A lance main here and I'm really glad you released a guide vid Rurikhan! A lot of people are mentioning really good tips here and some things that you missed so I will add one I don't think somebody mentioned below! The Leaping Thrust has mind's eye on it, meaning that it doesn't bounce. You can do it out of a Guard Dash with A, and out of a Power Guard with X. Out of Guard Dash you can change the angle of Leaping Thrust from where you're facing by a small amount. Out of Power Guard you can change the direction of Leaping Thrust in any direction you want.

  • @VincentLammersma

The most important thing I feel wasn't mentioned is the great use of guard dash for blocking to stay close to a monster. What you want to do with the lance is to block all attacks while you're on the offensive all the time. So usually you're doing 3 attacks and then counter-thrust or dash to reset. Like Ruri said attack - attack - attack - reset. Monsters won't always fit the timing though. But the guard dash can be used to block attacks and keep your offense going. What I want to say is that you can reset yourself with a dash whenever you want but you cannot do a quick responsive counter block or "cancel thrust" as the game calls it after the 1st attack in the rule of three. In those times a guard dash is allowed. In summary for blocking/countering: Attack - attack - attack - cancel thrust = ok Attack - attack - counter thrust = ok Attack - cancel thrust = not allowed here the game after the first attack in the rule of 3 won't allow you to cancel thrust to catch an unexpected attack. BUT!!! Attack - Guard dash = ok. By remembering this the flowing situation can happen and you'll be saved: Attack - Attack - Attack - cancel thrust - attack (here the monster suddenly attacks you and you want to block) - guard dash _

That’s what I though too, but honestly Spiral Thrust really makes putting points into guard feel worth. I think Capcom actually did a pretty good job balancing all the switch skills for Lance. Obviously the best players will pretty much always take insta-block, but it feels like sets with guard are pretty strong (maybe even stronger than sets without). Whether you want to rely entirely on insta-block, treat it as a nice bonus, or not use it at all, there’s a wide variety of Lance play styles that all feel viable (to me at least).

With the spiral thrust, you missed the instant leaping thrust you can do after the second lunge with X; it does huge damage. So if you line yourself up on the second thrust you get a third hit. Also one very good utilities for the twin-vine is in conjunction with the spiral thrust, it allows you to always keep track of where the monster is, so you can leap around with twin vine and aim properly without seeing the monster. i 100% agree though, twin vine is way too costly at 2 wirebugs for what it gives you.

  • @SenaMeushi

Twin Vine definitely needs a 1 wirebug cost, as well as a buff to it's hitbox. Feels really annoying to actually land Twin Vine on some monsters from the usual range I'm at on lance since you're just pulling out a tiny dagger thing to do it. Let me do it with my lance!

LANCE MAIN REPORTING IN! I do have a few reaction to your guide, the first being that I had completely forgotten about the regular shield bash (not the switch skill one) and the power guard! Crazy how parts of the moveset completely blindsided me even though I finished the final boss yesterday (having taken my time, and enjoyed it tremendously) So, thank you for the guide! Now, regarding some of the questioning, and things that are a bit nitpicky but deserve mention: -Anchor Rage has two levels of power increases, a red one, and a gold one. The gold one is better than the yellow one. I also did some tests on something different (namely whether power prolonger works on that buff -it doesn't-) and discovered that the buff level depends on the damage you would have taken, armor included (meaning that for weaker monsters you'd like to kill real quick, you might want to actually have LESS defense to trigger the better buff.) -Spiral thrust being hard to direct is -absolutely- no joke, you're right about that. It's hard to -show- but basically, you really should know where you're going right as the maneuver starts. Anything else is a ticket to anywhere-but-where-you'd-like. Also, after the second spiral thrust dash, you can push a button to have another poke, actually the end of a charge. Meaning that you can do some pretty good damage with it. And if you go just past the monster, you can even do the backwards sweep! -The standard triple poke is indeed bread, butter, love and life. Beware since the steps -do- move you a little forward, so it can be tricky to poke, say, a paralyzed Diablos tail with precision. For repositioning, don't forget (like I always do) to just use B for the short backwards hop, instead of going back+B and having to overcompensate -I share your thoughts on the instant block. The cross slash looks cool, but the last thing I want, ESPECIALLY on fights I don't know well, is ANY animation commitment on my block. And that has some. The difference seems small, but feels massive. Don't like it either. -I'm not sure you mentioned the poke with the shield still up? It's useless 99% of the time sure, but it's nice to detonate explosive barrels when you don't have a ranged character with you. -Regarding Twin Vine. I do like it! I agree that it costs too much/that the recharge time is too long. But once it's setup, it can last quite a while, you do have to play it safer while your first wirebug recharges however and you can go crazy with the spiral thrusts/anchor rage (and by the way, learning that there were counters with hyper armor is crazy and makes me super envious). However, the benefits are great both in terms of damage and in terms of fun. Damagewise... Well the thing is, the lance isn't more damaging in a single hit than a greatsword, it doesn't hit as many times as dual blades... The damage it deals however is through uptime. You can exploit as occasions and openings things that other weapons would never dare approach. Basically, your damage increase lies not in your bigger numbers or faster hits, but in the times where other weapons cannot hit. So, when a monster jumps backwards halfway across a zone, going along is great. More time doing damage is good. For the fun part, there's so many good stuff you can do. I started liking the skill when a Lagombi knocked me off a cliff, and I just landed, and bounced right back onto the Lagombi. past the cliff. And then, I started REALLY liking the skill when I had a wire in a Khezu, that soon after stuck to the ceiling. And so I could just bounce upwards and unstick it with an aerial lance hit. It was great! Jumping over an Almudron's mud wave is also pretty useful too... Which reminds me, one of the most important traits of the twin vines jump: YOU GUARD DURING THE JUMP. That's right, bounce right in a Rathalos's fireball all day, you don't need to care about it, you're just blocking it mid-air like you're playing Guilty Gear. Now, the guard does drop when you reach the monster itself and "bounce" off of it, so beware. But during the initial approach, you're just air-blocking like nobody's business. Now I absolutely agree on the fact that the payoff for bouncing just doesn't -feel- weighty at all. It's just a pretty pitful poke and nothing else. If you could do a dive like insect glaive can off of the twin vine that'd be awesome, but as it stands, your only options are a single poke or starting a charge, and it just feels bad, even if the vine's main purpose is uptime, not damage in itself. Lastly, flinch-free... Man, that IS completely indispensible. I had a couple of hunts without it, with TWO longsword users with me. Could barely land a poke. That was the worst! And yeah regarding weapon, Lance is at this weird spot where it's not as fast as -the fast- weapons, and not as slow as -the slow- weapons, so it can kinda work with both raw and elemental, kinda? Like, the Diablos lance helps free some slots for the skill tax in particular, but the Volvidion lance paralyzing a monster like, two to three times in a single hunt is also great so, it's the odd middle weight I feel! Anyway, hope that comment provided some not-that-good-but-dedicated lance main insight! Keep the questions coming if you have any!

Hey Rurikhan! Was super excited to hear on Third Fleet that you were about to put out a Lance video. Watched the whole thing (a few times) and have a couple additional notes! - Leaping Thrust and Lance Charge can be a big source of frustration for teammates. It will stagger them heavily, so new Lancers beware of how you aim those Leaping Thrusts when repositioning. - Something that might help you with Counter Guard - you do not need to press back on the L-stick to Counter Guard or Power Guard. Just the button inputs, no stick. - Very important note about Power Guard, and really it's main purpose - it can block attacks nonstop until you are out of stamina or cancel by executing a counter attack/leaping thrust. It uses Stamina opposite to how standard guarding works. A standard Guard consumes stamina whenever you block, a Power Guard *stops* consuming stamina whenever you block. Very good for those Rajang combos and other onslaught abilities. - Another Power Guard note! You can Counterattack in any direction from a Power Guard. When executing the Counterattack (A) press the Left Stick in any direction and you will Counterattack in that direction. No more counter attack whiffs! - Lance Charge's jump attack no longer does mounting damage :( - Twin Vines as you said is pretty lackluster, but can be good for a few monsters like Tigrex or Diablos who just WON'T HOLD STILL. - Anchor Rage's Counterattack can be redirected in the same way as a Power Guard Counterattack. Lstick and A in the direction you want to attack, that's certainly an attack you don't want to miss. And this tidbit I will give it's own section, since it is SUPER important right now for how you build your Lance set in Rise. The Guard skill cancels out Anchor Rage. Anchor Rage's damage buff is actually based on knockback, not incoming damage. The more knockback negated by the Anchor Rage, the higher the damage buff it gives you, up to 15%. The problem is that Guard reduces and eventually cancels out knockback. If your Guard skill is cancelling out all knockback, then your Anchor Rage will not provide any damage buff whatsoever. I'm extremely disappointed by this interaction because obviously Guard feels super good to have in a build, but it's always been in favor of sticking to the monster and doing damage - now it's sapping damage away from a cool new skill. If you want to get the maximum benefit out of Anchor Rage, Guard is no longer your friend. If you want to stick that old Iron Wall Lance style of play, Spiral Thrust might be the better option for a Guard based Lance build. Thanks for the video!

Some lance tips: The low poke moves you forward more than the upward poke, incase you are just a hair too far. The power guard thrust is fantastic for changing attack direction, ex 14:24. And can endlessly combo with charged sweep. Shield bash, leaping thrust, running leaping thrust, counter thrust, power guard thrust, and the running finisher all have mind's eye(no bounce) With anchor rage you can use a large bomb and a guard poke, to activate on command. Also gaijin tweeted that the power you get from AR comes from the knockback you would of received (guard skills affect this) With spiral thrust you can follow up with a strong poke or a reverse sweep, so thats 3 meaty pokes if you line it up just right. With the dash options, you can press guard to stop on a dime. If your weapon is away, holding guard and pressing X+A will unsheathe and block. Guard advancing and leaping thrust through roars is fun. Guard advancing is good for moving and attacking. My current fave lance is the pukei lance. Skills I like to use are Constitution (block and hop more) Recovery speed (heal chip damage) Recovery up (less time sheathed) Edit: I just learned that the start of the counter thrust can activate Offensive Guard. This is good cause you are blocking before the counter, in case you are early/late with trying to activate Offensive Guard. Also guard poking a large bomb activates Offensive Guard.

You missed something about Spiral Thrust and forgot to mention something about Anchor Rage. After you do the Spiral Thrust, you can press X to do a really strong finishing thrust, or back + X to do a reverse sweep. Also, Anchor Rage will only do the thrust after a counter. It's a big hit, but it's useless unless the monster is attacking, you have bombs, or another player hits you (which could cause you to get hit). The Spiral Thrust counter can also be triggered off of other players attacks, so in multiplayer, you can use it next to someone to get the buff. Anchor Rage's buff and counter is also dependent on the strength of the attack you block, being that a stronger attack results in a stronger counter and a stronger buff (the length of the buff doesn't change though). Spiral thrust's buff is constant, and doesn't change in strength regardless of how strong the attack you countered is (as long as the attack doesn't have large knockback, in which case the move gets cancelled and a wirebug gets consumed). TLDR: Spiral Thrust good, Anchor Rage bad.

  • @Andrew-H478

    @Andrew-H478

I disagree with the TL;DR just on the grounds that Anchor Rage's window is much more generous, and it's a perfect guard whereas Spiral Thrust is not. You could Anchor Rage Magnamalo's dive bomb without so much as a scratch, but it'll still knock you on your butt if you try to Spiral Thrust parry it.

@@Andrew-H478 @Andrew You could also use spiral thrust evasively, as I have on many occasions. If you do it right, you could still end up in a great position while dealing damage. Lance main here: Anchor Rage is Primarily meant for bigger attacks, and when you save it for said big attacks what normally happens is you get the damage boost and the Counter attack, but usually you also can straight up stagger the monster with it very often. it's a move that benefits you for knowing more about the monsters and saving it for their strongest attacks. it's meant for bigger attacks but you can also use if for smaller ones just to get a slight damage boost. as for regular attacks, you're better off countering normally or simply blocking as you would in any other mh game. also the appeal of the move that sends you flying through the air, is that it sorta brings back Aerial Style from GU, which is an automatic plus for anyone who loved the sheer overpowered-ness of that style on that weapon. only difference being that your aerial attack counts as one attack rather than a multi-hit attack. aside from that, everything is still there, it blocks on your way to the monster, it closes the gap fast thus solving the old mobility issues of lance (especially for those who don't like using the moves introduced in world that much) and it lasts for a long time, enough to activate it and use two rage anchors sparingly to remain with boosted damage. plus it meshes well with the Shield Rush move as it essentially turns your pointy stick, into a flying pointy hammer, allowing you to KO monsters like crazy. last but not least, yeah insta-block is kinda poopy, and is pretty much just a slower block than the regular, only benefit I can think of for it is: it's technically faster then a fully charged Wide-Sweep on it's own, and the wideness of the attack is good for cutting low hanging tails such as on Royal Ludroth for example. other than that I don't see much appeal to it, however for speedrunners that were already used to pressing block for a short period of time in order to remain attacking, this helps reward them, plus it doesn't last too long either way and I think you can evade out of it or continue attacking. That's all I observed with it atleast, so far in testing out each weapon, I've noticed that each weapon is KINDA perfected, but only to THEIR main audience for the exception of Hunting Horn which has two modes, one for their original audience and one for the new fans (the ultra flashy one you start out with) and the other weapon being Bow, which kinda got shafted this time around, but hey atleast it has a stamina boosting silkbind. (good luck with that video when you get around to it, especially since we know how you feel about the Bow from on the Podcast.) all in all I really like what they did with the lance, it's retained all of what made it good from previous games, but with the addition of certain stuff from GU and World combined, it's honestly like having either regular lance, or a cross between Adept and Aerial style, as a choice for anyone playing it and therefore it's also good to pick up for newer players and returning players alike. ps. love your videos ruri, never stop being awesome, and have a great day and a fun time hunting!

The shield charge, I just wish you went a little further, or used less stamina. Oh, and lance having more mounting damage. As of now, it's pretty much *the worst* weapon to get mounts with. You can cancel the normal dash into a shield with ZR, very useful if it attacks while you’re charging. You can guard dash backwards which is neat to combo the leaping trusts for status or element. The actual window for the counter on spiral trust is quite small but it is a great mobility tool, but personally I prefer anchor rage. Offensive Guard is a must since it’s basically 15% free damage bonus at level 3 and you need at only one level of Guard Up to be able to block those unblockables for ultimate aggressive tankiness

Lance main here: I actually use Twin Vine much more often than my other silkbind skill (partly because it costs two wirebugs), and I typically try to refresh it every time I have two wirebugs. I do think that the increased attention you're supposed to get from the monster while linked to it just a straight up lie, lol. But the reason I always have it up is that you can always yank yourself to the monster's position, and it seems that you are in a blocking state the whole way there. On top of that, when you attack at the end of the leap you do mounting damage (free mounting damage), and it does around double the damage of a normal poke. It's also great in combination with Shield Charge, due to its shorter range than Dash Attack. I'm okay blowing all my my silkbugs on just Twin Vine because I find the damage you gain from literally always being on top of the monster to be greater than the damage gained from the buffs from Anchor Rage and Spiral Thrust. Also I always run high Guard and Guard Up so I'm not concerned about being able to block or counter with my normal moves. As far as landing the dagger strike with Twin Vines, yeah, I miss quite a bit which is why I always try to refresh at 2 bugs. It does make it easier if you know a monster's moveset and you know when you're going to be able to stick them in the leg with it, which is much easier than trying to get them in the head since it doesn't matter where you're tethered to. I also agree that you have to have one rank of Flinch Free to play well online (not so much solo) and Insta-Block is kinda trash, lol. Also, since I generally have Twin Vine for closing distance, I mainly use Shield Charge for knocking out monsters by charging at their head (or if I failed Twin Vine twice in a row). Guard Dash, followed by A is a good way to close medium distances as well. Also I prefer a backwards Guard Dash instead of a back hop to end a combo where I want to disengage, much safer. I prefer not to use Evade Extender with the lance because it messes with my ability to stay in position between triple poke combos. With increased guard and Twin Vine mobility I don't find evasion to be very important. I did some shoddy testing in the training area with triple poke vs Charged Wide Sweep -> Thrust -> Charged Wide Sweep combos over 30 seconds and found that the Charged Wide Sweep combos only did about 2/3 the damage of triple pokes over time. However, CWS is better for small windows and wake-up attacks... I think that's everything I can think of! Disclaimer: This is all in my experience and opinion. Speed runners and min/maxers are gonna play different than I do, probably.

Twin vines is mainly for charging guard. It gives you a gap closer with little to no cost. Guard point at the start up into charging guard in the air. This, flying monsters, chasing with charging thrust, monsters that stick on walls/ceiling, and easy access to parts that are hard to reach or that you want to focus. That guard point on start up is really nice.

I love Spiral Thrust. I love, that you start charging directly after a jump. But two things let me put down the lance again after 10 hours in Rise: 1. Why can't we joust from a Palamute's back? 2. Also note that twin vine doesn't waste silk bind to launch to where you attached it. So you can spam it to keep the offensive, or for monsters that move alot and correct me of im wrong but I think it also recovers your stamina

First time using the Lance in MH and its been in my main weapon. Something I really like about the game over all is the versatility in build and playstyle with slugger 2 and 3 shield Chard and guard dash are amazing for KO dmg which is almost as satisfying as the hammer.

I’ve been a Lance main since Tri on the wii. Favorite weapon by far; and I’m so glad that Great Baggi is back so I can recreate myself from Tri.

Totally agree with the skill binds. They're kinda rough right now. My preference would be have the big counter and the one where you can dash twice. It's too hard to connect on the flying tether attacks to be useful. I'd also like to have both charge moves. Love the shield charge. The lance has me making painful choices on skill binds, not fun ones. I'm usually gunlance first, lance second and I'm a little pained.

Didn't give myself the chance to play Lance in the previous Monster Hunter games, but I really love this iteration even with Twin Vine's hitbox being small and Insta-block not being the best payoff. Landing a clean counter to trigger both Offensive Guard and Anchor Rage against every move in the game is personally satisfying

In regards to the counters, the wirebug counter cannot be canceled sure but the regular counter, while not having super armor can be chained so long as an attack triggers it. So multi hit moves you should use regular counter first, then the anchor rage for the last attack.

Finally some Lance content! Sometimes i think i'm the only one to do that. Regarding the Twin Vines, if you Jump to the Monster and use the Shield Dash, you can easily KO the Monster. Don't underestimate that! EDIT: just saw you mention that in the Shield Dash section ;-)

I only started to love Lance back in 4U after discovering evade lancing but the ultra guard changed that immensely. Something I'd like to add about that is the attack positioning as well. The normal counter stabs up but if you do ultra guard you can press X and stab forward. This is very helpful if the monster gets knocked over as you're guarding or you know an upward strike will miss. What I'd like to see is if anchor rage can get a longer time on the power up, but more importantly I'd like the spiral dash moved to the zl x attack and maybe that fancy corkscrew could become the alternate for Anchorage if someone wanted to do so. Good vid, thanks!

Mained Hunting Horn during GU and World but didn't like the Rise version. Now switched to Lance and it's my main now. Absolutely love it

Only use I have really had for twin vines is hitting spots on monsters back or jumping over khezu's lightning projectile attack. Admittedly, the latter one is pretty stylish and satisfying.

I like using the Shield Charge move with Twin Vine jumps. The switch skill you have selected (Dash attack vs Shield Charge) determines what happens when you press ZR when in the air from the Twin Vine jumps (or any other jump), and I believe the block from Shield Charge still works even when you are using it in the air. And since Shield Charge ends itself naturally, you can chain a couple Twin Vine jump -> aerial Shield Charge bashes in a row.

The beauty of instaguard is that it procs offensive guard so in a way, it trains you to have offensive guard most of the time when you master it

Issue with that is that the timing on Instant Guard is *TIGHTER* than Offensive Guard. Your can literally proc Offensive Guard on a failed Instant lol

Hey thanks for the vid. I love the lance in this game. Was a heavy bowgun main in world... beautiful weapon too. SO! I’ve had one struggle with lance... and it’s the old “double attacks” from monsters. Second one always gets me because I counter the first. I guess the only solid way around it is to do the power guard and hold it? Spiral thrust would work great too looks like (haven’t unlocked it yet)... but I also found if you hold forward after counter thrust.... it will do a horizontal poke instead of standard upward poke.... and that seems to be quicker... which may allow me to do another quick counter guard. But maybe the impact of the first hit changes the time it takes to recover from your poke? I have a lot to learn about putting guard skill on... and learning what it does for me. So cool I love this game. Peace love man!!!
