More for Less: Dehydrating Raspberries and Mangos on a Budget

Your girl cannot pass up a sale, ever. Mangos and raspberries were on sale this week at my local grocery store, and so I stocked up to make treats for the next few weeks, and raspberry powder for the next few months. I'll show you how you can do it, too!

    Fruit powder can also be used to make fruit flavored cakes and pancakes. If you're making a cake, I recommend adding fresh fruit juice as well to kick up the flavor

    I have an awesome sweet none stringy hybrid imported mango tree and every year I get about 100 quart jars of dehydrated mangos (most go in large vacuum sealed containers). I give them away as gifts and every year friends wait for them. I use the pulp for mango concentrate that I freeze to make mango juice all year. They are Candy.

    Just last night I told a couple of friends I was going to the store to get some nice ripe fruit to dehydrate and make powder with for my homemade yogurt! I just started making yogurt again recently with a recipe that we both love more than anything else we have ever eaten, and adding different fruit flavors will be a wonderful flavor change. I used to make creamed honey, and I intend to that that again, too, as one of those friends has beehives! I made fruit powder to put in my creamed honey and gave away a lot as gifts. What;s better than having your own pure fruit powders to flavor other things and provide extra healthful benefits as well! I am going to open a can of my Thrive Life blueberries to start because they are just there waiting for something to happen to them other than the blueberry syrup I made a few days ago. I also have Thrive Life strawberries. Half the job is already done so I am way ahead of this game starting today! Darci thanks for the refresher on prepping the fruit. I live in Florida where those mangoes are hitting the supermarkets in large amounts and looking sooo tasty. I think its my new favorite fruit. I also drink mango nectar which is decadently delish. Have you powdered mango? Best wishes on your upcoming surgery! I hope it is totally uneventful and you feel much better soon!

    We don't bother powdering the mango because it all gets eaten so quickly - but as long as it is dried very well, it will powder fine. Just have to manage storage with moisture absorbers as it can get clumpy.

    It would! Freeze dried powders dissolve a lot better than dehydrated ones, but given some time to settle in the hot water, the dehydrated will integrate pretty quickly.

    not everyone can handle the seeds, and too many can create a bitter after taste or make the powder gritty when you need it smooth. But you're welcome to give it a try to see if it doesn't bother you.

    Darcy, when/why do you choose to use a freeze dryer over the dehydrator?

  • @ThePurposefulPantry

    @ThePurposefulPantry

    2 ай бұрын

    I use the freeze dryer for proteins of any kind (meat, cheese - future eggs...haven't done them, yet), full meals, and I'm still experimenting with other things trying to see if I prefer it dehydrated or freeze dried. We have a small list going of our preferences - and there have been a few things we prefer dehydrated (mushrooms, tomato chips) over freeze-dried. I prefer raspberries freeze dried in both snack and powder form. So - its really trial and error for those kinds of things.
