Thanks mami for the healthy rice free idli and novel dhal free tomato kuzhambu. My mother had a few of these Kal chattis made of stone. It was of black colour, either made of darker stone or bacame darker due to long use. In our village they called it as 'marivai' (மரிவை). It's a shame that out of ignorance many people (like me) may have discarded these old style vessels in preference for easy to maintain steel vessels or non-stick vessels. But now we realise the value of the these 'old age' traditional cooking vessels. Hopefully they make a come back again for good. Same is true with many other traditional stone made kitchen items such as Ammi, Ural and ulakkai, Attu Ural etc which have more or less disappeared from kitchen these days. Besides serving their purpose in kitchen these traditional equipments also served as good exercise equipment, kind of two-in-ones at no extra cost. We even used to have a cute, round, wide mouthed stone mortar called Kundhani (குந்தாணி) which we used for pounding paddy (கை குத்தல் அரிசி), millets (கம்பு, கேழ்வரகு), rice flour (for அரிசி வெல்ல மாவு உருண்டை, இடியாப்பம், முறுக்கு, தட்டை etc). The stone Kundhani was also used for pounding shelled tamarind pods to remove the seeds from the pulp. It was often fun watching two women pounding with ulakkai in rhythmic fashion. Those were the good old times.

Yes, it has all the proteins and minerals from the earthen pot . Very good for health. Waw, Gita Mam you are a versatile cook , you make totally anything out of anything .Like mixing for kolumbu masala you added the fennel seeds . So surely I am going to try this and can’t wait to make this Idli w/Moong dhal. Thank so much for sharing.

Loved your recipe. Can’t wait to try it. The only thing I may change is your gravy. It is cooked so much that all enzymes and antioxidants are dead. But love your video and the stone pot. Thank you.
