Monster Monday: Hags

Ойын-сауық

Welcome back to another Monster Monday: A series where I'll be drawing a monster from Dungeons and Dragons while I talk about it's lore, history in the real world and what they're like to use as a DM or fight as a player.
In this video, I talk about Hags; The wicked witches of the wilds!

To this day, I don't think there's a monster I enjoy roleplaying more as than hags. They're all just so delightfully creepy, cruel, and irreverent, and they just do not care about anything other than themselves. I've wrecked many a headstrong fool's ego with a few lewd words and a suggestively sinister sneer. Very well done :)

I love Hags. They will be quite important in my upcoming homebrew game. In that, they are the leaders of the Ban Sidhe, the Court of Darkness... basically evil Fay. They were (they would say) promised great reward following the mythical war in Heaven (The War of the Breaking Arch) which was reneged upon by the King of Summer. They can be found in the dark and dank corners of the Feywilde and the Prime Material, where they plot and scheme to turn all the wild places into rotten shells of themselves in vengeance. They don't necessarily have a direct connection to Demons, but many have turned to Gehenna and the Princes for power - these are often more powerful and nihilistic, if that last is even possible. Any hag can also be the unseen sponsor of a Fay Warlock themselves: plenty of plot hooks for those guys to deal with! They are the creators and controllers of trolls (Homebrew! Don't hit me!) and often things like Goblins and Hobgoblins (again - don't punch me!) because I wanted to have my world have a more Slavic/Celtic feel - in this area at least - than the LotR-style armies of HobGobs industriously creating huge armoured and disciplined armies. Some Hobgoblins do form their own militaristic nations, and some goblins aren't even what we could consider conventionally evil, but those that work for the Hags - knowingly or unknowingly - have their will and fate suborned to the will of the Hags. They are mysterious puppet masters, and if you meet a Coven, you're probably either completely boned, or you're going to save quite a large part of the world from decay and desolation, depending on how you roll. Obviously, I will beef a few of them up to be suitably powerful. But, ultimately, they are about creeping corruption, all unseen, than they are about just straight-up murderising everyone. The idea was that I wanted a 'thing' going on in the background - a dying forest, failing crops, that sort of thing - that eventually becomes something that the players can't ignore. Knowing my luck they'll scoot off to investigate at level one, though... A marvellous enemy. Last time I used them, my players underestimated them wildly, to their great cost. I love their classic look, and this is an amazing piece, and a superb walkthrough of an amazing monster! Cheers!

Hags present a very unique style of encounter that is difficult to work into other creatures: the sort of "deal with the devil" moment where the party confronts the hag not to kill it, but because they need something from it. The best part is that it doesn't really matter all that much what the party's level is in such an encounter, more powerful or less powerful, it's still an unsettling negotiation where the hag holds all the cards.

I ran a Night Hag as the villain of the first 5 levels of my campaign. The heroes chased her to her fortress in hades where they eventually killed her, only to find the Mayor's daughter squirming in the hags belly. My rogue got to practice her c section skills.

Honestly if I run Hags I'm just gonna pick and choose my favorite qualities from each version to really make a unique enemy. Each one has really cool abilities and I don't wanna pick just one. And I'll probably heavily base them on the Three Sisters from Macbeth.

Amazing video! Being sick on Mondays sucks but at least it’s made more bearable with amazing vids like this! Also I really love the new ending theme your videos have. Maybe add the Pegasus and the Nightmare to the list? I think that would be pretty neat :3 There’s some horrific lore to how Nightmares are made as well..

These are one of my favorite creatures, in a "love to hate them" sort of way. I like that you can give them a sick sense of humor and play them for laughs... right until they decide to tear your throat out.

It would be interesting to see an interaction between a dragon and a hag, specifically a Black Dragon considering the two live in the same environment.

I wonder if Hags employ Awakened Shrubs to bring them stuff like berries and twigs for their spells? I also had a character named Dune that was a witch hunter. He and a hag named Jenna Crane had a long standing rivalry with her eventually making a pact with Dune's daughter Emma some 15 years after Dune and his party stopped adventuring. I don't remember messing with any Awakened Shrubs during that time, but maybe they were on break

It’s always nice to see another video on fey creatures, a while ago I was writing an anthology story based off of D&D’s interpretations of them, oh and I am totally going to find a way to incorporate that knitting circle joke at the end into my home game, maybe I could flavor the dusk hags prophecies as gossip. Would it be possible to do a video on meenlocks?

As always exceptional video; I am most enthusiastics for my mondays these days funnily enough just to hear your jolly voice and watch another fantastic unique design of whatever creature it may be, something known or unknown always a pleasure to view. I just wanted to state that my drought of writting has subsidded and of recent have been inspired once again to get on the horse and persure my dreams, I would love to account you and this wonderful community for a portion of this push so thank you very much, I am honestly extremly grateful for all that you and the people do. Once I mostly complete my book I'd love If you'd humble me by accepting a draft copy without art and giving it a geese I'm quite overwhelmed even at the though. I know It will take time and money for me to complete this ongoing project but I am gonna push towards this future no matter how long it takes and when it comes I'd be grateful for your opinion and potentially ability to select your favourite concept maybe worthy of an art piece. As always yours sincerly Jacob

Well, congratulations, you've made me want to play as a warlock with a pact with a hag now. Maybe with one of his eyes cut out and replaced with a "hag eye", allowing his patron to see what he sees... and have him shoot eldritch blasts from that eye, just for some cool flavoring on it, why not. It's a little hard to pick a pact boon with them, though, since none of the pacts feel really... "haggy" to me.

You could always have an animal as a minion familiar, or "Grandmas Notebook" a scrap book full of secrets and crude jokes, I like the eye deal alot though

@@olivermeloche2042 The problem I have with pact of the chain for this is that for most warlocks their familiar is kind of meant to be the eyes and ears of their patron. Something already covered by the... you know... eye. That tome idea could work though, "Granny's book of secrets" kinda thing. That does give me some more ideas, but the character that springs to mind might just be too dark and damaged for most parties. Good NPC material though.
