Most of the characters wore blue, green and yellow so it’s still weird they’d say it’s because it wasn’t girly enough. I see degraded versions of barbie dolls at stores now. I used to pay rm40+ (about $10+ equivalent) and get one good ball jointed barbie fashionista doll with good quality clothing to the touch (good memories, wow) , whereas now the same stores sell these ugly barbie sets that costs more than what it gives at the same price, with tacky pastel clothes that feel like a weird combo of plastic + paper.

For anyone one wondering the “hints” in kiyomi’s dairy, they’re about how her was practicing her powers of opening portals and one day she saw a groups of ghouls (the main monster high ghouls) through one. She was particularly “fascinated” by Draculaura, saying her outfits were “totes adorb” and saying she liked the way she talked to the point where she begun to speak like her. She said in another entry that she was looking at the ghouls again but was only fixated on Draculaura. In another entry she says she went shopping to dress more like the group of ghouls, especially Draculaura.And lastly on another entry she referred to Draculaura as “my “friend” Draculaura” specifically using quotations around friend (I assume she put that instead of “crush”) So in short the team was constantly hinting at Kiyomi having a crush on Draculaura, SO ADORABLE 🥺💝

Supposedly Val wrote in his diary that when he met Spelldon (who I believe is related to Casta Fierce somehow), he “spaced out”. Also, Spelldon looked past Val’s reputation and imperfections and chose to hang out with him anyways. Val most likely spaced out due to a romantic attraction (sorry, I refuse to use the word crush in this scenario) to Spelldon. And, as if it wasn’t clear enough, Valentine had broken so many girls’ hearts and I feel like this is because he wanted to try and force himself not to like guys. He may have been dealing with some internalized homophobia. TL;DR: I wished we could have seen more of Spelldon and Valentine’s connection, and more of Val’s story. This is what I hate about working for companies. Garret lost all the rights to his OWN creation. He can never use it again, no matter how dear and near it is to his heart. I can't imagine having something like that happen to me, I'd be heart broken.

Putting out my two cents and walking away: I never had a problem with Howleen's hair. She's one of the younger characters, so I just assumed she was trying new things and finding her style. Plus, Clawdeen's hair color was always changing, so it made sense for Howleen to be inspired by her big sister, as usual. The fact that Mattel wanted to make her "more feminine" is still gross, but I don't think it was the worst decision they could have made.

Seeing them side by side, I now realize why Howleen's new design is a downgrade It's not that the new design is bad, but it takes away from what makes her different from her older sister, Clawdeen. I'm actually the oldest, but I can still understand wanting a sense of individuality from a sibling and not wanting to be in their shadow, and the new design fails to express that.

I'm not gay but MH also def made me feel better about myself in general. They actually started being sold here when I was nearly too old for toys, so I didn't get to enjoy them too much, but I liked how different they were. They each had a personality, you couldn't get that with other dolls back then. The closest you had to diverse "dolls" were the Bionicles lmao. Like my childhood was very heavily about conformity and having to like put on a mask and be subservient or get your pet stoned and shit, so MH dolls just felt so nice. Like being able to afford to be someone, to be yourself, just felt like a fever dream and I really liked seeing such a thing at least in dolls when I couldn't afford it myself.

I'm Pan and Trans, it really helped to change the clothes because I actually use to redo the clothes on the girls for the masculine clothes, another ironic thing. I actually use to steal my eldest sisters clothes before she came out as trans, whenever she couldn't find her old, masculine clothes, she would actually use my other sisters, plus my mother's, it helped her explore her gender identify more. Everything matters, even the smallest things which don't seem related at all.

Ikr you’d think people would learn by now literally people’s creations were robbed and ruined by people who didn’t create it. If you take someone’s creation and go against what the creator wants your bound to have a massive disaster this happened to Monster High, Ever After High, Avatar: The Last Airbender (with the live action movie, and the live action adaptation) you’re suppose to do what the creator wants because really the only person/people that can understand the creation truly is the creator. Which is why Mattel is falling out they keep ruining their brands with reboots, taking away the animations, etc.

Well, if Karens around the world were that scandalized with mini skirts and stylized bodies, I can't imagine the outrage around Mattel if the went ahead with showing openly some sharacters are LGBT+. It would be worth it, but I don't know if Mattel would've stood their ground.

I like to head canon Cupid and Draculaura as Pansexual, as they are characters that are based around love and it would make sense for them to like every gender.

I seriously wish Garret could take monster high back. Mattel did him waaay dirty. He was the creative lead, he came up with it, it should be his, not Mattel’s. You’d think Mattel would only have assembly and distribution rights, but it’s bs that they had full creative rights to someone else’s ip. Also, could you do a vid talking about upcoming interesting doll lines? Ones like Curvy Girl dolls, or just ones not by the bigger companies?

Mattel has been a bit shady this recent decade.

I had kinda always pictured Madeline Hatter from Ever After High as being Ace. I like the idea of LGBT+ characters in Monster High and Ever After High.

I became depressed when they ended monster high.

The whole “not at the right time” that companies do is actually super hurtful to the lgbt+ community

Honestly I’ve just been headcanoning what Spelldon and Valentine’s relationship would have looked like and how it would have developed. My mind never stops running (thanks ADHD) and so I have so many awesome ideas about how Spelldon acts as a character. It’s kind of up to us to create these things now. We can still keep Monster High alive by making our own content! (And I mean do it respectfully and not gross people out because I’ve seen some things-)

I still have most of my dolls as my sister has broke some of their body parts but, I collected them when I was younger and I never found them ‘scary’. I love they way they looked and liked the sharp cheek bones and the way they looked in the old movies and cartoons as a kid I was more into the movies tho and had them all my favourites were 13 wishes, ghouls rule, boo York and scaris.

Actually it doesn't suck. They paid him for his work. What if you pay someone to build a house for you and once they're finished they decide, "Wow this is actually nicer than I thought. I'm going to keep it!"? Or say you go to McDonalds to buy something to eat and the chef decides, "Nope. I'm hungry and I made this, so it's mine!" even though you already paid for it? It would be even worse with Mattel because it takes a LOT longer to wait around for people like Garrett to brainstorm new ideas for your brand. Garrett could probably buy Monster High off of them, especially since it's at a VERY low point right now. Alternatively, he could make his own new brand. From what I can see, however, Garrett is happy to work for and sell his ideas to someone else. Moose toys will now own any ideas he comes up with, unless of course he has a better deal with them. Money talks though, and I believe anyone with enough money and backbone could approach Mattel with an offer to buy Monster High. Nobody like that exists though, so we get what we get. xP

What I mean is that he can’t continue the doll line without purchasing it from Mattel or complying with that they want monster high to be like, even if he doesnt agree with their vision. I know he made a lot of money from it but it still sucks nonetheless, considering it’s his creation, even if it is Mattel’s property.

@@Noahk98 I think it was more a matter of Mattel and Garrett being a good team. I feel like even if Garrett "could" make new Monster High dolls without any legal issues, I don't think he would. He just doesn't have the means or resources to do it on his own. Even if he did have all that, then I still just feel like he is happier to be creative while letting other people take all the risks and responsibilities. That's just my 2 cents though, and based heavily on him running to work for Moose Toys instead of "following his dreams" or whatever. I feel like his dream is to be creative, and Monster High is dead to him. Again, totally just my opinion. For all I know Mattel could end up re-hiring him, give him partial ownership of Monster High and more responsibilities, and they could both team up to bring Monster High back from the dead.

I remember watching a mini series on the MH channel basically showing storyboards for what seemed like a crossover between MH and EAH I loved it and really want to find it again. It was amazing just to be able to see behind the scenes of the whole thing because most companies made you pay for that stuff. I'll update if I find the name of it. Update: I believe it's called "the lost movie" I may be wrong but it has both characters from MH and EAH. I believe this was the crossover Garrett was speaking of

There is this part in the book series of MH where Clawdeen and Cleo are in the middle of the night talking when Clawdeen suddenly looks at Cleo and gets amazed at how pretty she is. I don’t know why but when I read that as a kid I really thought that Clawdeen liked girls (even if I didn’t know that lesbianism was a thing).

In the exact same book there’s a scene as well where Cleo and Clawdeen are alone walking around and ranting about stuff. clawdeen then thinks that having a conversation with Cleo is better than a ‘hot shower’ and then says it ‘doesn’t matter if they weren’t talking as long as they were together’ 🥺😩😩

What book is that?

I would LOVE an aro ace doll/character. I can look at some kids shows where characters "dont get crushes" and relate, but it would have been awesome to have a moment in some show, maybe a valentine special, where a character tries to either fake a crush or feels left out and frustrated that they don't have people they love, but not anyone they would want to kiss. Then another character saying that sometimes people don't feel that way and that they can always spend time with friends and family they care about. Like I wish I had ace representation growing up rather than find out toward the end of high school that there was a word for what I was and that I didnt have to force myself into a relationship.

It actually p!sses me off- they got rid of Garret and then completely ruined his beautiful work with their Reboot because he ‘made it whilst working with them, so they have the right’. Girl same, I’m 19(almost 20) and the only highlight of my childhood were these dolls(before they all got “girlified” as they would call it, with neon bright colors). My soon-to-be goth ass was in love with monster high and when they took the goth aspect away I was heartbroken. I also wasn’t very fond of all the romance, but it sells so I guess I understand. I miss this part of my childhood... I want it back. Also I will literally buy one of the new dolls if they go through with making them like the og versions.

not shocked there's lgbt character but disappointed we weren't told outright!! i mean, they literally made a born this way lady gaga doll, pretty lgbt friendly if you ask me... the kids probably didn't get it but all the teens and adults did

I absolutely loved Howleens original hair, I didn't hate her redesign but the og orange afro felt a lot more unique compared to the long flowy pink hair. And on the topic of LGBTQ, I came up with a little headcanon some time ago that Deuce Gorgon was trans. Mostly based off the understanding that gorgons can't really reproduce sexually and instead reproduce asexually and that all of them were at least biologically female. I remember I was thinking about this while I was creating some gorgon characters for a fantasy story that I'm working on and my brain just thought of Deuce and wondered "If all gorgons are female, how did Deuce happen?" at which point I rationalized that he must be trans. I told some of my friends about my new headcanon, one of whom is a trans man, and they all loved it. No idea if this is canon or not but I think it'd be a neat little thing to have Deuce as trans character :D Thoughts?

I didn’t even know about the lgbt+ community until way later in life because it keeps being censored from children as if it’s “scandalous”. That made it a lot harder for me when it came to realizing I was gay. There are so many kids who are part of the lgbt+ community but don’t even know such a thing exists so they feel alone, confused and scared. Even kids who aren’t part of the community can learn to be accepting. There is never a “bad time”.

I agree with Em. Kids shows are very influential on young children. I would even go so far as to argue that every kids' show should feature completely platonic characters. You can tell a good story without dating, sexual attraction, and so on. If you want to include those things then it should be an adults' show. That's why we have stuff like Game of Thrones. We don't need it in My Little Pony, PAW Patrol, The Smurfs and the like. Those should focus heavily on friendships, doing the right thing, etc..

@Ember Girl I can see the benefits of an episode about dating, and it could just be two friends hanging out. Or if it's someone they just met then the episode could teach about how you should bring along a friend on first dates and stuff like that. It could be some fun activity like hanging out at the arcade, going to the movies, etc.. Basically like a "ghouls' night out" but with a new friend. There could be further lessons like having the new ghoul be all grabby, touchy, etc.. (low key, like touching their hair, hands, arm and shoulders, etc..) and teaching kids not to invade someone's personal space like that. There's a lot they could do with a kids show without mentioning anything sexual. Those very adult and serious issues should be up to parents to discuss with their kids, and not some stranger / third party. I do think that parents should be educated on these matters, but NOT the kids! Kids need their innocence as long as they can have it.

1:51 Well, although I do love Howleen’s pink hair, I don’t think they should have changed it. Her orange afro was absolutely beautiful and as someone who has 2 howleen dolls, I have to say that I prefer her curly orange hair.

I love that is open to interpretation with his characters. I know some people could be very protective of their creations, but sounds like he’s open to any view of his characters as long as they are being appreciated

Omg, this reminds me of the Toralei diary where she and Cleo were being... ahem, very friendly 😅💕 I don't remember exactly, but I remember them cuddling and napping together and growing closer despite their tendency to squabble. The fact that the diaries were actually used to hint at LGBT+ characters totally makes me think this was on purpose... we stan bisexual Cleo and lesbian Toralei 💖💕

I love how Zomby Gaga's pledge had to do with "fighting against evil" when that was never what MH was about. Yes MH fought against bullying but by teaching people to accept each other not "destroy evil"

Powers that be, "no negative light on those gays, you cant do that to a gay" D-did they miss the part where he said the end was suppose to have the boi realize hes happier being his authentic self and learning to love himself?

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Valentine deserves his redemption just like Wisp got hers. I would have loved to see how he and Spelldon’s relationship developed over the course of time and see the relief and happiness and love that Valentine felt when he could finally express himself to someone. Like, god, it would have been incredible to see!

9:46 Why can't he talk about his own project ideas? They're his ideas that were never created. Can Mattel really trademark an idea he never got to make and never let him talk about it? That is SO messed up.

It happens with programming and coding ideas as well. Any ideas, or side projects, the company has a right to it. You sign the rights away when you work for the company/ It's why Safiya and many former Buzzfeed employees had to completely restart.

Honestly i think that Valentine× Spelldon is so adorable. And the way he was talking about him in his diary is so adorable. It would have been much better if they we a couple in the series and came out in a box together. That would be so cute😍😍

I'm not gonna lie; I understand where they're coming from with not putting lgbt characters in a tv show for kids, *but* I feel the same way about them putting any sort of hetero romance in a kids movie. Children shouldn't even have to think about liking the other gender or their own gender. The focus should be about loving yourself as a person because there are way too many people who lack that in this society. Yes, introducing lgbt characters at an early age can help instill that homosexuality is normal, but again; children aren't mature enough to be thinking about sexuality. I will say this though; they've already made a point about heterosexuality so you may as well bring in the lgbt representation and stop making a big deal out of it.

B-but romance is my favorite genre, though I can admit, when I was younger (and still today to some degree) I was never really focused on the romance in a lot of my favorite movies/shows. But I do think it’s ok to show kids romance but it’s fine to have different opinions on these things.

Yes and no 100% loool, I think it's okay if it's for tweens becuse it's important for them to feel validated on their new found love interests, BUT, if romance is shown it should be shown with EVERY sexuality (otherwise it doesn't serve its purpose) AND I HATE when romance is involved in a show that's meant for young kids. So for me personally, it depends

MH was perfect for my daughter. She never bonded to other typical dolls, but the monsters were just so her. Cute but a touch "odd", all of them so different from each other and that was what made them wonderful. I miss them.

one of the reasons my sister and i loved monster high was because cleo was egyptian! we're arab and we didn't see a lot of girls like us so that was cool. our mom liked it too because their outfits reminded her of her style as a teen
