Montmartre, Paris ... Off the Tourist Track
This is a look at the hilly Montmartre area of Paris, with emphasis on the parts of the butte that are off the well-worn tourist track.
I've already made a video that shows the touristy parts of Montmartre, such as Sacré-Cœur basilica and the artists' square (place du Tertre). You can find that on my channel, or there's a link to it at the end of this video. This considerably longer video explores just about everything except those touristy areas. Of course, all of Montmartre (and all of Paris) attracts tourists, but the density of tourists declines by at least a factor of 100 once you are off the beaten track.
There is a great deal to see in Montmartre, and this video cannot do it proper justice in 38 minutes. It's much more interesting to walk through this neighborhood than it is to see a video about it. However, I've tried to capture as much of a reasonable cross-section of Montmartre as I could, for those who don't or won't have the opportunity to see it in person.
The video shows places like the rue Lepic, avenue Junot, place Dalida, rue Cortot, rue Saint Vincent, rue des Trois Frères, rue des Abbesses, rue Caulaincourt, rue Lamarck, the Suzanne Buisson garden, the two main cemeteries on the butte, assorted stairways, other gardens, and points of interest (such as several shooting locations from the movies "Amélie" and "Ronin"), and so on.
If this videos seems quiet, that's because Montmartre is a lot quieter than the rest of Paris, since the twisty little streets discourage through traffic.

65 years ago I lived behind the Moulin Rouge and went up the Rue Lepic to school. This video certainly brought back memories !
My daughter and I stayed here, walked these same streets, last October. We stayed in a charming apt. on Rue Custine and I took a picture of my daughter at that quaint flower shoppe. I even got cough medicine at the pharmacy you show. Oh, thank you! This video is wonderful, sending it to my daughter. Can't wait to return to lovely Montmartre. I collected many chestnuts from Montmartre Cemetery and have them in a bowl under a painting of a Montmartre cafe in my home in Atlanta.
Montmartre is the sort of place where you walk down four different streets and yet mysteriously pass the same corner three times, without ever figuring out why. But it's great fun!
You give us the feeling as if we are with you. Thank you for this pleasure.
Thank you for posting this! Handheld or not, the camera work is excellent, and I started to get a feel for what Montmartre is like, something I'll never be able to do in person. For a half-hour, I was out of my drab apartment and wandering streets of Paris! Merci beaucoup!
Very nice video. Anyone who has been to Paris and misses it will enjoy this video stroll.

I miss it so much. I stayed right here and walked these same streets. That charming flower shoppe, the quaint cafes, exploring the winding, hilly cobblestoned streets...buying crepes fraise et nutella from street vendors and a fresh baguette from the little boulanger (went to two that you show) excellent video work!

ironpirites Ow I was there in 2012. This video brings back so much memories. I walked all these streets with my parents 😭 Wanna come back soon 💔
Bonjour, I never get tired of viewing and reviewing ALL your wonderful Parisian videos. They are the most effective way of rapidly bring back good memories from my three trips in this lovable city. Thank you very much and, please, don't stop...
Ah memories! My wife, me,14month old and ~4yr old we're on our two week trip of of a lifetime to Paris and the Loire River Valley in mid-May of 1999. We rented an apartment in the 11th Arrondissement and "did" Paris, pushing our kids all over in our double stroller. We ascended the funicular up to Sacre-Coeur on a beautiful day. Such views, the best of Paris (besides the Eiffel Tower). Could hardly believe we were there! Many human statues that were a dramatic challenge (somewhat scary)to our very young children were working hard not moving at the entrance to the Basilica. We did walk through the adjacent commercialized artist square to experience the energy and atmosphere of what it may have been like back in its heyday. We then walked all the down the steep street to the right passing the famous pink restaurant on the right-hand side corner. Finally spilling out next to the originally restored Metro station across from the iconic windmill lit Moulin Rouge.. The square was full of German tour buses whose passengers were there for the "cultural" assets of the area. Our kids were way too young and sleepy to notice. That was twenty years ago. Glad we were able to visit then and not now. We enjoyed perfect weather the entire two weeks! Thanks Paris, you were a perfect unreal fantasy come to life!
Thank you so much for sharing this. Very well done. I went there when I was eighteen, which was like seventeen years ago, and it's still a memory I return to often. Every time I think about wandering the streets of Monmartre I get a natural high. This video amplified that effect so, thank you. I also like that you didn't put any music, the background noise made me feel like I was there. Cheers!
Muchas gracias y felicitaciones.
Awesome video for retiree who may never return to Paris. Thank you (somebody) for the subtitles. It really helps the hearing impaired!

I put in the closed captions myself. I figured that would give viewers the option of narration or no narration, and I didn't want any cheesy music or a droning voice interfering with the actual ambient sounds that you hear when you are actually there.

Beautifully done! Paris is often described as being a series of small villages, and no part is more "villagey" than Montmartre, especially the area covered in this video. Years ago I had good friends who lived in this part of Montmartre, and as a result I was able to get acquainted with the area and its bistros, cafes and bars, all without a tourist in sight (the gods be praised). Again, terrific job.

No, I'm a local myself.
We stayed at hotel Roma at the top of Rue Coulincourt our 1st holiday without our parents I was 17. We explored montmartre extensively, still my favourite part of Paris. The year after I was 18 I went on my own and stayed at Tim hotel Montmartre Lovely to see X
Brilliant video of Montmartre spent a lot of time here in my youth and really miss it.Sadly not as young as I once was and have not been back for quite a few years. This brought back lots of good memorys for me so thanks for posting.
Words cannot even BEGIN to express what a treasure your videos are! And also, appreciation for the time involved in making them and in post production! That you have only used the sounds around you, is what makes them all the more such a treasure. Thank you for these gems.
Love the sound of voices echoing off the apartment walls. I was there for two weeks and didn't spend as much time as I should have in Montmartre. The little time I did spend there was way more enjoyable than the crowds and annoying vendors in the tourist spots. Next time i go, I'll spend more time off the tourist track and more time exploring areas like this. Thank you for posting the video ***** it brings back memories of my trip. :)
I've been looking for a video of Montmatre to watch JUST LIKE THIS ONE. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I've been to Paris 5 times and this is definitely off the tourist track. I love these quiet streets to walk on were tourist never get to see and only locals know. Great video.

Happy to help. That's the main idea behind my Paris videos: to show you exactly what it looks like so that you have a taste of Paris in advance, or a view of Paris if you can't actually visit the city.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Whenever I miss Paris I watch the video and feel as if I am there:) This is a magnificent artistic video.
C est excellent ! Merci ! J allais a l,école des Sœurs rue Norvins dans mon enfance ..eons ago ! Brought me back ..Love your script and coordination with videos -nice sense of photographie - thank you! A certaine sensibility in your presentation much appreciated :)

Thank you for your very kind comments.
Merci for this realistic video of the Montmartre area. We are planning a trip to Paris for later this year and have your videos streaming on our tv. Even though we have been to Paris before, in the 1990's, your videos will be of great help.
Paris - the world's most refined and most charming city.
Super!!!!
this video is captivating.Montmartre is such a special quarter.thks
Thank you Mxsmanic for two fantastic videos. Without comment or music, the feel and atmosphere of these lovely French districts was perfect. I was lost in a world of real France for 3 hours.----- So much so that my legs ached from climbing those hundreds of steps of Montmartre. Thank you again !!
What a beautiful walk through Montmartre, I loved to walk with you.

C'EST TRES JOLI! MERCI POUR CES SOUVENIRS! MEILLEURES AMITIES DE MOSCOU-RUSSIE!
Turning the camera to view the places just passed is an excellent idea and gives an extra feel to the scenes.!!!! Wonderful, casual and 'atmospheric'!
Great video! I've always dreamed of visiting Paris in my retirement, but I'm afraid that's just not in the cards. Your film is the next best thing to being there! Thanks, so much!
very nice video! a nice look at every day Paris

Exquisite! So well done. Your comments were brilliant and the silence otherwise was so relaxing. My husband and are sold and will include Montmartre in our trip this Fall.
Thank you...I need to watch it again with a map alongside me! I can't wait to return to Paris!
Thank you for your painstaking efforts in making this outstanding video of an outstanding locality in Paris that is more a piece of art than anything else.
Merci!
Yes, this is one of the reasons why this whole series of places in Paris is so fantastic. The videos capture the ambient sounds of each location in exacting realism. One thing I particularly like is hearing the sound of wind in the trees.
thanks much for the video. as a native new yorker, i truly and viscerally got the feel of the rhythm and the heart of paris from this......guess i have to go there now.......
In this era of jerky, lo-res, awful-sounding youtube video, this is great! I really appreciate you taking the time to post this, since I'll be in Paris in 4 months. Regards!
Merci, I wish Paris was my home, your tour was grand, very good camera scenery, trey charmant
What a nice video, love it, thank you.
I covered quite a bit of Paris....didn't make it to Montmartre...I enjoyed but don't think I'd have appreciated all the stairways...you were able to embrace the atmosphere and charm beautifully..thank you.

I like all of Paris, but Montmartre and the Latin Quarter are especially nice because they "look the way Paris is supposed to look."

Excellent video, thank you!
Montmarte seems fascinating... How is that every building in Paris is so elegantly designed? From the museum to the simple residences, every building seems to have character..
Thank you for sharing this video
Superb. Thank you.
I miss the brick streets in Wisconsin they were beautiful and never a pot hole now they are all paved and full of pot holes. Paris is beautiful I wish I could visit.
Super video. Really captures Montmartre.
me encanto, muchas gracias.....buenisimo......
Great walk thru Paris. Thanks
thanky ou for this beautiful film, never seen such a nice film about montmartre
Bonne continuation. Bien à vous.
Wonderful....love your videos!
Brings back some wonderful memories! Cheers!
this was really relaxing to watch.
Loving this tour! Just visited Sacre-Coeur and hiked the tower this past May. I'd much rather see and feel this village over a stroll at Vendome or Champs-Elysees!
Amazing video. I love all your videos!!!!!
Me encanto el video, muchas gracias.
this is a fantastic video. thanks for making
Statistically it rains every other day, although in fact it's more like several days cloudy and rainy, several sunny, then several rainy again, etc. Overcast days are not unusual. It's a temperature climate that changes at lot depending on whether the wind is blowing from the north or south. The overcast days are usually very light overcasts so they are still very bright.
