Montane Cheviot Goat | Winter Ultra Run | 4K | December 2022

A winter ultra run, taking place in the Northumberland National Park around the Cheviot Hills. Hosted by Cold Brew Events in partnership with Montane
“This route will take you out into one of the last wild places in England where the population count per square mile is the lowest to be had. High up in the fells you’ll need to battle your inner self as you cross peat covered hills, descend grassy banks and chug along the mighty border ridge with Scotland on one side and England on the other.”

It was really tough, took a lot to get around. I totally messed up with my nutrition and probably had under 600 calories (Cheryl similar but handled it better) for the whole 59 miles and just under 19hrs of running. It’s not enough!! We’ll give it another go next year and hopefully do a little better. It is a great route but never seems so at the time! Thank you 😊

Great video and achievement. Well done both of you. We had a brief "no" moment when you cut to your after race debrief so were very glad to hear you had finished. Best bit has to be Gary's face when Cheryl says she'll do this event again. Brilliant!

Fantastic honest video, loved the Cheviot summit photos, as I sit here with a slipped disc for more weeks than I want! Watching your efforts is a great motivator to get sorted ASAP . Poles are great, I find them really useful on the Dartmoor and Exmoor bogs 😂 you get into the plant and leap mode😊 Nice to hear Cheryl commenting on the way off Cheviot, we usually don’t hear or see a lot of her. You make a great team, lovely to see you kept and got round together😊 what is they they say “ what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” Well done both again, you did it 👍👍nice to see you with the tee 👍👍

Thank you very much Ian, love your comments. Sorry to hear of your current slipped disc, hope that eases soon and you can get back to what you love sooner rather than later. Poles - brilliant aren't they? We bought them on a whim really. Saw lots of ultra runners using them and thought it was worth a shot. They've helped so much on ascents and surprisingly on technical descent but bog hopping is certainly another use. Without them I think we would have been in more than we were!! Cheryl is more camera shy than me but as I keep telling her she did a great job. I'm going to ensure she does her bit for the future as it adds a better mix. I certainly hope it makes us stronger. We'll be thinking of that during Lakeland 100 next year and as we mentioned will do it again next December. Thanks again and best wishes for a great Christmas!

Guys that looked brutal. Still a good time considering. You may not think it but the training you’ve put in did pay off. Nutrition is a tough one to get right especially in the cold. Be interested in seeing what you did nutrition wise and hear where you went wrong on that front. Fantastic though don’t be too hard on yourselves. 👍🏻

  • @TrailRunningCouple

Thanks Simon. I’ve never been great with eating and running. Before the run I had a couple of porridge pots and a bacon roll. From then it was around 4hrs until I had a small chia bar. At the first aid station I had a small cup of soup and half a bread roll. The rest of my food consisted of a mountain fuel flapjack , half of a snickers bar and a gel. Clearly it’s not enough. I do know what I need to do though but never follow my own advice. I leave it too long before eating and then it’s too late and I struggle to swallow food. Ideally I should be eating something small every 30 mins (jelly babies for example) and something more wholesome on the hour….

Thanks very much. We’re pretty lucky that we’ve not picked up anything serious. We’ve had the odd niggle and maybe taken a week off at times but more often than not we’ve chosen to run though the niggle and they seem to right themselves. Strategy wise, we just keep going. We aim to run two 10 milers in the week and a long run of 20+ miles at weekend. We’ve done that for a few years now. So that’s around 40 miles and sometimes over that per week. Obviously if something longer is coming up then the weekly long run becomes longer or we’ll run both Saturday and Sunday. Thanks for your comments, they’re always appreciated 👍
