I'm here because of a Top 20 list involving scary characters from children's shows, and the Groke was on it. I decided to check out the series out of curiosity and I ended up binge watching it. I just ordered the deluxe comic book off of Amazon, I'm totally hooked!

It was pretty popular in the UK. Everyone knows who they are anyway and most people I know watched it at some point. There was even a Moomin shop in London I went to about 5 years ago, don't know if it's still there.

If my own experience is anything to go by, this show is practically unknown in the US (at least that seems to be the case here in the east. I couldn't say if it's the same in other parts of the country.) I grew up here and had never heard of the Moomins until I happened to come across a video on KZread a couple weeks ago while looking for something else. None of my friends or family seem to know anything about it, either.

I grew up with the original fuzzy felt version in the 1980s by Central Television, this 90s garbage version was awful. The original 70s-80s version is on here so if you want to take a look at what the original was like and its theme tune, then search it.

Just so everyone are on the track here, the creator of the Moomins was Swedish-Finnish author Tove Jansson, but she was also of Finnish nationality. And since she was born and lived in Finland and did her work there (although wrote the books in swedish) Moomins are considered Finnish first. The name "Jansson" is of sweish origin and means "son of Jan" but that holds a little meaning, since Finland is a country with two official languages (Finnish and Swedish).

I used to find this show really creepy as a kid...

I remember watching this when I was on a holiday in Finnland. As a german, I obviously didn't understand anything, but I still insisted in watching the show everytime I saw it was on TV. A few days ago I saw a picture and remembered the show. It's really cute~

Ja sam iz Mostara. Odrasla sam uz ovaj crtani. Najveći trepet u djetinjstvu bila mi je Groka, hahahah. 👻 Ubjedljivo jedan od najkvalitetnijih crtića svih vremena! Čak mi se i u Finsku ide radi ovog crtanog. 😄 A ono što je najkomičnije jeste činjenica da i dan-danas maštam o tome kako ću nekad u životu imati istu kuću kao kod Mumijeva. 😂

I did not know who Moomin is, try searching on KZread and first episode made me love him forever. And right now, I keep on collecting Moomin collectibles. I just so love this creature.❤️❤️❤️

@TehNerdQueen The thing with the moomin universe is that it's a VERY scandinavian setting. It has some extremely dark themes, even with the cute characters, some storylines being about a child so neglected that she turned invisible. Another, and perhaps the thing that traumatized most though, is "Mårran", or "The Groke", who freezes everything around her since she's so lonely and unloved, constantly seeking warmth.

This was before my time, but I knew them because I grew up with the books.

Our childhood is waaaay better than today's kids childhood. We had shows with values like this one, and what do today's children have? Can't compare it
