The bad songs with overused autotune, a racism allegory more blatant than Avatar/Ferngully's environmentalist message, the monster society vs human society thing, the school setting, the blatant zoomer pandering from boomers who don't understand internet culture at all, etc.

I mean, a character with the expectation and priviledge of belonging to a ruling bloodline who doesn't have any real powers but gets sent to a school for (magically) gifted kids and has to come to terms with the fact that in our post-feudal world she is now effectively the bottom of the pack? It could work as both redeemable antagonist and protagonist given the right focus. For example. Using her as protagonist on this film's plot. Imagine if instead of introducing last minute that the school is crumbling due to a non-monster being in it, (which also means that the villain would've won by doing nothing... great plot!) we are introduced from the start to the school's security system popping off and everyone being on edge about it. So of course this might feed Cleopatra's insecurities, because as a practically normal human she becomes convinced she's at fault as the movie goes on. Which is a way better reason to go for the potion that "my nails retract sometimes". Now about Cleo, let's introduce her as basically a redeemable bully type (like the protagonist from Happy Death Day), but as we spend more time with her it becomes obvious that she's so uptight due to societal pressure and her own insecurity, and we see how some of the other monsters reject her due to her attitudes while others try to break through. Except for the real villain, who at first we see as her "confidant" due to family relations, but as the plot progresses the audience can see he's very much feeding her worse instincts and manipulating her into going after the potion. So let's say close to the end she gives him the potion because he claims to be able to modify it so it's safe, but he just drinks it instead, and shows that he is the human, and therefore she is indeed a monster, she just doesn't have her powers yet because she is the monster equivalent of "developmentally challenged". Combine that plot with a good climax, specially one where she winds up being important in saving the others precisely because the villain thoroughly underestimates her, and wrap it up with a nice message about accepting your personal (medical or otherwise) challenges, say by showing that her parents in the end when they reunite understand she broke under the pressure and try to accept her when she feared they'd be furious. And this could be a pretty decent film... Certainly better than this crap.

Dumbsville should definitely have a meme channel, he has a sense of humor of a 14 year old and I love it.

also the outfit design was a nightmare. How little did they pay the designer to let the characters wear those outfits, like seriously.

The fucked up thing I learned about Cleo and that one character who said she has "mummy issues": According to MH lore, Cleo's mother was actually murdered. Legit murdered. That'd be like saying "Oh don't mind her, her mom was killed in front of her. Never mind her trauma, she's just a bitch". Not the character you'd wanna make that joke about.

A lot of older movies has good CGi, you're right. The problem isn't the technology, it's that companies don't care anymore, Hollywood is lazy, projects are insanely rushed, and the VFX artists are extremely overworked. This results in the god-awful CGI you seen in modern marvel despite each film having a 10M+ budget. Dr Strange's third eye, the CGI black kid hologram in Thor, every instance of CGi in She-Hulk and Ms.Marvel, etc. It's almost reaching SpyKids or Sharkboy and Lavagirl levels of bad CGi, and those films bad CGi was intentional!

Cece Balagot goes by he/him but, was more than delightful to play this role. So, don't blame the actor, blame the fans even if it really doesn't do any harm, G1 Frankie was a vanilla protagonist anyway.

I remember seeing this commercial for monster high with the tagline "SAVE FRANKIE, SAVE FRANKIE" which blared on the screen and it sent me into a panic attack

As a longtime MH fan and doll collector, I feel like I dodged a bullet after watching the spoiler reviews. I wasn't able to watch the movie due to not having Cable or Paramount Plus, and after hearing from other people about how much the lore and characters have been changed, or ruined in Jackson Jeckel/Holt Hyde's case (The original son of Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde from MH Gen 1), I am kind of relieved that I was spared that kind of suffering. Its sad to see something that you loved growing up get butchered in such a corporate way. At least the dolls for Gen 3 are an improvement over the nightmare that was the 2016 MH reboot.

With the 2016 reboot, it cheapened the quality of the dolls, and it changed the lore and the character designs in a way that made them look less edgy and interesting. The 2022 MH reboot is objectively better than the 2016 MH reboot by comparison of the animated shows and the actual doll quality for each generation, though.

I see what they were going for but it just came out as an "annoying blue haired afab" stereotype to me. At a guess they probably made frankie non-binary since they're a Frankenstein of parts (which doesnt help with the joke that people say "people who use they them pronoun's are dumb because they think they're multiple people " imo) and that sorta combined with frankie's socially awkward and scatterbrained personality made this happen 💀

I like how they made Frankie NB because the producers decided to jump in the trend of "Look! we have an LGBT character! we are inclusive!!1!" that companys are doing lately, but they made Clawdeen, the one character that basically all the community and even the original creator of the dolls acepted as a lesbian, and they made her have a straight romance LMAOOOO. They did the same thing years back when they tried to do a "reboot" that als sucked. LGBT characters are a great idea for Monster High, but since the creators cant put two and two together they will probably never do it right.

TBF, the Frankie being they/them makes sense because she is made of several corpses, so it is they/them as in many people not NB. The problem is that joke is WAY too clever for this movie, so even if that was the intention, it still feels like Twitter pandering.

I remember watching this movie with my little cousin and her friends for her birthday, while all of the adults had their own “private celebration” with the grown-up drinks, and when the one monster said that they had they/them pronouns, one of the girls said “This bitch two people or sumthin’?”, and before I could fully stifle my laughter, another girl said “This corpse has got a lot of gal for someone within “Wikipedia edit “is” to “was”” range.” At which point I fully lost it, and they all glared at me like I had laughed at a funeral, or something.

Even like 2018 with Avengers Endgame the CGi was good. Now it's like 99% awful. Companies aren't putting in any effort anymore on 99% of projects and it shows. Though there are some good movies/shows that came out recently that had good CGi so at least there's hope. Just little to none from all the big studios.

Philippines CGI in 2023 looks worse than DOOM 1993. With more glitches than Cyberpunk 2077. And people are impressed and think it’s hyperrealistic. This is considered futuristic sci-fi hypertech in the Philippines.

Remember how the original monster high was not only about being yourself but about edgy Goth Girls who liked rock n roll? And now this movie is about K Pop and is one of the most corporate shit ever?

As a kid who grew up with monster high and seeing the new live action trailer I knew it was gonna awful from the start. I just wish they actually cared about Monster high and actually tried to make a good reboot. Instead they just pissed on the franchise.

Funny how Paramount released the worst movie of 2022 with Monster High and two of the best films of 2022 with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Top Gun: Maverick.

Honestly, i prefer what they did to her over what they did to the other cast of characters. She was nowhere near as unbearable as clawdeen even though they made her discount regina george.

Of course it's another Funny Highschool Musical Movie #24 that will definitely have really intriguing high school characters that act like they're in high school

It's actually making me WANT to get back into Monster High (g1), to remind myself and appreciate how good it should be and was. I watched the webisodes and absolutely love them, but I was never interested in the cg movies because I don't like how they look, but after knowing this live action schlock exists, I think I want to watch them after all 😂

The Draculaura Cosplay i did as a 7yo for a halloween Party looks better than everyone in this film.

As a long time Monster High fan, this is atrocious. I don't know who it was made for.

I watched the cartoon back to back awhile back she definitely was straight cause she was always complaining how she can’t get a guy and but she did kinda act sus around girls too so I guess bi? Idk this series is a childhood classic for me and I left it behind in the sea for a reason, the second I come back I see that they trashed it beyond repair

Isn't Cleo supposed to be one of the few main protagonist and Toralei being the main antagonist? Clawdeen were supposed to have A LOT of siblings and a mom who works there also not to mention Clawdeens confident and energetic personality. Monster high couldve made a movie that was based from the OG AU instead of this mostrosity. This feels ruined to see... even the ships all messed up from what I used to see when I was a kid. CHILDHOOD RUINED 😭

Hyde could've attacked Bloodgood at the dinner. Instead he wasted time fighting teenagers.

Never expected "demondice-type beat" to be used as an insult one day, I'm impressed.

I remember when the toy line first came out. The monster angle was an allegory for the characters being imperfect and that not being a problem. It was also meant for edgelord girls that thought barbie was too mainstream. Glad to know they somehow sanitized the concept even more over the years.

A part of me feels like the they/them pronouns that Franky uses is supposed to be a joke on how Frankenstein's monster has bodyparts that originally belonged to multiple dead people, but I honestly can't tell if they were trying to make a joke or or being completely serious.

The trailers ive seen made the movie look like its all about draculora having daddy issues
