Monster Monday: False Hydra

Ойын-сауық

Welcome back to another Monster Monday: A series where I'll be drawing a monster from Dungeons and Dragons while I talk about it's lore, history in the real world and what they're like to use as a DM or fight as a player.
In this video, I talk about False Hydras; the memory devouring nightmare creatures that grow out of the floor!

    One of my ways i plan to run this is even as the DM "forget" about things as well. Since it invariably creates a 4th wall break and metagaming, it's fun to use it to play that metagame too. "Why do you guys keep mentioning his wife? I never said he had a wife." "Yes you did!" "I really don't think i did." But then have the NPC in question ask the party if they're the ones who pulled some prank by putting women's clothes in his closet while he was at work so they know something is definirely going on

    I love how different this creature is than nearly every single creature in D&D. Rather than directly attacking a town, it slowly picks people off. Its terrifying how you, the player knows its there, but the characters themselves are completely oblivious and have no idea what lies. For sure one of my new favorites

    I love this abomination. It's just so psychologically damaging if played right. My only issue is that my players tend to be more drawn to things it can fight more than a roleplay challenge, so this creature definitely needs to have the right group to run it.

    That's why it's great for my group. They like to fight, but they'd rather learn things about the world more than anything. The false hydra taking that away from them, or people they know, it'll kill them.

    I read someone let players make save rolls mid combat to resist the song but it was a near constant thing so long as one head could sing, and the goal was to create a situation where the hydra could single out one player, while for about 1-2 turns the rest of the party momentarily forget why they’re there and cannot see the hydra or the one player grappling with the invisible force, this creates tense moments of single combat where that one player must fight for their life until the party can rejoin.

    When I used this monster, I had the players travel to the city by horseback. Once the players arrived some spooky shenanigans occured, but halfway through the day they arrived they realise that they haven't seen a single farm animal in or outside of the city. I underscore that this is extremely wierd as they've seen fences, pens and other animal clues. Suddenly one of them goes "There aren't any animals in this city. Do you think our horses are okay?" to which I reply "What horses? You guys travelled in on foot. Don't you remember?" and the party is like "Uhh no, we definently had horses". I make them do a intelligence saving throw at a high DC. Those that failed suddenly were convinced that they had NOT traveled on horses, the others remember having used horses clearly. Some really funny arguments insued with both sides of the saving throw accusing the others of being insane or idiotic or even just taking the piss on them. I remember the barbarian who somehow succeeded the saving throw yelling at the poor ranger who failed it, demanding to know whether he was screwing with him or not and NOT believing him AT ALL.

  • @steveharrison76
    @steveharrison763 жыл бұрын

    Oho! I've got one of these in my next campaign all lined up. The party will have sat for a portrait at the 'wayfarer's guild' (a placeholder name for a union of government-sponsored adventurers: the adventures take place a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting, and the city they start in is beginning to send parties out to explore and reclaim what was lost). Shortly afterwards will be asked to investigate some disappearances in a slum area. Shenanigans ensue. Victory is hard-won. Loot abounds. Mysteries are solved. They will find a pack with a few bits of adventuring equipment and a spell book as they go through, along with a torn blue cloak amongst the loot. Anyway, at the end of all of this, they will go back to the hall to view their painting and find a party member in the portrait (currently a Gnome Illusionist) that they don't remember because they were 'got' by the beastie... the gnome in the portrait is wearing a blue cloak and clutching a wand and spell book... I suppose that this could be described as 'gaslighting' in a way, but it's all for drama and fun's sake, and I'll absolutely break character if any of the players themselves have a bad time - I'm going to gradually forget what they are doing there and the players will have to stay on target in the real world too, insisting that they want to go here and there whilst I have a whale of a time pretending to not know why they are wasting valuable session time. (The quest-line will start with me asking them to trust me, and that things might get a little weird.) Basically, I want to try and recreate the 'experience' of the reality of these creatures in the game experience itself. Not only will people in the area where the monster dwells know nothing about any disappearances (apart from one deaf beggar who is thought of as completely mad) whilst the officials in the city, further away insist that a large number of people have disappeared, but they'll have to deal with a DM who gradually insists that nothing is going on in that area and vocally wondering what the hell they are wasting everyone's time for. The players can't see anything until they deafen themselves, and I want to challenge their tactics. It's a risky play, but if my players trust me and avoid the temptation to metagame, it should be a lot of fun for all of us. In a way, the actual stat-block and all the rest isn't the real draw for me; it's the grotesque effects it has on people. I liked the idea of a 'player' being eliminated from the group's memory. Like I say, if anyone gets genuinely disturbed or angry about this I'll absolutely do everything I can to reassure them that nothing is wrong and I'm trying to unsettle everyone for drama's sake - I think I know my friends well enough and I'm confident that this will be an experience that they will remember (unlike their characters, I suppose...). I'm not entirely sure this idea is original to me; I think I read about people who have used this creature and cobbled this together from some of those. Still - I'm looking forward to it! Also - nice joke at the beginning; for a few seconds I genuinely thought I'd skipped the video! The piece you've drawn is absolutely grotesque and - genuinely - I think it's my favourite portrayal of one of these foul things. Stunning stuff! Sorry for the essay!

    This time I would like to suggest a Fomorian, they hold a special place in my heart because one of my first villains was one, but true to form my players derailed the campaign so badly that she got away scot-free and never even met the party. I personally like the idea of their appearance changing by their alignment; perhaps you could do something similar to Two-Face where one side is ugly and evil and the other half good and beautiful (I have always been curious about what they might have looked like before they became corrupted) PS: that is a delightfully gruesome look, in my world, False Hydras are what happens when you put an undead through Ceremorphasis (God forbid if it's a lich) the physiology of the dead yet moving is just not compatible for the tadpole. Thus alongside neothilds and brain stealer dragons, they are also a terrible taboo among Mindflayers. They also gain more heads by devouring unsuspecting people and then absorbing the corpses into their or should I say ”it's” biomass.

    I adore the idea of players struggling to communicate to their own characters, having to come up with ways to remind their other half that a flesh-eating monstrosity may be looming right before them. I don't think it was mentioned in this video, but I'm also fond of an possible weakness of the beast being a visibilty in mirrors. I think this is especially fun if you've featured reflections or other mirror based monsters or beings trapped or communicating through mirrors, as the gaunt face behind them in a mirror might first be taken for something within the mirror itself, another possible veil of confusion. I intend to use the False Hydra for my party, and will begin seeding clues with the joining of a new player (he should be joining with the next sesion, though we play irregularly). Using the forgotten party member strategy will also let me to get away with giving the party extra temporary healing items in their early levels (party only has a paladin for healing). I've already got a haunted rogue that uses a mirror to commune with spirits and a pre-paranoid bloodhunter, who'll be excellent for dropping clues to!

Also excellent art! You can really see the horror in it eyes and also the one mysterious eye in the middle is nice touch! 👍 Ps also if you do dragon december this year could you do pink dragon from dragon magazine 156? I know it technically an April fool's joke but I think it really cool and I love that it breath attack is bubbles! Sprang one of these on my party. Had a druid that was an orphan with no siblings, so I rolled the campaign for about 4 quests without throwing a single locked door or chest (the party had no rouges), with a couple of missing treasure items. Just before we went on Christmas break, the "orphan" player found a bag that matched his, had some thieves tools in it and correspondence between the rogue and his father implicating that they were the orphan's family. I had punched up about 8 different letters detailing that the rogue had been with them on all the adventure. Then as all their minds were blown, I said "And that's where we'll pick up in two weeks." My table lost their minds. When we got back to it they tracked it down and battled it. Definite highlight of the campaign when I got them teared up for 2 NPCs that they had never met that died offscreen. Wish I would have had your excellent drawing to creep them out even more. Great job.

    Love this fleshy aberrations monsters. May I suggest Nyarlathotep? I know he has no direct portrait in D&D since it was created by HP Lovecraft but I have seen some homebrew iterations of Nyarlathotep.

    Wouldn't call GM Binder version "most canon" per say, mostly because I don't feel like the statblock fully reflexts nature of creature. (I think this one can't be really be portrayed without at least two statblocks, one(or more) for 1-6 head version and one for 7 head "mature" version. Since they are fundamentally really different monsters, the adoslecent version isn't really physically strong by itself while full mature version has so massive size that even with it relying on domination you'd think it'd still chomp down hard)

    What level would you say a party needs to be to handle a false hydra fairly?

  • @ArcaneForge

    @ArcaneForge

    3 жыл бұрын

    It's a tough call. It kind of depends on what rolls your players fulfil, how many are in the party and if they're balanced or even if they have magic items. I would say that a group of 5 or so players could probably defeat this creature if they were level 11 or so? What do you think?

    Anyone else notice how male artists tend to draw "unknowable aberrations" as something vaguely resembling genitalia? No shade. It's a marvelous artwork. I just wonder if anyone else has noticed this phenomenon.

  • @ArcaneForge

    @ArcaneForge

    Hey Trivial. Thanks so much! I think you're totally right. I can't speak for all male artists, but I think our visual understanding of aberrations comes from artists like HR Geiger, the silent hill games and so on. There's a lot of our visual language for these weird things that have roots in psycho-sexual horror art. Definitely worth thinking about!
