Monetary policy

Monetary policy is controlled by the central bank using the manipulation of interest rates, the money supply and exchange rates. The key objective of UK monetary policy is to maintain price stability, with an inflation target of 2%. Expansionary (inflationary) monetary policy attempts to increase aggregate demand by cutting interest rates. Contractionary monetary policy attempts to decrease aggregate demand by increasing interest rates
