More From Marlene Dumas: 'We Were All In Love With The Cyclops' Palette and Color Study

In this video we will again see how Marlene Dumas deploys 'traditional' painting techniques in the service of her own unique conceptual vision. We will look in detail at her large painting 'We Were All In Love With The Cyclops' (1997) and I investigate her color mixing and palette by creating a small color study.
Along the way we will see how Dumas is influenced by Monet's mixing, Cezanne's use of grays, and the compositional techniques of the Cubists.
As always I use the two-color mixing technique to get the colors Dumas uses. I also show you how to combine acrylic and oil paints in creating color studies, which can speed up the process without losing the learning value of really getting to know your colors.
Key mixes from '...Cyclops' include:
Mix 1: lemon yellow and ultramarine blue,
Mix 2: viridian green and rose madder,
Mix 3: emerald green and rose madder
Mix 4: cadmium red and viridian green
The oil paint palette that I use is:
- cadmium orange
- cadmium red
- rose madder
- ultramarine blue
- phthalo blue
- viridian green
- emerald green
- lemon yellow
The corresponding acrylic palette is:
- cadmium orange
- cadmium red
- process magenta
- ultramarine blue
- phthalo blue
- phthalo green
- emerald green
- process yellow
The thinning agent I use in the place of turps or white spirit is 'Zest-it'.
