Moog Matriarch Patching Concepts and Techniques - Sonic LAB

Ғылым және технология

We recently reviewed the Moog Matriarch for Sonic LAB - the semi-modular four oscillator paraphonic synthesizer with stereo filter and delay. Modular specialist Edd Butterworth also got his hands on it and explored the patching concepts made possible by the inclusion of the 3 attenuverters. Often in semi-modular synths, these are overlooked, but can often unlock more complex and creative techniques for the synthesist.
The patching that they allow opens up the power of modular synthesise and are used by Edd to introduce some interesting patching concepts that can be used in any synthesis environment.

Just got the Matriarch a few days ago and was really struggling to reign it in but this video and some others have really helped me tame this beautiful beast. I have a feeling I’ll be discovering this instruments secrets for years to come. I think Bob Moog would be well pleased with this synth.

It's pretty much a 1960s Moog Modular shrunk down into a single package. I have the Grandmother (that I support with 9U of Eurorack for more filters, oscillators, etc.); it is an excellent synth. The Matriarch builds on that to make something really nuts.

Good demo! Another neat trick is taking advantage of using an expression pedal to control things like filter cutoff, LFO rates, attenuator rates, delay rates, etc. The Matriarch is an electronic music playground!

This is very nice demonstration of the fm/rm/am patches. Now, it is important to notice smt - if you for any reason change keyboard voltage output from default +-5 to 0-10 (velocity, aftertouch, mod wheel), it might not play your filter tracking correctly - for instance, if your velocity output is 0-10 velocity effect will be almost none (softest touch will be the same as the hardest one). I was tracking filter as in the last patch and noticed that tracking doesnt work under certain C with 0-10V of keyboard output. Also, play with round robin mode, see how it can lead to different results. Mix in the external modular gear if you have some, even if its the smallest system, opens a world of possibilities. But also note that some modules will require higher voltage (and I am looking at you, Doepfer). My point - do not mess with CV values if you don't have external gear, leave them as default. Matriarch is one of the most beautiful instruments I've ever had in my 30 years of dealing with electronic music.

Thank you for uploading this. Question about the patch starting around 17:00 - Where are the Wave Outs of Oscillators 3 and 4 connected? What is plugged into the input of the upper Attenuator of the Utilities module next to the Modulation module?

Amazing video, please do more Matriarch patching! Just one thing though, it was frustrating trying to follow where each cable was going and I needed to follow the video a few times and made mistakes. It would help so much if we could watch you creating the patch from scratch or if a patch diagram was included.

Not a Synth head but love playing them and for anyone wondering how it is without any modulation? its great as just a 4 osc synth with an an amazing delay and beautiful sound. I might try to get into the patching a bit more, I do use an expression pedal into the filter which I love but all the rest is Greek to me. Anyway by far the finest synth I've owned. Unless of course they release a simple 4osc mono version with the Delay and Spring reverb with no patch's and built in velocity and aftertouch. Dream Synth for sure.

What do you mean. I use to have a computer with midi in, thru, and out, but I couldn't effect my keyboard with the computer. That was 20 years ago. My wife thru out my computer at a recycling facility without keeping the midi hardware. I wanted to break her neck. She said I wasn't using it so she figured out it was junk. She is an idiot. I told her never to touch me equipment again.

I think your synchs aren’t working - they cascade from left to right. So any light not on indicates neither that one nor the ones to the right are synched. So all your patches where Osc 2 is not synched have none synched even though the lights of 3 and 4 might be on.

That's what I figured. In a video I made about the attenuators I admit that I haven't got a clue. Your right, the sound starts on the left and works it way to the right. So when I run a wire, I have my output on the right side and my input on the left, but I still can't anticipate the results.

6:28 Thank you. He isn't showing where some wires output comes from. I made a video on my Matriarch attenuators and I basically can't just make a patch for a violin sound. You can draw a patch on the diagrams, but when you, at a later time, follow the diagram, the patch doesn't sound the same. So in my videos I admit that I haven't a clue how a patch effect will resault. It's like the movie A Nightmare Before Christmas where Jack Skelington is trying to figure out what Christmas means, so he does all these experiments, gets frustrated and bangs his head.
