Morayo & The Ladies Query FG As Pres. Tinubu Approves N90BN For Hajj Subsidy [ HOT TOPIC ]

Ойын-сауық

The Federal Government has come under fire for its recent decision to subsidise the 2024 Hajj with N90 billion despite allocating only N50 billion for the student loan scheme in the 2024 budget.
Education and legal experts have slammed the decision, noting that spending such a humongous amount of money to subsidise Hajj is a misplacement of priority.
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the flag-off of the inaugural airlift for the 2024 Hajj exercise at Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, Birnin Kebbi, Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed that the president had ordered the N90 billion subsidy for the 2024 Hajj.
The VP said the president took this initiative given the economic situation of Nigeria, urging the intending pilgrims to pray for peace, unity, and progress in the country.
Shettima said, “Mr President is committed to this year’s Hajj due to the economic situation. He has contributed N90bn billion to subsidise this year’s Hajj exercise to ensure a smooth and successful operation.
“You may recall that this year, we had a major challenge in announcing the final Hajj fare for the 2024 Muslim pilgrimage due to fluctuations in foreign exchange rates.
“President Bola Tinubu also works round the clock to control the downward spiral of our local currency to bring relief to our pilgrims and other Nigerians.
“A move that eventually succeeded in lowering the fare. The president approved the release of N90 billion to subsidise the cost of pilgrimage for this year’s Hajj,” the VP stated.
Recall that a directive by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria had asked pilgrims to pay an additional N1.9m balance by current foreign exchange rates, before the deadline of March 29, 2024.

I think what’s even more disturbing about this is the fact that this 90BN will not even be inputted into the Nigerian economy but the economy of a country that is doing way better than we are doing. This is simply the government taking money from the pockets of the poor and giving it to another country all in the name of religion Like I always say.. as long as we continue with this delusion called democracy.. Nigeria will never be better

With about 65,047 Nigerian pilgrims from both public and private sectors expected to perform the 2024 Hajj exercise. In total N630Billion to the House of Saud in 2024. Yet Nigeria medical facilities are generally poorly equipped. Many medicines are unavailable, including medications for diabetes or asthma. Hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for health services. Yet emergency services are grossly insufficient, and the blood supply are unreliable and unsafe for transfusion. For serious medical problems, Nigerians are traveling to the United States, Europe, or India for treatment. We are all complicit.

This government is asking for Cyber security levy while providing subsidy of N90 billion for Hajj. The N90 billion is not going to help our economy now. If people cannot fund their trips for Hajj they should stay at home and save towards. At this time, Nigeria has too many issues and it is the wrong time to spend the sum of N90 billion on Hajj. Government should stop subsidy for religious pilgrimage in Nigeria now and always.

Can any one help is the N90 billion a concessionary exchange rate or paid subsidy. The news report seems unclear and confusing of sort. Is it similar to the privilege such as exchange rate for education abroad and medical needs, that has been extended to other areas of intervention by the government? It should be illegal for the federal government to spend money on something that's not appropriated in the budget? Emphasis on concessionary exchange rate Do Nigerians understand what concessionary exchange rate means ?

Hajj operations is an offshore exercise where services are paid for in foreign currency, the US dollars. The mode of payment for hajj fare takes longer usually within six - seven months. Due to the fragile nature of our economy and the exchange rates, especially naira to dollar, forex rates hardly stay within range through the period of pilgrims’ registrations. So, what the hajj industry requested is for the federal government to approve a concessionary exchange rate for this year’s hajj, the reason being that the dollars keep fluctuating against the naira every day.

Bola Tinubu the president, didn't decide to do this hajj subsidy. Nigerians House of Representatives did. They appealed to the president to intervene in the matter of 2024 intending pilgrims before he made the move The facts behind the story (fact is objective not my sentiments or subjective opposition to it which is vehement) the newspapers deliberately take advantage of people’s malaise by reading full stories with such a screaming headline about the federal government approving N90 billion to Nigerian Muslim pilgrims for Hajj. Before the Hajj, the federal government had approved a specific exchange rate of N to a dollar for Nigerian pilgrims. The Hajj fare including the air ticket was then computed based on the approved exchange rate. When it was time for payment of airfare to airliners, the exchange rate rose to N to a dollar after the government floated the forex. The question is this: who is to settle the airliner’s differences because the Hajj pilgrims had paid their Hajj fare based on a government-approved exchange rate? Is the said N90 billion not the differential between the approved dollar rate then and the current dollar rates?
