bit now, and Spyrers are all off shoots in one way or another of House Helmawr, and their hunts are in part used to demonstrate their personal combat prowess and thus, supposedly, their fitness to wield power one day (that doesn't make sense, but this is a decadent Imperial Noble House we are talking about, so weirdness is mandatory). That is why hunting the more dangerous Malstrain Genestealers offers more prestige and status to a Spyrer than hunting human(ish) Gangers. With all that said, I am sure there is also still plenty of room for good old fashioned bored, unhinged noble weirdoes who use high tech combat suits to hunt Gangers just for the hell of it - this is still the Grimdark Imperium after all.

    Those reimagined Spyrer models are very tasty indeed. Add in the heavier Orrus suits from Saturday's preview and you have a decent range of armour and weapon load out styles to choose from. Since Spyrers were always the most elite of gangs in Necromunda, it seems likely their model count per gang will remain low in their new incarnation, which makes the relatively small number of poses much less of an issue.

    Getting two copies of each body - but with a ton of arm, head and upgrade options - is a Necromunda staple. To the best of my knowledge every single Necromunda box consists of two copies of the same sprue. But unlike, say, AoS kits that use the same trick (looking at you, most of Stormcast) you’re not at any risk of getting a gang of clones, because the kits are built to be extremely versatile. As a general rule, every body in a given gang can use every head and every set of arms in that same gang, and the game is so encouraging of kitbashing that you are likely to end up sprinkling in all sorts of weirdness anyway.

    @keithmoore7629 There's strong evidence besides a couple lines in an old codex. They kept the old names for the suits, which are all words in the Tau language that correspond to each suit's function: Orrus = Or'es - Powerful Jakara = J'karaa - Mirror Malcadon = Mal'caor - Spider Yeld = Y'eldi - Winged The Matriarch and Patriarch look a lot more like standard Imperial tech though, so they might be hybrids.

    Going back to the 90s game, a Spyrer Hunters gang would usually be only 4 or 5 members - they were expensive. (And elite). The gangs themselves are 2 duplicate sprues, so there would be multiples of the same pose, but give how customisable the game is, it was easier to hide that. But my guess is the Spyrers will have 2 light sprues, and 2 heavy sprues. It'll be interesting to see if they add any options for the heavy pattern armour other than Orrus now.

When I first saw a space marine it blew by tiny little mind and I thought it was the coolest shit I ever saw. It didn't compare to any sci fi I had seen up to that point. That still has a little bit of a hold on me now. I love some of the more interesting models in the other ranges but nothing allows you to be as creative as the space marines for making it your own. 40k and especially space marines and their variants, Orks ect. really just allow people to get creative. I would say that is much harder to do with AOS and the other settings (even though necromunda should be ripe for it). It can be done but it requires more skill and effort to be truly creative. I think that's the draw to 40k. It encourages creativity naturally.

  • @gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954

    @gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954

    2 ай бұрын

    @@gregsmw I think the whole point is that the style of combat suit the Spyers use is not Imperial standard, and indeed is probably not constructed by the Ad Mech at all, still less certified as Ommissiah sanctified technology. It has often been suggested in the lore that Spyrer suits are constructed at least in part from smuggled xeno-tech and possibly some old, Pre-Imperial Dark Age technology. That is why it doesn't have the aesthetics of the rest of the technology of the Imperium - this stuff is 100% illegal tech-heresy, and if the Ad Mech or the Ordo Xenos found out about it things would get awkward fast for House Helmawr and most likely all the Noble Houses on Necromunda. The technology style is deliberately different and is not supposed to fit in with the technology around it so that it is clear to the player that this tech is contraband. Normally the Noble Houses don't care, because no authority on Necromunda has the power to call them on its use, but if the truth got out into the broader Imperium things might get sticky, which is likely why the Spyrers don't tend to leave many living witnesses to their illicit hunts and also explains why the Spire Hunters have closer connections to Van Saar gangs than most, because House Van Saar is also on very shaky ground from a tech-heresy point of view given its use of non-standard tech. Back in the early 2000s it was hinted that the Spyrer suits might be built by the Tau and then smuggled into the Imperium, but that is no longer clearly the case. The style of technology employed in the suits seems distinct from Tau tech as well, so perhaps it comes from a Tau client species or some other, unknown Xenos origin. It is just one more of those little mysteries that litter the 40K lore.
