I completely missed that reference as a kid... I always wondered what it meant though. So much so that when I first heard the JFK conspiracy, I was like "ow, like in Monkey Island!"

this was the funniest game ever... just remember diologues like Meathook: You've got a real attitude problem! Guybrush: Well...you've got a real hair problem! Meathook: You just don't know when to quit, do you? Guybrush: Neither did your barber. just amazing... thats what we need today in games. better than shooting around =)

Co-op adventure gaming is a lost art

Monkey Island logic at it's finest. If at first you can't succeed - use the pistol for insta-win.

I remember when I was half way into this my dad walked into the room was going to ask me something but I said, DAD JUST HOLD ON, and he just stared really confused at the computer monitor at what I was doing.

This is a priceless part of video game history.

One of my favorite scenes from this game, specifically the ending. I must agree though that you should have included the intro ("I choose the banjo.").

Here in Uk, there has been a re-release of all lucasarts adventures, and they cost £10 each. As for the 2nd one, I've got an Italian version for Dos and an Amiga version in English (which i found in a charity shop).. but use eBay to find them as Zacirus said

You shot my banjo! No matter how many times i play this that never fails to crack me up. I feel so lucky that my friend gave me Monkey Island 1 and 2 (already had No. three)

Even the licks they were playing are completely different than Dueling Banjos(the song they played in the movie which is a very fun song to play).

I noticed Van Helgen doing Jimi Hendrix moves on his banjo (ie. playing behind his back) when he plays real fast and being a big show off and right before Guybrush shoots his banjo.

I was stucked here when i was a kid. I was trying to remember al the notes instead of only the last one :(.

I know! It took me days. But that's just a testament to how much this game made you think. They were great like that since the game play never became repetitive and you were actually *thinking* in order to beat it. LucasArts rocked the box on that one. I'm gonna buy it again.

could you please upload the story each pirate tells guybrush in the barbershop? Also the whole poker game with that crazy guy and the conversation stemming from 'you're mad!'

Iirc you didn't even have to wait until Guybrush plays it through but just hit the strings in the right order. ^^ Helps with remembering.

@akarkesel1989 I would assume the following: all the melodies (and improvisations about them) were deducted from the monkey-island theme. As musician myself I learned this banjo-rolls and combined them in different matters. The main point is: melodies do not need any songs. A song is mostly an elaboration of music-ideas (themes, melodies a.s.o.), its harmonies and form could be also deducted from those smallest parts of inspiration.

Awesome line, that.
