Monster Cod in the river Humber

Ойын-сауық

Well, the day before the Daiwa Open, we intended on fishing behind Makro in Hull. But with the strong easterly winds, and a building sea, the junior open competition was moved to that location. I'd heard of this little spot a little further along the A63 with reasonable access and parking.
On arrival, there were already a couple of cars parked up, and guys fishing various spots along the wall. We found a quiet spot and settled in with a view to assessing how bad the tidal pull would be.
I'll let the video do the talking, but I'm pleased to say this us definitely a spot I'll be returning to. A new PB for me, and my dad then going on to better that too!
Until next time, take care and tight lines!

    It shows just how much things have changed for the worse, I remember back in the 60s/70s/80s catching double figure Cod from the beaches in the Northeast, anywhere from 70 to 120 yds out.... how sad it is these days

    It's been a rough couple of years, but I definitely see an improvement this year. Personally I think the wind farms have a lot to answer for, I'm hoping they're providing a safe haven which will only see inshore fish stocks improve year on year...buts let wait and see!

    @@theawfulangler I hope you are correct, BUT I remember when the built the nuclear power station at Hartlepool, people were hoping for Bass around the hot water outlet warming up the sea, never happened, BUT I do remember a bluddy great russian factory ship anchored off the beach from seaham to hartlepool between june to september and lots of smaller boats feeding it... that went on for most of the 70's.... it got where we had to cast farther and farther to catch fish..... my mate and I got hold of Paul Kerry and John Holden books and taught our selves long distance casting. we both got carbon fibre conoflex rods and tournament reels, (mine a Diawa millionaire with the level wind and gearing removed) but slowly even after a couple of years, you just couldn't cast far enough from the beach to catch decent size fish. In fact, My mate (looked a bit like John Holden well he had a big beard) and he want if for a few casting tournaments and won a few locally. He actually moved up to the Scottish side of the solway, a place called Dumore so we had a more good years there and Balcary point. But on the NE coast we had to go out on boats to get decent size fish....... anyway upshot was as the fish dropped off, so did I and now in my early 70s, I keep a couple of telescopic spinning rods and appropriate reels and a few lures and spinners in the back of the car and when time permits or I park up near a suitable bit of water or pier, I chuck a few casts and get a few mackerel or coalie or whatever talks the bait... still, I have my memories!!! keep up the vids, and well done for cleaning up after scroats when conger fishing

    Bullnose...you certainly know your marks Carl! Its been slow fishing for the last couple of years since I got back in to fishing after the usual career break etc. But this season it seems to be picking up. My personal thought is that the wind farms are now providing a haven free of trawlers etc.

Sounds a long time ago but remember it like yesterday. Couple of guys from South Yorkshire used to fish for big eels at the same time. They were that big that they used to push the concrete slab off the top of the bucket they were keeping them in. Good time. RIP sis.

    Its funny how the smallest fish give you the biggest bites! I've caught canny sized cod at The Copthorne Hotel on the River Tyne and the only way I knew I'd caught them was when I felt the weight of them when reeling in. Sometimes the biggest fish don't bite at all!

    When you catch fish from the Humber, like behind Makro, is it edible? Might be a stupid question because Im not a fisherman but I see people fishing there often and it just looks like a mud bowl. Not sure that anything living in there would taste too good.

  • @theawfulangler

    @theawfulangler

    Жыл бұрын

    Perfectly sensible question, mate. It all depends on the fish and the location. I know a few places, such as docks, etc, where you wouldnt want to eat the plaice from, as they just feed sludge thats sat on the bottom full of oil/fuel spills. Estuaries arent such a concern to me, its always got a good flow of running water, so yes whilst it mixes the sand, etc, up, it's relatively fresh. Also unlike most flat fish in there, the Cod are migrating as such, so relatively new to the area. Ultimately it all comes down to personal taste and experience. You might have different preferences, or a more subtle palette (that's not hard 😂), than me! P.s. that cod tasted delicious 😋

    Born and raised in Grimsby, the Humber is NOT a river. It is an estuary. A river is where water comes to the surface, and over time finds its way to the sea forming a river. A river has to have a source, where is journey starts. The Humber was formed when two great rivers, the Ouse and the Trent came together and formed the estuary flowing into the North Sea..
