MOONRAKER | Mid-Air Fight Scene - Roger Moore | James Bond

Фильм және анимация

MOONRAKER’s James Bond v Jaws pre-credits fight scene was filmed high above California in May 1978. The footage was shot with an ultra-light titanium camera body, with an experimental plastic lens. Stuntmen Jake Lombard and B.J. Worth took 83 jumps over five weeks to complete filming.
Directed by Lewis Gilbert with Roger Moore as James Bond and Richard Kiel as Jaws, as seen in this scene.

This is the best Bond intro stunt yet. Out the door with no chute. What would you do? He kept his "Bond Cool" thought what to do, didn't panic, and his training kicked in. I know it's all planned out safely but, it's still classic Bond. In my teenage era we used the term: "cool head."

For all _Moonraker_ is derided (mostly deservedly), it _did_ have one or two extremely effective set pieces. Apart from the extraordinarily unlikely circumstance of Jaws surviving his plummet to Earth for comic effect (thus ruining the previously established tension, I feel), this ‘trap’ was legitimately scary. Had Bond failed to reach the pilot in midair, he’d have been a dead man. There was zero room for error. And the G-force simulator trap later on is exceedingly well done - terrifying and even quite surreal.

Pretty lame to have his ripcord pull handle detach. And a circus tent in the middle of nowhere! They could have extended the scene to a Bond-Jaws denouement on the ground, sending the indestructible Richard Kiel over a cliff, à la Octopussy.

Even though the audience knows Bond will survive (as its only ten minutes into the film) the stunning visuals of the actual location shoot add tension to it. Though I have to argue it's a flawed sequence by the change in tone for the final moments to comic relief by adding Jaws trying to flap his arms as well as the change in music tone. They should have just had Jaws fall into the tent and then "walk away" because he is Jaws . Spy who loved me already established the character is indestructible. But it is what it is. But 90 percent of this sequence remains an incredible achievement of stunt work unmatched maybe only by a few Tom Cruise Mission impossible stunts

  • @xj900uk

Probably the best ever pre-credits sequence in the entire movie series. Just slightly edges out the ski-chase and jump from 'Spy Who Loved Me'. Love how Jaws just happens to be there the whole time, presumably hiding in the tiny cramped back of the plane and then just flies in at the end for a quick bite...

I had a life-changingly terrifying experience in one of those Jetstream planes back as an aero engineering student in the early 1990s; I was sitting near the tail taking measurements from instruments for our "flight test" exercises when the pilot deliberately stalled the plane to show us its stall characteristic. Everyone else on board was ready for it but somehow I was taken by surprise first by the loud stall warning alarm sounds and then by the gut-wrenching nose dive and the sight of the sea no longer below us but like a wall of greyish blue in front of us. That falling sensation, the sight of the sea ahead and the belief that death was imminent haunted me for years and I've never flown well since.

@@vickjr98 The Spy Who Loved Me is very good but a) you know how its going to end and b) it's also a bit OHMSS-lite. I love the For Your Eyes Only pre-credit sequence. It's up there with Moonraker. Octopussy is OK. I don't think it's anything particularly special. Goldeneye's pre-credit sequence is too long and Bond 'fly-diving' for the empty aeroplane is cringingly preposterous. As for The World Is Not Enough, the opening pretty much sums up the film - lots of wham-bam but seen it all before. Again, these are my own opinions. Moonraker remains my no.1. I actually think whoever did the camerawork did a great job of not making the stuntmen too obvious. It's brilliantly filmed and edited - and I must admit when I saw the film for the first time (agd 10) and watched Bond get shoved out of the plane, I did think - 'how the hell is he going to get out of this?'

@@vickjr98 I love some of the early pre-credit sequences - From Russia With Love's has a brilliant twist (if a bit unncecesary!), Goldfinger is great fun (like the rest of the film) while the chateau fight in Thunderball is another of my favourites, thanks mainly to John Barry's score and the intensity of the actual fight. The Living Daylights also has a superb opening made even better by that great aerial shot of the three 00s gliding over Gibraltar.

Moonraker is in a way a good film and in another way a bad film. It‘s removed far from anything Bond ever was. The overload of cheesy cartoonyness is terrible. Though I have to say, some gags and one-liners in this movie are actually pretty funny! Even though this is the most outlandish film in the franchise, there is no denying that Moonraker does have 2 scenes that are pretty dark and disturbing instead. Bond in the centrifuge is among the most tense and scariest moments in the series. And Corinne getting brutally killed by Drax’s dogs. These 2 scenes are a bit out of place for such a cartoony film. Drax is an average villain, but I really love his dialog and his great and unique speeches. Jaws falling in love is pretty bad for such a henchman. So while the overload of cartoonyness is pretty bad in this movie, Moonraker is saved big, big time by its fantastic looks! In fact, I think it is the best looking movie in the series! From the first second to the last, it‘s filled up with absolutely beautiful cinematography, extraordinary filmsets designed by Ken Adam and all the models, miniature work and the special effects absolutely have to be praised! It‘s been shot at wonderful locations around the earth! It also has my favourite title song in the series along with a top 3 worthy soundtrack by John Barry! Holly Goodhead is a good Bond girl too, I really like that she also has a sense of humor, like Roger Moore‘s Bond has! I wish the series would have that more often! Overall, Moonraker is a pretty cartoony but spectacular looking movie that I still rank pretty low.

Octopussy has cheesy moments too but it has a dark and realistic story, which I really like! In fact Octopussy is not only my personal favourite Bond film but aslo the perfect mix between dark and serious undertones and fun sillyness
