Yay, Monster Party! This was great Derek, probably the most complete video on Monster Party. When I made my episode, the prototype wasn't available yet, so it's cool to see the differences. I put this game in the same category as Conquest of the Crystal Palace: Somewhat mediocre, but so quirky & charming. Love it. Also, I accept your apology.

NetConsole Basically, Norm likes the NES game, Conquest of the Crystal Palace. And Derek doesn't seem to enjoy it as much, writing it off as mediocre, hence the apology to him.
You know it's a badass game when the first enemy you see is Josuke Higashikata.

I've noticed that you have a very positive and friendly aura. One of the reasons Ive always watched your videos.
I actually think the lack of percussion for the music adds to the ethereal tone. It gives playing through the game a sense of purgatory. Not sure from gameplay experience, but that's what it seems from looking at it though.
Man I had this cart as a kid. Such an insane, difficult, but really charming experience. I never knew it was originally "parody world" and tbh I'm so glad they changed it, because that gave it that weird charm that makes it so memorable for me. Thanks for the video.

I also had this cart as a kid. Don't think I ever got past the 3rd level.
Oh...the memories I have of renting Monster Party quite possibly 10-15x from the local video store, and my dad finally realizing that he's already paid more than the game was worth and ultimately just buying it for me. At that point, I probably beat it 20x, but I still couldn't stop playing it. Seriously, an underrated game
12:24 Wait, is that Pants?is tha motherfucking starch pants walking around like J Edger hoover on a tuesday afternoon?
I’ve got to say, I’ve been binging a bunch of your older videos lately (both SSFF and HVGN) and outside of the fact that they’re all great videos, you’re one of the best at doing music montages.
You do an awesome job giving the spot light on weird and esoteric games. Keep up the good work!
So happy to see you back Derek! Fucking love the new intro , keep it up man
YES!!!!!!!! I friggin' LOVE Monster Party. Great review Derek!
I like the direction your content has taken. Good to see your own identity on your reviews. Thanks for the great vid
1:54 Quote from JonTron: Then they FUSED together!! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!
Great stuff Derek! Plenty of people have taken a superficial look at MP, but it's great to see you're passion for minutiae on display. Keep it up man!
Count me in among those that enjoy the content you put out, Happy Video Game Nerd wine-drinking, or the chillaxed reviewer format. I do really like the Stop Skeletons production values, the intro and the more casual attire and camera set-up. I'm looking forward to what you've got coming next! :)
I'm happy to see you back! I like the rebranding and style, and look forward to more! :)
Woah, a new review! Awesome! I remember wanting to send you Gotcha Force because it was a cool game and I really wanted you to review it. Maybe because, I dunno, your videos are great! You've introduced me to so many gems, and if it weren't for you, I wouldn't have played such classic beauties.

Stop Skeletons From Fighting Is Gotcha Force really expensive? Because where I live, the most it has ever gone as far as prices go, was £5 (roughly, $7.50).

Stop Skeletons From Fighting Gamecube emulation is pretty lightweight. Laptops run it slow but computers are very capable. You should get the Dolphin emulator ^_^

Awesome game and review. Started playing Monster Party tonight after I saw this view. Never knew what I was missing. Thanks again!
Derek you are by far my favorite script reviewer! Awesome stuff here bro
Great review Derek!!!! Felt like your older reviews love your explanations and personal feelings about the games. Thank you!!!!
I think a lot of us miss your old nes reviews. your reviews are great no matter what. it could be hard to review more since there isn't a whole mess load of nes games to review that are great. sword master, kickmaster, shatterhand, kabuki, guardian legend, vice project doom, the battle of olymbis, astyanax, crystalis, faxanadu, and some really expensive ones like little samson, panic restaurant, coccoron(famicon repro nes cart), mr gimmic(never released here), moon crystal (famicon nes repro) and uforia(never realeased here). I'd love to see your take on these games since all these are good and most here are great.
Great video! Thanks for going the extra distance to dig up all that information on it, that's what sets your videos apart in my opinion.
I appreciate how in depth this review is, splendid work.
One of video games greatest mysteries is who said 'prepare to qualify' in the original Pole Position.
My brothers were 10 years older than me and one of their friends stole their NES collection when I was around 6. When I saw the title screen and then Bert in this video I was amazed that this game wasn't a dream.

Man, that Friday The 13th cabin music can be used for ANYTHING and work perfectly. haha Another killer video brother, thank you!
Oh golly, a nice complimenting review of one of my favorite NES games! 5:24 nice slip in of an Uninvited track there. :b
This was great, your style regardless of name remains in your work. I still love it, plus it doesn't have that gimmick of living in AVGN's shadow anymore. But seriously, I'm waiting on your review of Uninvited, Deja Vu, and Shadowgate on the NES. The Kemco series of MacVenture games. I fucking love those games.
Awesome review! You get better with every video
...Y'know something? I've been subscribed to this guy for a long while now, but only once have one of his new videos graced my subscription screen. What a great system we have here at KZread. Anyhow, it seems like I've got some catching up to do!
btw probably really dumb of Bandai to not release this in Japan. I bet this would have been an instant classic there and sold pretty well. Heck, the franchise could be alive and well today if the Japanese properly got their hands on it.

I miss your reviews brother.. watching you gush over old games makes me gush bout you gushing about old games :) I tried this game but might go past level 1 thanks to you!
I used to rent this from the neighborhood video store in the late 80s & still rented it till the early 90s. I couldn't ever find a copy for sale as a kid. A lot of memories playing this taking turns with my brothers.
I like that you point out the English version's greatness was largely accidental, and was not planned to be that way by the devs. I think that's often how great works come into existence - it's hard to make them on purpose. Great video.
Great review as always Derek. I freaking love Monster Party! My go to game for people who think that older games are all the same
Nice to See Kabuki Quantum Fighter get a shout out. I remember messaging you back when you were on the Gametrailers video forums asking if you heard of it. Still waiting on the review
I watch this every year or so just to keep myself level. What a weird and interesting game. Great job.
Glad you came back:-)
Monster Party is proudly in my collection! :)
Glad to have you back, Derek! Keep knockin' em dead!
As much as I miss seeing this under HVGN, this new you with Stop Skeletons from Fighting totally works for you Derek! Happy to see you push out more reviews! :) I remember picking up Monster Party before it got more well known (particularly by JonTron), and I just loved how strange the game was, and of course despite its gameplay flaws, I found it an enjoyable experience and a good game to triumph its challenge! I have to say I absolutely love the how indepthful you went into the history, especially since the prototype has been released, and using good sources like GDRI and of course the composer relation with Masaki Hashimoto was wonderful to hear! I find the music of Monster Party to be totally unique to this, outside of it, yeah it may not hold up, but some tracks are still great to listen too! Keep up the great work Derek! ;D
Monster Party Parody the official Japanese release is now available at Etsy guys!
Just beat this tonight and truly enjoyed it!
I remember owning this game. Man, I had forgotten about it until now. Thanks for the review!
Easily your best work under the new umbrella. If this is any example of the quality that can be expected of Derek Alexander from here on out, then I very much look forward to tuning in.
Oh hellz yeah, gots to get my Derek on! Seriously, you're really good at this, I've always liked your videos a lot, you're a very charming dude.
Great overview of the game! I am going to have to fire this up sometime soon.
Great review!
The ending cutscenes of Monster Party are still some of the most surreal and insane things I've seen in an NES game, or perhaps even games in general.

Lamsaturn it doesn't make any sense when you think about it but it gave me chills up my spine!
I was wondering when Derick would do this, the moment i knew about this game it just screamed for him to review it. awesome video.
I think the plant boss is supposed to be from the little shop of horrors. This is one of my favorite games on the NES.
I don't know what you're talking about... I absolutely LOVE this soundtrack!
Wow, I remember this game. Great review!
Great review! This game is quite unique and odd. I'll have to check it out!
Yaaaay! Derek is officially back!
I thinks you put the skills way up high for the other youtubeur who just talk about game. You simply took it to another level. Derek, you're the best !
Finally! Feels like ages since you made an NES review lol
This game is one of only 3 that I got with my NES as a kid, the other two being SMB 1 and SMB 3. It not only blew my mind back then, but also helped hone my skills. It took me a full two years to beat! (I 6 when I got my NES and 8 when I beat Monster Party.)
I loved this game and I think I still have it. Found it and a bunch of NES games someone abandoned in front of a video store.
Great retrospective
Loved the review also i have a chance to pick this up hopefully in a craigslist deal wish me luck
Excellent video
wow. very in depth n excellently written
Awesome video - dude, this transfer over to SSFF -- it's good. Very good! :)
Monster Party was my second NES game and over the years I got incredible good at it, I had all the boss patterns memorized and I could beat most bosses with Mark or Bert. Never underestimate the power of a bored 9 year old with a lot of time on his hands.
I still really don't get the title Stop Skeletons From Fighting but your quality is consistent. Good work!
The Shadowgate soundtrack is so good, went real well with the video.
Disappointed you didn't show the messed up ending. Happy to see that the comment I made on your video, Buy Pants - They're Practical, is still represented =w=
great review :) looks like a crazy game
You and Norman make me get emotional with your videos
when we were freakin FIVE YEARS old, I remember I went out with my grandma and my friend and his mom and little brother. we ended end each leaving with an NES game. Probably at budget prices no doubt haha. I ended up with Circus Caper and my friend got Monster Party. we played through this first level and I'll never forget the bizarre stuff you've displayed in the review. thanks for the vid. a great review for a game that holds great memories
Awesome review. I was really into this game as a kid. I remember the ending was creepy as hell.
I like its weirdness. Unusual enemy variety like this makes me want to perform a quirkafleeg.
Looove that intro
Heyyyyyyyyyyyy 300K 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Monster Party is one of my all-time favorite video games. I used to think I wasn't any good at video games and had trouble clearing any of them until I played this one. It resonated with me for some reason and playing through it was a blast. I have to disagree about the gameplay and soundtrack but it may just be my nostalgia talking. Side note, the next game I cleared was Kickle Cubicle. /Shrug
keep it up, i love your videos !!
I used to have this game when I was a kid, I really dug the cover. Good review.
Digging the shit out of that new intro!
I think the idea still stands in both versions. Even if many of the copyrighted material is gone, MP still has plenty of well known monsters and ideas from various regions much like Castlevania from the beginning, and many simple, original ideas we could get, such as an innocent cat becoming a monstrous nightmare or the Halloween pumpkin ghost. In fact, very little are outlandish, and really, the change to the spirit of things is still intact, as I got all this even before the prototype. Monster Party is still about putting a kid up against his and other kid's own dreams and nightmares. As for the text, I found both to be equally mysterious, but for the most part, the US version has childish dialog which is usually just a statement showing off a personality or physical trait, and/or simply a pre battle cry or taunt ("face the music", which is just a straightforward battle taunt versus the stranger Japanese version's), something I found easy to get as a kid. The prototype translated, on the other hand, has some of its own randomness like that, here and there, and will only give minor hints without holding your hand, which would have even oblivious Japanese kids think, and to me, this is itself pretty mysterious in its own right. It's pretty clever many of the times, though not always. Both versions have their weak and strong points. The ending in Japan hints at a much more psychological ending BTW, with Varyuu (Bert's Japanese name, meaning Value in English I believe) instead saying what he said at the beginning to you before taking you to the "Dark World", which is "alright, let's get going!". While the US version gives us some weird relief that it happened some way or another, the original Japanese version hints at the main character being somewhat mental in the head or something, as if none of it happened at all.
I remember renting this as a child and really liking it. Was surprised when I found out that many didn't enjoy it.
This is a much better channel name and intro. It's so goofy how James Rolfe's stupid, rabid fanboys made retro game channels do stupid things. I like AVGN but his fanboys were fucking lame.

Derek is back with a great review only like he could make !
I literally watched this again to look at Dereck's adorable hair cut lol
:18 I just noticed what this is a reference too. It's a reference to Kafka's The Metamorphoses.
Yeah, deutsches T-Shirt xDDD I'm very happy to see a new review....and it still felt like the good old days :)
The 80's were such a magical time for video games.
An amazingly fun and challenging game.
I love Monster Party.
great episode I played that for a while after seen the review in "Weird Video Games" Also Gaijin Goomba did a review to explain some of these monsters Is weird how a weird video game has become quite popular lately
@kishoroguy7614
9 жыл бұрын
Slayerthecrow Not necessarily! It depends on how many people talk about a certain title. Because the more people talk about it, the more popular it will become (either through fame or infamy). Look at Earthbound! That game is one of the more beloved snes RPGs on the system and that game is one of the weirdest game to be ever released. But due to how devoted that fan base was, and still is (mainly thanks to Starmen.net and Chuggaaconroy, to a certain extent). Honestly, I prefer weirder games.
@TheClaybones
9 жыл бұрын
Slayerthecrow To be fair it's been fodder for the internet for quite a while now.
I thought the dogs with human heads were a reference to the Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
That new intro is fucking rad.
I had to look up what that shirt's all about and it's a bit weird. It's from a Japanese franchise, "Control Bear", and their website describes it as: "By creating an image that is so unexpected and unusual - a cute, innocent bear taking off his own head - the artist communicates his message: you control everything, be strong willed and don’t be controlled by others or just follow what others expect you to do." So it's a bear in control, fully in charge of its own life. The shirt Derek's wearing however has an imperative on it: "(you, go) control bears". The bear's got no agency whatsoever, reversing the message the creator had in mind! I'm assuming this is because whoever translated it messed up by trusting the software they were using blindly and not some clever message about the German state taking away people's freedoms or something...
I like the new intro!
I don't think I ever beaten the first level of that game as a kid.
