Montana Rail Link Vol. 2, The West End - Updated FULL VIDEO (2016)

Ойын-сауық

In this 2016 C. Vision release, we cover MRL's 3rd, 4th, 9th, and 10th Subdivisions, comprising the railroad's west end lines. This territory includes MRL's mainline between Helena, Montana and Sandpoint, Idaho, along with the Evaro Hill route between DeSmet and Paradise, and the Darby branch south of Missoula. The steep grades of Mullan Pass and Evaro Hill are featured in this program, along with extensive coverage of the Gas Local between Missoula and Thompson Falls, Montana. Before the job was eliminated, MRL's Paradise Local was seen in operation with pairs of the railroad's classic GP9s. MRL's 20-cylinder SD45s make plenty of appearances in this video as well, along with many scenes of the railroad's SD70ACe and SD40-2XR locomotives. MRL 290, the only SDP40 on the roster, was captured leading trains on the 3rd and 10th Subdivisions. This video was updated and re-edited in October of 2021, and is the sequel to our Montana Rail Link SD45 Renaissance video. Footage captured during 2013, 2014, and 2015.

When I was last there in 2019, the searchlights at the 8:47 mark already had their willing "darth vader" replacement signals standing next to them. First the semaphores, and now the searchlights. Those were the primary reasons I visited the MRL. (well that, and the plethora of EMD power on the property.)

We missed the semaphore era on MRL, unfortunately. But it was great to see those classic searchlights in operation for so many years. There are still some hanging on, but it's only a matter of time... PTC and continued signal replacement is the future for the MRL mainline. Thank you for the comment!

Lots and lots of AC horsepower for those coal trains! Back in the days of DC power, those trains required multiple helper sets to reach the top of Mullan Pass. The "black fog of Blossburg" was very real in those days. Thank you for the comment!

    C. Vision you all did a wonderful job with this MRL video. My only regret is I did not watch it sooner. Please keep up the amazing content. Also the local at around the 25 minute mark as they were picking up the three cars, that was quite a connection. I’d have been a little more than upset after I picked myself up off the cab floor on that one.

My grandfather was a conductor on the NP and BN; dad was born and raised in Missoula. These were his home rails. Dad told stories about riding in the caboose with his brothers-they’d bring their poles and get dropped off to fish while their dad worked the local, then get picked up a few hours later on the way back. Unfortunately I never (meaningfully) met my grandfather or really any of his family. Dad joined the Navy; when he retired we settled in the South where mom is from.
