The New Travel I think that’d be a very interesting comparison, as they are very different cities in so many ways. On the whole, I prefer Montréal a little more due to its culture, history, general affordability, and a very nice level of urban density throughout (minus the crappy weather around Feb/Mar/Apr). How do you like Montréal so far? Think you’ll make it your home?

I live in Guadalajara, México and I love the weather, the culture, the people and the food! I like that it is a big city but still keeps that kind of little mexican town soul to it. It's awesome! But I definitely would like to live for a year or two in Montreal!

The green alleys of Verdun have been such a blessing for my local friends and I during COVID. We can safely gather at a distance and catch up without being on a sidewalk on in a crowded park. It's also made walks to the grocery store less nervewracking. The alleys in Verdun aren't quite up to par with the plateau's, but they're pretty fun regardless.

Ruelles were originally used to give easy access to homes for such things as the delivery of coal, for heating. When I was a kid that's where the trucks would pick up the trash. Nowadays they tend to be used as "milieux de vie": playing space for kids, etc. One big advantage of ruelles vertes is that they help make the city greener, which reduces heat in the summer. Also, they do help develop a sense of community, like you said in the video. People who would normally ignore their neighbors will get to know them if they work together setting up/maintaining a green alley. One unknown gem in the Plateau: rue Demers (between Hôtel-de-Ville and Henri-Julien, just south of Boulevard St-Joseph. Very original rue/ruelle, predates actual ruelles vertes. Go check it out! Keep up the good work, bravo in improving your french, and don't forget: people here refer to themselves as Québécois, not Canadians. Quebec is not Canada, it's a different nation altogether!

As a quebecoise and Montrealer, I can tell you that we played a lot in back alleys in my childhood growing up in the 90s. It was actually very popular back then. Now with technology and all that, i guess it's very different now, not as much kids playing in back alleys. But they still do in small towns, my mom is from Rouyn-Noranda which is far up north. Every summer i go visit some family there and i can see kids are still playing in back alleys over there a lot more. All that being said, great video, keep it up!

Grew up in the early 2000's and I can't tell you the amounts of street wide water gun/nerf/lazer sword battles I've had in the back alley. We would use both the 3 back gardens and the street itself and combined it was this gigantic playing field. I still see and hear some kids play in the back alley at my mom's whenever I'm there, but these days, seems like the front street gets used more because there back alley kids have all grown up, and no new ones from the other street have replaced them yet.

Dan has a sensible soul , his videos are adventurous but always respectable for the local and highlight the Culture of the place he visited 😊

I'm a Montrealer and I can safely say that your French is better than you think, just keep immersing yourself and you'll be fine in a few years. One thing I will say thought is that if you're from montreal, you dont say MONtreal, you pronounce it MUNtreal. It's the easiest way to spot a tourist or Anglo-Canadian :) Ruelles are the best though, great place to play as a kid. Hockey games, bugs, animals, tons of house to look at. Great in the winter to cross-country ski everywhere

The ruelle vert/green alleys are amazing. Yes, they are beautiful and one of the simple things in life that bring joy; that is what I love about Montreal. Merci for showcasing them to your audience. On my street, we had a free library like the ones in your community but when the pandemic came, someone destroyed it and now we don't have one. Sad really. I used to put my old used books in there for people to take and I'd also on occasion get a book or two. Be safe. Ça va bien aller.

As a Montréalais (and former Torontonian), I can absolutely vouch for this episode’s authenticity - the Green Alleyways are a real gem in Montréal, hidden behind almost every other residential street. Most residents take great care to volunteer our time to take care of these alleys, like planting flowers, building mini librairies, and maintaining them throughout the year. They are often so quiet, lush, and green to walk through, and also just a great place to hang out with your friends or pets after work over a pint or bottle of wine.

Fantastic , peaceful and friendly, Montreal looks like a safe caring city. Good job Dan

Great video! I went to Montreal last summer and I LOVED the city! I literally wanted to go and live there for a couple of years, and I couldn't put my finger on what made me like it so much, but you just made me realize, it was all that green and the nature blending with the french architecture! It's awesome!

Thanks for the lovely walk through the beautiful greenery of Montreal, Dan... those alleys are so lush and beautiful! (BTW, that was Parc De Lorimier you stumbled upon.) Montreal and CDMX are two of the most special cities in North America and even share similarities. No surprise you appreciate Montreal as you do! Awesome walk!

Fun fact the city green alleys is usually maintained by the local boroughs of the greater Montreal area. So you if you see those alleys, its because the city at the borough level, works with willing home owners or dwellers to increase the green spaces. This is how you can find murals, shared seating, toys, books and even shared elevated gardens for the community to enjoy. I love my city, I think if I move i would miss these little things.

How I love my city! That video makes me want to go back to summertime. I miss the green haha! The lack of trees and actual parks is something that really surprised me the first time I visited cities outside of Quebec, especially New York! To me, having trees everywhere is so natural, so normal, it's weird when I visit a city and there's just concrete everywhere. Makes me really grateful for the beauty of my city. People from the suburbs only see traffic and pollution when they think of Montreal. Me, that's what I see. The vegetation. The hood vibes. The proximity.

Thank you for reminding people that these alleys are by and for the residents! Ive seen so many tourists take ours over for photoshoots and they come in very large groups. Its flattering and all, but its a bit invasive. Love your content

Thanks for sharing! You picked a great area to explore. Montreal is such a massive city, I have lived here for most of my life, but always out in the suburbs. There is so much magic in the city centre, it's almost dream like. Fairy tale alley ways, art everywhere - just so vibrant and beautiful. Out in the suburbs, it's just big streets, cars, strip malls and plain suburban houses. You have inspired me to take a trip down there and take some pics! Also, I just have to say, you actually sound slightly French! The first time I saw one of your videos I thought, wow, what an odd accent for someone from the Prairies. Then I saw one of your videos from Victoria and realized, omg, your accent has changed!

Hey, I don't know if it'll help you, but I was watching you struggle to pronounce "Ruelle Verte" and 1) THANK YOU for trying even if it's really hard, and 2) To produce the R sound in ruelle, try to add the sound it would make if you softly cleared your throat (yours sounds closer to a vocalised h sound), or if you tried to purr like a cat. I love our green alleys! I grew up in the middle of cement and buildings but there's always trees around and beautiful alleys, even if the poorest areas (like where I grew up; in the South-West around Monk metro on the green line). And the street art! I absolutely love stumbling upon huge beautiful murals that seem to just pop out of nowhere sometimes. It's awesome as usual to see my hometown through your eyes. I'm so glad you're enjoying this city ^^

Our r is purely evil unless you grew up using it 😂 I did some research on how French came to be and essentially, it's a romanised (Latin) version of the Germanic tribes living in that area. So it's German + Latin in a way?! I think you see it most in our r and a few other harsh throat sounds. Seriously though, you're doing a great job French wise, it's not an easy language to learn so props to you ^^

@@TheNewTravel Not sure if it makes you feel any better but the North American English R sound (the alveolar approximant) is pretty hard to master for French speakers. Words loaded with R's, TH's and initial H's are hell for ESL francophones. The modern standard French R (the uvular fricative) is rough for English speakers (and oddly, most other Romance language speakers) to learn but you also still hear the uvular trill (still sounded in the back of the throat but clearly rolled - think of a German or Scottish R) in French, particularly in certain regional accents and dialects especially with older speakers. If that uvular fricative R too elusive, you can try using the uvular trill... basically just a back of the throat rolled R, as opposed to the Latin tip-of-the-tongue rolled R typical in say Spanish or Italian (the alveolar trill). The trilled R is basically the standard R of pre-revolutionary French so you still hear it a lot in Quebec (it's one of those little archaic traits in Canadian French). I naturally alternate between the two Rs all the time in my own native speech since it was the standard R used by my parent's generation in their native region. I've heard KZreadrs with regional French accents (including a linguist) using that R regularly. It's common in Germanic languages and seems to be a bit less difficult for English speakers to pick up (heck, it's the standard R in a Scottish accent so basically just think of it as a Scottish R if that helps make it less intimidating). In Canadian French, it will give you a bit of an old-fashioned working class or rural sound but it won't sound "not French". An anglo ex-Montrealer buddy of mine uses it pretty much exclusively in his French and he just sounds kind of blue collar and informal.

Sorry to say but Toronto is the opposit of Montréal. A Soulness city with no cultural identity. JUST a place to work and go home to watch Netflix.

The park at the corner of Laurier and Chabot is De Lorimier park. Back alleys are the gems of neighbourhoods. They're not used for trash anymore. For us, it's where the kids meet up to play and the neighbours meet up to talk. As for the names, it's the neighbours that give them their names, so it's not official and it's not on any maps.

This is why I really really want to move out of Alberta and go to anywhere but where I am now (Calgary). Cities like Vancouver and Montreal has a lot of different great concepts and cultural movements. Here in Calgary, ..... OMG it is so bad.

Oh this makes my heart ache. Still miss it and nothing else will ever feel like home to me. Vancouver is a souless place and so illogically organized. The unendingly grey winters took a lot of getting used to as did the outrageous prices for absolutely everything. Can't get spruce beer soda out here or much in the way of maple flavoured food and no St Viateur bagels, sigh. Have you been to Santropol down on St Urbain? The people are friendlier and just more real in Montreal. I have compelling reasons to be here for the time being but my heart will always be in Montreal....

That's about right. It get cooler at night towards the middle of August, but is still 20-23° in the day. Plus, people who live here and toughed out many winters are going to milk summer for every drop before giving into fall clothing.

Love watching your videos about Montreal! Gonna be moving there soon (actually I was supposed to be there already, but.. covid didn't help), and it's a good way to keep hopeful. ^^ Can't wait to explore the city in real life. (:

This is my true horrific experience that happened to me renting apartments in Montreal, i had to look for a new apartment to rent due to having to leave my apartment i was at due to fire damages that was caused by another tentant in apartment complex,anyhow i soon there after found a new apartment,this new apartment was renting for $1100.00 it had just been renovated and really nice and clean,however my horrific experience was just about to get much worse,just at the time the covid19 outbreak came around i was settling into my new apartment and really happy i had found a new place,so i thought...i soon began feeling very sick in this apartment and i kept trying to figure out why i was feeling this way,well to keep this short,i found out after 5 months and becoming really sick that drug dealers had rented and set up a crystal meth lab in an apartment agent to my mine and the fumes from cooking or making this crystal meth drug had been seeping into my apartment and getting me very very sick, still today i have lingering bad symptoms do to the meth poisoning, i have seen doctors and explained to them about my bad experience,i have persistance symptoms of lung problems, sinuses and bad migrains,i found out the chemical these drug dealers were using to make or cook this crystal meth was called Ether,Ether is a mix of sulfuric acid and alcohol along with other very toxic dangerous chemicals,however the Ether chemical mix has a very deceiving sweet smell not a bad smell which makes it deceiving to the sense of smell leaving you thinking how wounderful the air smells around one, because Ether is very difficult to detect in the air because it blends well with other smells,chances are one becomes poisoned before figuring out, if you`ve rented apartments before you know you will have all kinds of new smells around,how i found out there was a crystal meth lab next to my apartment is another story,by that time i had found out i had been poisoned really bad, but what was just as bad as getting poisoned sick is that when meth contamination seeps into apartments,everything becomes contaminated,i mean everything,from cloths to furniture,tv bed,frigo ect ect to the smallest objects,everything nothing escapes,i couldn`t take anything with me due to meth residue contamination,these meth lab residue spores are really really bad,they will linger in everything for years and continue making one very sick, it is very very hard to wash or get rid of,i had to dispose of everything i had,thousands of dollars lost,all my belongings,it was horrible so horrible,the land lord of the building had no idea this was going on and only later to find out, from what i have found out,these dangerous meth lab apartments are quite common,real scary,i rent from a friend now and will never again rent from strangers,i still feel sick with lasting bad symptoms and fearing for my health over time,please i would like to know if any readers reading this had similar experience,please feel free to reply,the Ether mix is of sulfuric acid and alcohol making it very toxic and poisonous,very hard to detect it`s fumes in the air because of it`s sweet smell plus these fumes and spores could travel long distance if in buildings,buildings where meth labs were set up are health risks for all tenants in building,other chemicals also used are ammonia and acetone in the making of crystal meth,Renters beware.
