My head-canon is that everyone in the John Wick universe is so accustomed to it that they hear the shots, but pretend not to notice and hope the firefight will hurry up and move on.

I remember watching a documentary talking about colt and Smith&Wesson; how they came to be and at one point in the documentary where Sam Walker and his Men are dealing with the Mexican army and the Mexican army are armed with 1860 Henry rifles This is taking place in 1847 Literal salt in the eyes for me every time a whoopsie like that happens

If only they remade the Sons of Katy Elder set in current times, the hero could use one of those 12 shot 22lr SAA's that Uberti makes. That would make the shot count and no recoil totally realistic. :)

I think the most over the top gun scene I remember was in Open Range where Robert Duvall's character blasts the bad guy through a wall, with a coach gun and throws him several feet against a building. I still like the gun fight scenes and the movie despite Kevin Costner fanning his single action at the man threatening his love interest.

My favorite gun scene in movies is in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Wherein Tuco kitbashes several revolvers into one. The owner takes out "the best ones" he has, as Tuco is disgusted by the cheaper ones.

If those John Wayne scenes bothered you don't watch Comancheros. It takes place in the Republic of Texas in 1839 but everyone is armed with colt 1873s and Winchesters. Good plot and would have been a lot better if it had percussion and flint guns hell i would have been fine if they used Patersons even tho the Texas Rangers didn't use them until 1844.

The greatest gun ever was in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Defense attorney Atticus Finch shoots a rabid dog that's terrorizing the small, southern town. His children are nearly awestruck at his marksmanship, but it's all because he had the greatest US battle rifle ever. The 1st smokeless powder weapon adopted by the US military. The first small caliber weapon adopted by the US military. The first repeating rifle adopted for general issue. The 30-40 Krag/Jorgensen.

How about the GAU-2/ B in Predator? It isn't the weight of the gun or the recoil. ALL of the support equipment to make it work and the ammunition would be too much for anyone to carry.

My 1873 colt saa has patent dates of Sept 19 1871, July 9-72 and Jan 19-75. I know that like the 1858 Remington these models were around but not made available for distribution until 73.. I think?? Maybe you could reiterate.. I'm curious about these patent dates and actual distribution dates.

Dad and I have been laughing about the Katie Elder end for 30 years. LOL! If you really want to nitpick over the Shootist 1871 thing, those 4 3/4 barrels probably would not be around until like the early 1880s (maybe late 70s) to my understanding and even the 7.5 inch wasn’t really on the civilian market until that time. In Rooster Cogburn (sequel to True Grit), he refers to his Single Action 4 3/4 as a “Colt Navy Six”

I can’t watch movies that are just wrong, maybe the odd bit of exaggeration but like the one with John Wick nah. Unless they say it’s future tech or something but even then. Also the John Wick stuff is OTT but Quentins films? Aren’t they the most over the top with a cherry on top films?

Your comments around the 4 minute mark confused me so I thought I would leave my own. Burning blackpowder will certainly follow a powder trail like the smokeless. The issues is speed. At ambient pressure (like you would find in a powder trail) black powder burns much faster than smokeless. So you don't get those slow dramatic powder burns, you get very fast moving powder burns that Our Hero would have a difficult time outrunning. I think the Mythbusters might have even done an episode on that. I know they did one for burning jet fuel. If you want to know why that is, it is because smokeless powder's burn rate is a function of pressure and black powder's burn rate largely is not. So at normal air pressure smokeless burns slower than black powder, but when contained in a cartridge it can burn faster than black powder. This is also why you can leave empty space in a smokeless cartridge, but black powder requires the bullet to be seated on the powder (or a filler material to be placed in the empty volume). The smokeless essentially has to pressurize the cartridge before its burn rate increases and allows for higher pressures to develop. Black powder just goes no matter what.

  • @GunsOfTheWest
