This is a very special video to me. I use to live Between Garrison and Avon Montana in the mountains. This was like seeing "home". Always was amazed by how long the coal trains were that headed to Helena and all the Engines that were on them to get up over the pass. Thank you SO MUCH for this fantastic production and for what it mean to me personally to get to see this area again. Age and health had caused me to move to the south east of the country and where I'm at here in the NE corner of Tennessee, there aren't even any rails closer than an hour away from me. I miss hearing the trains.

Well hey thanks again for your comment! I'm glad this could bring you back to "home!" That is too bad you aren't close to any rails anymore but it's great you have KZread at your fingertips to watch and endless number of videos that everyone here has to offer.

was in this area mid-June 2021 -just have a simple camera, unable to produce such imagines -mostly just stand along the tracks and enjoy the moments of passing trains with their roaring sound -very happy there are people like you that let me relive those moments with such perfect videos -thank you, excellent work

Wow! Just discovered this. With the imminent dissolvent of my beloved MRL I have been binge watching everything I can find on U Tube of MRL running west of Helena , MT. About to build a trip out there to see the helpers for myself . I have modeled MRL on O-Gauge here at home in Kansas. Our Lionel pre orders are about to arrive #4407 & #4404 Veterans and Essential workers engines. Thank you for this . Just needed a little push to pull the trigger on a trip that needs to happen . What a great railroad . Your video is phenomenal!

Thanks a lot I appreciate it! If you scroll down my channel a bit you will find a MRL playlist of all of my videos I have uploaded of my time there. I just also recently took another trip there and am currently working on those videos which are a real treat because it was almost all action caught in the snow! I will be uploading those over the next couple of months. It is definitely worth the visit! You won't regret it.

Thank you for documenting these trains on the Montana Rail Link in the Mullen Pass area, Dan! The trains were magnificent to watch traveling through the area. The BNSF grain train had eight engines powering it! Seeing the grain train going around Iron Ridge Horseshoe curve and coming out on the left side of the screen was magnificent to see on my 32" computer monitor! It was interesting to see the snow flurries you ran into in the Continental Divide area on 2 April 2022. But running into snow flurries in the high Rocky Mountains in early April is nothing unusual. I have distant relatives living in Colorado Springs, Colorado and a couple of weeks ago they were posting snow on the ground in early April. Do we have any more videos of the Montana Rail Link coming? I sure hope so!

Thank you Thomas! Yes indeed the weather was all over the place during the two days there. I was lucky there wasn't more rain. I really didn't miss out on more than a couple shots because it was raining a little too much to fly. There will be one more shorter video from this trip and then I am taking one more much longer trip back out there the whole week of the 22nd of this month to capture as much MRL action as I can. Hoping to get all the local trains and more scenic locations. Hopefully I'll have a whole handful of videos to work on and post here from that trip.

This video is historic because BNSF has purchased the Montana Rail Link, because it needs an alternate route across Montana. Beautiful, well planned video from Railfan Dan. I have spent time in the Mullan Pass area chasing MRL trains. I think MRL's Logo and Paint Scheme is perfect and superior to BNSF's 'Pumpkins.' The deal cost BNSF a large chunk of money to get it back into their system. Details are online.

Another great video...love the snow it was an extra treat! I have a question I have always wondered about, I've always loved trains but don't too much about the mechanics of them, can you tell me how the power is allocated between all of the engines? How do they push or pull with just the right amount of power?

  • @TheRailfanDan

Most modern locomotives are 4400 horsepower and the ratio of how many engines to have for how many cars on a given route and where to place them in the train (middle or rear units) is all calculated by some system on the railroad.

I wonder what will happen to all the Montana Rail Link locomotives once BNSF retakes control of those tracks, whether they will be leased from BNSF or purchased directly by BNSF.
