Moody is back - but is this really only 41ft? The new Moody 41DS
Спорт
As they have been doing since the 1980s, Moody and Bill Dixon once again redefine what's possible on a deck saloon cruising monohull. Wait till you see the stowage beneath the galley! Priced from €399,000 ex tax

What an incredible boat....well done Moody. It's definitely at the top of list at this point in time. Simply stunning.
Absolutely amazing. It’s like a magic trick. All that in 41 feet! Totally incredible.
Impressive design... She doesn't look or feel like a 41. Successful compromise in the creation of a multi-motor-mono-yacht. Well done indeed.
This is a game changer, definitely going to influence the design community.

Love it, no more looking at catamarans. This is a game changer, you are so right.
This looks like a perfect combination of modern design aligned to extended living, practically and price. Looking forward to a sailing review to see how it handles the weather.
We also hat a close look at the ne Moody 41 because we were curious whether its comparable to our Sirius40DS "Amazing Grace". In a nutshell: we agree, the Moody 41 is a very nice concept which enriches the market of deck saloon yachts... but we would newer trade it for our Sirius 40DS. There are so many things which come to our minds. It starts with the center cabin right in the middle of the boat below the saloon. You sleep there like a baby, even in rough seas. It continues with the workshop and the easy access to the engine. Our new Volvo Penta broke and hat to be exchanged in Scotland on our cruise around Europe. This was no big deal because it comes in last at the shipyard and can be easily replaced. I could not imagine how this would work with the Moody. We have a twin keel and have used it frequently in tidal areas, esp. with strong winds not to swing at anchor for a couple of hours. Finally, when you look at the execution of all parts: it's all about strength, safety and perfection. It probably makes a huge difference when the owner of the shipyard lives a couple of months on the first boat before productions starts. To put it short: after five years of sailing the Sirius 40DS we are more than ever convinced that this is a true blue water boat for all waters

I am used to seeing only traditional layouts in the boats and when I saw 40DS for the first time my mind got shocked by how did I miss this possibility. We were looking for a catamaran of a smaller size but I think now we can have almost the best of these two worlds. The size is much more manageable in rough seas in North Atlantic I think compared to the similar size, similar price cats.

Glad to see a comment from a 40DS owner comparing the two. They both look very stunning, but I have felt like the Sirius is just slightly better laid out, and if I was in the market for a mono, it would be at the top of my list.

I have no doubt that the 40DS is very high quality/reliably built, but the 40DS is an excellent floating caravan and not a blue water sailboat by any means. Take a look at a Rustler 44DS sailboat and you'll see why the 40DS is not a blue water sailboat. There are serious differences between sailing from marina to marina and sailing on the oceans.
I always used to look at the Oyster yachts with their deck saloon style accommodation and think, "I'll never be able to afford one of these!". And then I looked at the 54DS a d thought the same! But now, with this 41, I an believe I'll be able to buy one (2nd user, of course) in the future! This is also a great boat for those who are maybe getting on a little and would normally have to go to a motorboat! With their inside helm position and very safe side decks, these people can still be taken by the wind on their travels!
Yep please don't be afraid to send it over here absolutely stunning
That is an astonishingly beautiful boat. The room is unbelievable for 41'. The walk in salon is an engineering marvel. I've never seen that on a sailboat.
It's kind of great to see that the essential parts of the Moodys' deck saloon have been fitted in a boat this size. And this kind of video with through-out slow filming is just great. Might get idea or two to my boat plans from there... 🙂
What a fab boat, a hybrid monohull and guess the liveaboards are really going to love this one.
Wow.. That's a really great layout and design. That would really be something I would look for in ten years, when I retire. Nice yacht Moody.
Wow! That kitchen basement is incredible!

It's massive isn't it? lol That's where I'd install my 'hurt locker', the quick deployed belt fed machine gun for those close encounters of the Somali kind round the Gulf of Aden when I'm snorkeling the azure waters of Horn of Africa.
Wow. Such a clever design. It's thinking different and I love to see it. Well done Moody/Hanse/Bill Dickson. and you're right Toby - when you don't try and cram multiple cabins into a design it opens up the options and makes it work really well.
Deserves yacht of the year.. super impressed!
I have been quite keen to see this new model. Thanks much, great job.
Very well done interior layout. One of the few bigger boats that I actually like given I'm usually into much smaller vessels. Definitely what I would buy if I was in the market for such a boat for my wife and I.
It's good to see yacht builders and marine engineers start to design boats with space and comfort in mind like catamarans have been doing for years. Perhaps Moody will see more sales as this design really makes the monohull seem like a large catamaran in a 41-foot vessel! I really love the thoughtfulness and design behind every nook and cranny on this boat. I love the way the cabinets and drawers open and close. There is a feeling of minimalism everywhere, which nothing exposed to get in the way. It's a very clean design that I believe many people will enjoy. The DS deck design also seems to lend itself to allowing for a lot of Solar panels on top. I am hoping Moody has designed the boat to take advantage of the now affordable solar technologies as well as the LiFePo batteries that require storage. I am a great advocate for self-sustained living and ECO-friendly designs. Thank you for taking to the time to make this video. Have an amazing day!
Staggeringly good if not magical use of volume. What a piece of kit.
I hope they let you take it out sailing Toby. Love this boat. Great review.

Smart design!
I really appreciate this design and I like it very much. Clever use of space and plenty of liveable area and stowage in a relatively smallish package. My only issue and it would be a deal breaker is that I wonder how sturdy and waterproof those doors into the salon are in case of capsizing? These doors look like they belong on a catamaran where the possibility of capsizing is minimal, but this is a monohull so the risk is greater.
I'm in love. Moody does it again.
True. Two cabin makes great cruiser
Wow, great tour Toby. I’ll take mine with the A1/B4 layout, and shallow draft keel. Reckon I’ll be quite happy with that boat. Very clever design. Well done Moody.

Best monohull of this size yet! I'd love to see how it sails!
I’ve never seen anything like it. I don’t know how I feel about it. Like you said, it really is a cross between a motor yacht, a catamaran, and a sailboat. It’s confusing if I’m being honest. I feel like there’s a lot of potential for it to grow on me. As it stands though, the only word I can use to describe what I’m feeling is confused. It’s almost as if a Beneteau Swift Trawler morphed and grew some wings as it evolved into its final form. I love the swift trawler but wouldn’t be able to afford it because it’s a power yacht. This is like everything I could possibly want. The best if both worlds. I think it’s just going to take a while for me to get used it. It really is like nothing else out there.
beautiful boat, amazing layout and design

Compliments to Tobi and Moody from us as well!
Love this boat...Really nice.. Thanks
She reminds me a lot of the Winga 87 build in Sweden some 35 years ago. She is only a 28f but with nearly the same build up. The Winga is a great sailer at her time and I prefer the main bedroom midships. I would love the moody 2 feet shorter because of all the harbour cost from 12m onwards in the med. If one is looking for a boat ones you are a pensioner you have to think of how to minimise daily costs.
If there is any swell and cornering waves from behind all of those are immediatelly entering the pilot house as there is nothing to keep it out. In a sens you could say this is a self draining cockpit.
Very cool boat. Nice living spaces.
Wow that is a great layout
The Galley might be difficult in rough seas. And I’d be interested how she handles in a marina with the wind on beam! But very impressive looking boat - just showed the wife and she likes her - so that’s a bonus! Sea trial video please!!
What a great option for a long term, or live aboard couple with the occasional guest. Plenty of space, yet small enough to be handled by one and will fit into smaller harbor spaces..
Beautiful - although not for heavy southern ocean weather.
I can't help but think it is not for sailing but for entertaining whilst spending almost all its life in the marina....
Wow... I’m in love
She reminded me with the dufour Atoll 4, but the dufour has 4 cabins with simple design 👌

I found the Sirius smarter, the volume under the seats and table is better used with a real room (a workshop) and for the central bedroom. And you still have the massive stowage under the galley's corridor. I prefer the moody's style though. More modern.

Not so fast my friend, depends on the quality of this boat. 40 foot Cats in this price range have quality of spec /starter home. The quality here seems much better. Then their is maintenance and marina fees which are more on Cats. Then the resale value down the road. In the end it really gets down to preference. Cat people buy cats and monohull people buy monohulls .
For a sailing boat it's very nice.
How safe is all that glass? As an ex-Merchant Mariner, I know the strength and power of a random, big green wave arriving unexpectedly. This is truly a beautiful boat but I would worry about about a big wave hit.
That is how ever a good size cockpit storage

Interesting packaging. The saloon is indeed like a narrow catamaran.
Very nice.
OMG! That's massive for 41'!!
This confuses me, I'm not a fan of DS normally but this really appeals to me plus I feel it's reasonably priced.
a little concerned about visibility from those helm stations, and how it'll sail in general. Seems like a pretty cool concept overall though.
Impressive.
I am really surprised that the awning doesn’t roll up. Many powerboats use a roll up awning on the back.
Really interesting. How does the DS handle the green water issue ?
Thanks for this review Toby, It looks great. How does it compare to the older 45? It’s obviously smaller but I noticed a deeper keel on this one. Does it sail better? So there a much difference to the interior space? It still seems a little small for a true bluewater cruiser??
seems an like an awesome boat for a couple to live on. Only bad thing from this video... The kitchen looks great, but on sail boat, you can't use it while sailing. Same for the inside table. I'd be curious to see the visibilty at the wheel.
has the look and feel of a power boat/motor sailor, wonder how it sails
Really like the ds models. Are Moody thinking about a twin keel design ever for versatility the explore areas that dry out. Sirius seem very popular in this regard but are really expensive in comparison
Lots of space....but it really is more like motor yacht then a sailboat. Does it sail?
This boat looks so user friendly, super comfortable, super safe... i want one.

Clever design.. sailboat + catamaran
How about some performance numbers?
Is the lighting fluorescent?
Terrific, though I think the Sirius 40DS trumps it on accommodation...
they should install a windshield wiper front of the interior pilot station
Radical design and a lot of thought have clearly gone into it so Moody & Mr Dixon are to be commended for pushing the boundaries and all that but I can't help thinking it's maybe trying to be too many things at once in which case whatever you do with it will feel like too much of a compromise. One thing's for sure, nobody who buys or reviews one will have much negative to say, they never do. You'll need that cavernous cockpit locker to store all the cushions when under way...
Hope it never takes a wave over the back side, Water will go straight into the cabin.

Yes Dave... I see what you mean. I was loving the design but after your comment I had to re watch the video and you right, that is a big concern. I cannot see anywhere a large breaching wave could go, I suppose some may pass off stern behind the steering positions, but the bulwark wraps partially around the stations so a large volume of water is probably going to end up in the cockpit. There may be some integrated deck deck drainage we cannot see... but for that kind of volume ???

Fantastic accommodations but I think I will keep my oyster 435 cutter ketch DS and upgrade electronics every 5 years. Can do a lot of meat and it’s an upgrade projects for €400,000.
I think thats a bit of a redickuless placement of the compass I mean, it's got to be 8-10 feet away from your Helm station.should your chart plotter ever go down and you haven't to go back to sailing by your compass cause you just know that's the kinda thing that would happen in heavy weather

I agree !!! Hard to tell from the video but I don't see any side deck scuppers ( or maybe one each side if those are not water/diesel fills ). Given the height of the combings, I see the potential for a lot of water to end up end the cockpit. With the cockpit level with the deckhouse entrance, I would certainly hope the entrance is waterproof.
