    "Money" "Us and Them" Dialectical tension. Guitarist pedantry: Gilmour used a Binson Echorec, not reverb. That's an old magnetic drum delay unit. It's better than reverb. The first solo is double-tracked - not ADT, he did it manually (ie: two takes of the same solo). He doesn't use reverb FX in his live rig. There's probably some room 'verb mixed in with the DSOTM take. Gilmourish and Kit Rae are the best resources for Gilmour-heads

    Those blends of Fuzz Face, Colorsound Boost, Univibe, with the Echorec, is just a beautiful sound. The Echorec will Sound like there’s reverb too, although they may have put some in post, but he also used a weird processor for the tremolo effect, and a synth processor as well. He really knew how to get the most out of his gear. *Shout out to Gilmourish! He’s definitely the go to for those sounds and gear.

    @Toxic Potato I'm hopelessly biased so it's not like I'm saying it is objectively better (except, of course, it is :D ). The thing about Echorecs, Echoplexes, all those old drum, tape, oil-can delays (and so on...I think I got al the heavy-hitters...Roland Space Echo has reverb as well I think) is that once you've dialed in a few tones the Reverb pedal tends to sit on the shelf. A good analog delay can achieve a similar result, but with actual tape delays, if the tape is clean it's remarkably Hi-Fi. That's why Davey G. went digital with his MXR rack units in the late 70s- to get that clean tape Hi-Fi thing without the hassle of using real tape. I'm not an expert. Bjorn at GIlmourish has all the gravy on DG's gear. Kit Rae for BIG MUUUUFF (that came later)

    The correct quote is "The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil" - "money" itself is just an object that a group of people ascribe some value to, but an inanimate object is not itself capable of anything. The same way that a hammer can be used to build or destroy, it is about the intent of the hand that wields it. A shout into the void to post this, but it bothers me when people don't get the quote right.

    What is money but something made to be worshipped and hoarded though?

  • @jaredlinna1371

    @jaredlinna1371

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@caiograciano7562 What is that comment but a lazy platitude? Nope, money is just a means of exchange whereby both parties have a rough agreement about the underlying value. It’s pretty hard to function on a barter system when you only have cows and your neighbor only has chickens - they’ve got to give you a whole lot of eggs and nuggets to equate to a cow. How convenient would it be if there was a third product that both acknowledged had value (either due to the rarity or because of some other usefulness of the material) and could use that to exchange if partials or multiples of chickens and cows? Oh, and super awesome if that thing is compact and more portable than either cows or chickens, cause then you or your neighbor could go to the next town to by their produce, or home goods, or whatever. To your points specifically, I don’t think that money is the exclusive thing that fits that definition, and that definition being “true” is dependent on the intentions of the individual, which was the point of my original comment. Do people “worship” money? Certainly some (or maybe a large amount) do. But are they worshipping the item money, or the qualities that they believe that it can imbue - such as power, status, freedom, leisure, etc.? People have worshipped those things before there was some sort of formalized value exchange. Sacrificing an animal at the edge of a field to appease some deity in hopes of increasing a crop yield or keeping hail, frost, or all other sorts of malady away, isn’t that different than giving up family time to chase after a promotion that may not come. There are more extreme examples, but that might suit the point. But money itself isn’t the thing of focus, and it is still reliant on the individual to decide to be a proselyte. And that it is made to be worshipped, that depends on people acknowledging that point and choosing that system. The Great Sphinx may have been “made to be worshipped”, but how many people wake up and offer up prayers or sacrifices? Maybe some cause it’s a curios world, but I doubt the plurality. Again people have a choice in what they worship. And “to be hoarded”. I am also certain that there are those that want to hoard money away, but that is not what Is happening for the most part, or at least not in free countries with capitalism-based economies. Do banks keep giant swimming pools filled with cash so that their evil, mustache-twirling, monocle-wearing owners can take a dip, hoping to stave off the inevitable creep of old age? No, not at all. Most banks in the world only keep between 5-15% (there is a sliding rate based on risk criteria and the relative importance of the bank to the overall financial system) of their deposits as cash, and the rest is loaned out to businesses and individuals. It’s this cash being able to move and flow that creates opportunities and improvements in society. I’ve tried this experiment a few times now (and feel free to try it for yourself. Good science should be repeatable after all), and I’ve tried with several different denominations and currencies, but if I close up two dollar bills in an envelope and leave it alone for a while, when I come back and open the envelope there has never been an additional unit of currency. No pennies, dimes, quarters, or baby dollar bills. I’ve tried leaving them sealed up for different periods of time, tried playing all kinds of music to set the mood, but no matter what I do it is always the same result. So it seems to me that if you want to increase wealth, hoarding seems a bit counterproductive. And even more so if you consider that inflation erodes the purchasing power of money over time, so hoarding actually leads to a decrease in your overall wealth. Again, it is about the individual not the object, and it is disingenuous to place fault for a person’s actions at the feet of “money”

    money is such an odd song for how popular it was. 7/4 time, using real sounds as an instrument. yet the 7/4 doesnt sound unfinished, and the cash machines sound great, and the song overall has an outside of a song about money, and how it is good, but underneath it is about the problems with money.

    Could you make this a series? Looking at the theme of specific albums and the deep dive into its creation and I love how informative and interesting this is and I'm not sorry to say that I would give all my money for more....but my money is all right back so keep your hands of of my stack.

    Thanks so much for these videos! Amazing work for my all-time favorite album. Roger Waters' tour a couple of years back, where the band played nearly the entire album, was by far the greatest live music experience I've ever had.

    One thing is missing though, wich is easliy look past behind Gilmour solo, is Nick drumming on the dry part. After staying on a heavy groovy beat on the wet part with its fair share of pure Mason style fillings, he guiets down, stay on his mark a few bars, then starts building with fillings that quickly becomes the closest thing we have in Pink Floyd studio discography to a drum solo, wich ends with the start of the last part.

    The early pink floyd discography has some things that are much closer to a drum solo than this, such as the actual drum solo from the "song" called the grand vizier's garden party

    Money was my high school senior quote. Ive always loathed money and capitalism and I contribute that to the lyrics in this song. Its amazing how a couple lines of poetry can shape how you view society. Thanks to Pink Floyd Ive lived my life away from the control of money. Thanks for this video. The Dark Side of the Moon was my favorite from like 17-20. Real formative years. This series on the album is bringing back a lot of long forgotten memories. Cheers

    Everyone always focuses on the stuff you can buy with money while ignoring the most important thing you can buy with money, that being freedom from having to sell 40 hours a week of your life for a place to live and something to eat.

    While Dick Parry played his solo in 7/4, they had to change the time to 4/4 because Gilmour wasn't able to deliver a solo in 7/4. So much for "showing off his guitar prowess"...

    Nebula is actually an attempt to pull away from the greed that drives a platform like KZread. My entire life on KZread is an ongoing battle with copyright hell because of KZread's desire for money, and how they pony up to big labels worth billions of dollars. In order to run KZread, KZread takes ad money from any who will pay, and KZread demonetizes conversation about sex, drugs, politics, etc. for Money. And also all of your browsing data, KZread is selling for (gasp) Money.
