Monster Girl: Trish Carden on Sculpting Warhammer

Trish Carden was kind enough to spend some time with me chatting through her history and career with Games Workshop, and the creative process on a few of her sculpts.

People talk a lot about gws terrible practices, the prices, the ip stuff, the regional pricing stuff. But the worst thing I think is something they've done basically with nobody complaining about it is completely scrub any and all crediting from the sculptors and the rules writers, aka the people who actually do the stuff that is why you have ever heard of games workshop at all. All these wonderful people who are these legendary figures in our hobby now, so many people now carry on their incredible work completely anonymously, locked behind ironclad ndas that forbid them from even doing the simple basic thing of taking a thing they made and saying "I made this." Any time the work that someone does becomes so invaluable, so acclaimed and their compensation so completely disconnected from the value of their labor then the people who make their living only by owning an idea rather than ever contributing anything to it have to entirely alienate them from the people who love their work.

Do remember the reason why they stopped crediting rules writers was literal death threats. (agree on crediting all their artists though).

Marauder were a lot better than GW at the time. Their ogres, black orcs and of course the giant were some of the best sculpts ever. Trish's work, even though I didn't know her name at the time, was among my favourite in all the miniatures available as a teenager.

Words can't describe how amazing these videos are. My teenage years were well into 3rd edition (around the turn of the millennium) but the very first copy I ever picked up was issue 211 with the Circle of Blood cover art by the amazing Mark Gibbons (who still remains to this day one of my favourite warhammer artists) and I was deep into 2nd edition era stuff long before I even bothered to turn to 3rd ed 40k. Seeing all these people described on the pages back then has been an incredible journey (about to check out the one on Inquisitor with John Blanche and Gav Thorpe next followed by the White Dwarf one with Adrian Wood). I can't thank you guys enough for interviewing these legendary figures.
