I was watching Larry The Cable Guy in a program about makin and runnin shine. I am old enough to have been around before NASCAR began but barely. I have heard about the shine runners all my life. Thanks for this video bit. Back in spring of 66 I was actually stopped on a Va. highway and checked to see if I was runnin shine. I had a red 66 Mustang and I guess they thought it fit the profile. LOL

When I turned 16 (1957) I bought a 1947 Merc that a cousin had hauled 'shine with.....it had overload springs that jacked up the rear and I wanted it to sit low in the rear.....while waiting to get replacement springs, I was pulled over every time I took it out for a spin, due to the bags of sand I put in the trunk....sure made my bad boy image with the girls!

My draw to the history in the origins of stock car racing began with the reading “Driving with the Devil” and reading about Raymond Parks, Lloyd Seay, Roy Hall, and Red Byron. I got to go to the Museum and the Pool Room last Summer. I was in Seventh Heaven for a whole day…

Franklin County Virginia is the birthplace of shining on a large scale. You have to read The Wettest County in the World. To see the assembly line that was and still is bootleg whiskey and brandy.

You’ve watched too many movies, sonny…. The Deep South was the wettest and ran the fastest. NC and GA were the wettest, most ornery places on Earth. That’s where dirt track originated, and eventually ASSCAR.

@Mark Howard they're just as racist as you are. I say that because you're already assuming those people are racist, and don't even know anything about them. I'm sure there are some racist people there, but racist people are everywhere. Just for the record, any race can be racist. I have met some of the most racist black people who ever lived. One race of people don't have a monopoly on racism.
