Sportswise we (Sweden) have rivalries with all our neighbors in different sports. Football- Denmark. Met each other over a 100 times. Ice hockey - Finland Other Winter sports - Norway Except from that we get along very well and we are like brothers even though of course there are jokes about one another.

If you want a good rivalry then basically do an entire video about the entire Middle East 😂😂😂😂

Great video! What about the rivalries between Bulgarian and Byzantine empires during the Middle Ages? After all, except for some short periods of peace, these two states are almost constantly in a state of war or, at least, a diplomatic turbulence. Generally speaking the time period in question consist of 675 years of European history and marks almost the entirety of the Balkan Middle Ages.

As a Swede I know alot about the dano swedish wars. BUT I have never seen the swedish rule over finland as a rivalry, that is incorrect. I would argue! that Finland WAS sweden. Not just a part of sweden . A real rivalry is that between Sweden and Russia. otherwise. I really like your videos. :)

It's Italy, everything south of the Alps is Italy, since roman times the Alps were the natural border dividing Italia from the rest of the world. Just because some german speaking farmers decided to settle there during the late middle ages isn't going to change that.

Aww, you didn't mention Norway-Sweden when talking about Denmark-Sweden. It's not *really* a separate conflict as the cause is that Norway was in a personal union with Denmark during many of their wars vs Sweden, and given the location a lot of the fighting of course ended up on our borders. Also, the Danish-Swedish conflict dates back to at least the viking age and the total number of wars arguably exceeds the number of wars between France and England making it the most wars between two counries ever. It kind of depends on how you count it though as some of the wars could be considered either separate wars or all part of the same war with short interruptions, among other things.

@@skelet8337 cool story bro. Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia are pretty much BFFs for the longest of time. The only conflicts that involve them were generated by strong empires around (Ottomans, Russians and Austro-Hungary). These countries not only that they are in the same boat, having the same goals and struggles but they also formed close ties to each other through trade, common projects and cooperation.

There has never been any major rivalry between Finns and Swedes. We coexisted peacefully from the middle ages until the 1800s, and since then we have held a close relationship. A large rivalry worth mentioning is Sweden and Russia. They were the two largest powers in the north/east region of Europe and constantly squabbled for power and land between the 1500s and 1800s

Perhaps not a major rivalry, but calling it a peaceful coexistence is sweeping under the rug the fact that Sweden conquered Finland, colonised parts of it, saw itself a superior language and culture, did not consider Finns equals to Swedes (when racial theory was popular, Sweden was pushing the narrative that Finns are an inferior race and this is still fairly recent history). Finnish people had no say in the matters of Finland, were drafted as soldiers, and made to supply even Sweden with grain (even during a famine that wiped out an estimated one third of the population). Finland was a subject to Sweden, not an ally or friend.

True, there is no military rivalry between the nations, but there most certainly is one when it comes to sports and general country rankings, were it Finland and Sweden or England and Wales. And there are plenty of Welsh people who are pissed off at England, the Westminster in particular, for screwing over Wales (at least, that is what I have witnessed living in England).

hungarian - romanian conflict is also fueled by how different the languages are. most romanian people will learn english or another romance language as a second language, and only some small communities in transylvania are proficient in both. i think the same goes for hungarians, personally ive never met a hungarian person that spoke romanian flawlessly

Serbian and Albanian rivalry is quite a modern thing, and not only didn't it exist say 100+ years ago, they were actually allies and fought together against ottoman forces and expansion in battle such as that of the Kosovo battle of 1389. Although there were both Serbian and Albanian traitors that joined the ottomans for whatever reasons, the absolute majority seen one another as true allies that lived, dressed etc etc basically the same way.. The Albanian Kastrioti family which are still looked upon as national hero's today are a perfect example of this truth!

as an austrian from the border to italy im surprised about mention of austrian italian rivalry, except border and südtirol we dont really have much to do with each other imo, there is more influence from every other neighbouring country to austria, our south german culture and italian culture is pretty much the biggest culture difference you can get in europe... we do have good food here i think maybe thats an italian influence :)

I appreciate the effort you have taken, these videos are pretty much accurate and also quality ones 🙂.However, (for some positive critics) in my opinion you should have put a modern day etno-racial-linguistical map in one of the corners, therefore it would have been more understandable and accurate in most of the cases (e.g. Hungary-Romania, Austria-Italy, Albania-Serbia, etc.).

@@_utahraptor incorrect, we didn't "claim" their territory, we were in a personal union. Why do you think there were barely any Hungarians across the Drava river? They were never "OpPrEsSeD", and to this day, from all the the South Slavs, Croats are the friendliest.

2:20 please don’t imply there was a union between Finland and Sweden. “Union” implies mutual status. This was not the case. Sweden conquered Finland, colonised parts of it, and viewed itself very much superior to Finland. The Finnish people had no say in their own matters, the Finnish language had no official status, and the culture was looked down upon. Finland was nothing but a buffer zone that supplied Sweden with grain and soldiers. There was no mutual union and Swedes considered Finns an inferior race well into 1900s.

Maybe in Hungary it's that way.. But here in Romania we live in peace with the hungarians.. Actually all my friends are hungarians. With that oportunity I had also the ocasion to learn the language:)

To be honest the issue is moot. There's no chance that Transylvania will ever break up from Romania as the majority population is Romanian. Also it would be illegal under the Romanian constitution which dictates that Romania is indivisible. Internationally nobody would support an independent Transylvania (maybe except for Hungary) as this could launch other separatist movements like Catalonia and nobody wants that. Even if push comes to shove and Hungary was willing to fight Romania for it and the international community didn't step in with twice the population and twice the military spending Romania would beat Hungary long term. So you might as well learn to put that behind you and try to get along.

You should try some Central Europe like Slovakia vs Hungary or Czechia vs Germany (it's not really a rivalry between those two but there were some interesting conflincts through history).

Why did you bring up Sweden vs Finland but not Sweden vs Norway or Denmark. As a swede myself i can confirm that Sweden and Norway/Sweden and Denmark have a far bigger rivalry than Sweden vs Finland. Still great video btw!

@@david23854 there was this tiny war between Nor/Swe in the early 1800s. But done and over with in 2 weeks. 1 casualty if I recall correctly. Could have been a war in 1905 also. Swedish troops gathered.

the sweden-finland rivalry comes from the fact that finns were a people speaking a similar dialect in the north without a ruler or laws and then suddenly were swooped in to sweden. the swedes in finland were a small, small minority but they held all the power and they thought of themselves as better. the swedes WERE our rivals because they were rich and the finns were poor. there wasn't a country called finland before sweden came here, there was starting to become a country when we were an autonomous region of the soviet union. that's why swedes are rivals to us finns. we are not swedish, we do not want to be russian so let us be finns. in finnish it goes "ruotsalaisia emme ole, venäläisiksi emme tule, olkaamme siis suomalaisia". you may not know about our shared history but we do and our rivalry is why we are proud to be finnish.

You could make an entire video on the conflicts between England and Ireland.

Yes, please, do it the Balkans seperetly, good luck while making that video 😉

There's no significant rivalry between Serbia and Albania, it's more about Serbians vs Albanians fighting over Kosovo, and that conflict is really something new, the thing from twenty century. In actuality, Serbia and Albania were never in war. Historically speaking, the biggest rival of Serbia by far is Bulgaria. Serbia and Bulgaria only in 20 century fight 3 big wars against each other, and rivalry is originating from the Middle Ages. The other two biggest rivals of Serbia, historically, are Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Historically, the only significant rival of Serbia left is Hungary. The rivalry between Serbians and Albanians, and Serbians and Croats, is the thing from twenty century, mostly WWII and later, but it's the most recent, so it's giving the impression of importance.

well i think a rivalry between Serbia and Albania exists and not only because of Kosovo. It dates back to the 15th century, Albanians have been driven away from there lands and been attacked several times since then. The pain still sits deep in the albanian population.

I dont really agree with Sweden and Finland. Never been any conflict at all between those two nations. Swedes and Finns cooperate in so many things, even a strong military deal above the Gulf of Bothnia and the Baltic sea. There is an old saying in Sweden: "Finlands sak är vår!" It could be translated to something like: "Finland's situation is ours"

All conflicts with Russia has been about Finnish territory. Finns has fought together against russian empire since 1321 when the first peace treaty was signed which dividend Finland. Only one military operaation between Finland and Sweden took place 1918 when swedish troops landed in Åland. German and Finnish whites together with Mannerheim throwed them out. Nowdays Finland ans Sweden are allied military since they dont belong to Nato.

There’s a saying in Finland, too: Ruotsi taistelee viimeiseen suomalaiseen. Sweden will fight to the last Finn. Historically, Finland was Sweden’s buffer zone against Russia, and a supply of soldiers and and grain for the crown. Finland and Sweden were not in a union, Finland was Sweden’s subject and not an equal partner. It is not cooperation when the other party has no say in the matter.

@@Silveirias learn the fact. Finns were seen as swedes back then. And actually, most of the swedish army was todays swedes, finns etc and most off all: mercenaries from Europe - germans, even scotts fought in the swedish army. There were too few people in todays Finland back then to even uphold an own force. Sweden had to take from all its territories and then go with mercenaries. Finns had to deal with same stake as every citizen of Sweden. Finland was no buffert zone, you WERE Sweden, hence why Stockholm was a good place for being the capital because cause when Finland was part of Sweden Stockholm was in the centre of the kingdom. Back then the name of Finland was Österland, just like Norrland is the northern region today, and your capital Helsinki - Helsingfors in swedish - name hails from Hälsingland in Sweden, because it was part of the Helsinge regions back then. And Sweden had Svea Borg (svearnas borg) in todays Finland, the cunterpart of Göte Borg (götarnas borg) that is Gothenborg today. Finns were seen as our own people.

@@viktor9988 I'm guessing you're Swedish, based on the bias you have. Perhaps you should look into the history from Finland's perspective one of these days, too. The only Finns considered Swedish were the Swedish speaking elite. The Finnish speaking peasants, the majority of Finns, were not seen as equals. The Finnish language had no status, the Finnish culture was looked down upon. Finland was considered a conquered area, not "proper" Sweden. If Sweden had not lost Finland to Russia, Finland may have never become independent. Russia's rule was equally unjustified, but under Russia, Finland became autonomous and for the first time had a say in its own internal matters. The autonomous Finland had its own senate, currency, and military. It had none of these things under Sweden's rule. Obviously not everything about Sweden's rule was terrible, either, but it was not some mutual union and friendship. Finland was Sweden's subject, not its ally or equal partner. Just because Finland as a nation in a modern sense did not exist doesn't mean Sweden had any business subjecting the Finnish people under its rule. Just because the Finnish people weren't unified or didn't all call themselves Finnish back in the day doesn't mean they were Swedish just because Sweden conquered the land they lived on.

You could expand on the Biritish Irish rivalries by going back to take accont of the Irish tribe called the Scotii who invaded Caledonia (to use the Latin Name) and took over the show.

One point about Scotland and England. Don't think it matters now, but it was a Scottish King who rode south to take over |England. This was James I of England, James VI of Scotland.

To be honest, Serbs and Poles seem to dislike all their neighbours.

Welcome to Eastern Europe. There are some big friendships, like Poland-Hungary and Serbia-Romania but for the most part we just like to argue about shit and stay poor.

I have to interrupt you on the so-called 'Sweden-Finland rivalrie'! Finland was never a nation before Sweden started colonizing the area and since Sweden for long time could provide help against Russia the two peoples stayed as friends, -even after the loss of Finland in 1809. During WW2 Sweden sent a lot of shipments to Finland and provided shelter for Finish refugees.
