When they first broadcast the Proust summarising sketch, the BBC made them turn the sound down for the words "and masturbation". They were allowed to leave in the hobby of strangling animals though. Which is a peculiar moral stance to take.

Sandy Wilson's "The Devils." Sandy Wilson wrote a musical stage play called "The Boy Friend," which was turned into a movie by the great British film director Ken Russell. Russell did a movie about a 17th Century witch hunt called "The Devils." So in this Python sketch, Sandy Wilson directs his own (musical) version of "The Devils." Nobody asked for this explanation, but there it is anyhow.

That makes sense. Wilson was reportedly unhappy with Russell's version of "The Boy Friend." So here he gets "revenge."

2:06 Proust was a French author, whose 1913 novel "In Search of Lost Time" is one of the longest ever written. Taking up seven volumes and something like 4,000 pages, the idea of summarising it in 15 seconds is very silly :)

Just to recap what I said in the original post: 1) I am glad you decided not to expel mucus at us on camera. 2) I am sorry you've been ill. 3) I'm glad you're feeling better enough to post MP videos. Seeing someone else watch these for the first time and appreciate them is a joy. Have fun!

Discovered MP as an American 13 yr old in the 80’s late at night on PBS. No other network would have allowed all the blood and nudity. Couldn’t have binge-watched it back then, but I’m binging these reactions. Fun stuff, D!

Oh heavens, episode 31 was the favorite of my brother and me for the longest time and we'd pretty much quote the whole thing over and over again. To our mother's distress. So many absolutely brilliant things such as the start again fellow, the phone conversations (we'd actually have a few of those over the years, to just take the piss out of people listening on each side), Eamonn & hope for a constitutional settlement, Eric Idle's rant and going upstairs and so on and on. A sleeper hit, followed by *yet another* favorite, I'm not going to rant more about 32 but the Gumbys were also big favorites. So dumb, but so much serotonin~ No-one replied you? The couple has numbers on their backs since they're obviously dressed up for a dance competition. :)

I started watching these in grade school... I was around 12 years old. They knocked me over... my parents are from Dublin (I'm in Toronto)... they got a big kick out of them too. My friends and I started doing the sketches at recess, accents and everything. We would just shout out "NO ONE expects the Spanish Inquisition !!" in front of teachers... they were utterly confused... thought maybe a student revolt was in the works.... it was a GREAT time..

Around 85,000 extant species of molluscs are recognized. A handful of mollusc species are sometimes considered hazards or pests for human activities. The bite of the blue-ringed octopus is often fatal, and that of Octopus apollyon causes inflammation that can last over a month. Stings from a few species of large tropical cone shells can also kill, but their sophisticated, though easily produced, venoms have become important tools in neurological research. Schistosomiasis (also known as bilharzia, bilharziosis, or snail fever) is transmitted to humans by water snail hosts, and affects about 200 million people. Snails and slugs can also be serious agricultural pests, and accidental or deliberate introduction of some snail species into new environments has seriously damaged some ecosystems.

That speech Eric Idle gives when arranging the holiday, I have most of it memorized. Not on purpose, mind you. I had a Monty Python CD called the final rip off, and it had sketches on it, plus Hollywood Bowl performances of new sketches. I probably listened to it almost every day for like 5 years. I just started saying the lines and realized I had it memorized. Just found myself doing it while watching, and just thought i'd share. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

But i also find myself saying stop it when u were saying john was annoying. I love when he does the exagerated cough. And the thin on one end bit. As a MP fan you should never say anyone of the boys is annoying. But i still think u r a sweetheart!!
