Monet’s Giant Water Lilies is one of the Finest Ever to Appear at Auction

The star of our upcoming Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale (12 May | New York) is one of Claude Monet’s finest large-scale ‘Water Lilies’ paintings ever to appear at auction. In this episode of Expert Voices, Sotheby’s Chairman Helena Newman explains how Monet’s most iconic images inspired generations of artists to come. We also discover the incredible infrastructure that enabled Monet to create these monumental late works and find out which famed Hollywood producer later owned the present work. ‘Le Bassin aux Nymphéas’ will take centre stage in our New York May Evening Sale, alongside works by Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas and Pablo Picasso.

What a gift. What a man. I will never forget the first time I saw Monets paintings. I wasn’t prepared. I cried when I saw The Magpie. My jaw dropped and I couldn’t stop the feelings. To me personally he is god of artists. I really get him..

I went to Monets gardens and house in Giverny in France twice. It is amazing, like walking through his paintings. In his house there is also a room filled with all his paintings (a mix of replicas and his actual paintings). Soooo impressive. If you are ever close to Paris go visit Giverny, I promise it is so worth it!

@JONATHAN SUTCLIFFE my friend I have been an artist for close to 40 years, been to a lot of major museums worldwide, your company's contribution to the art world is 0. All the auction houses are in it for money. You promote it to get more money. Truth hurts my friend. I bet you don't know Monet from Manet. You are an auctioneer. We have a lot of them in TX, selling cows.

No doubt Monet was a great artist, but auction houses do not truly understand his artistic talent and abilities. Basically, they look at art works like they are stocks, bonds, or investments. The monetary value, they understand, but not the artistic value. The problem is that our society thinks the dead artists are great, and we neglect the living ones. It is a fictional perception of who a great artist is. Monet actually achieved fame during his lifetime, but many great artists did not. This notion betrays the essence of great art. There are some who are exceptional living artists even now. The idea that an artwork by a dead and especially famous artist, even posthumously, is great is nostalgic and romantic. Unfortunately, we do not appreciate many artists till they are gone. Of course, some are praised, and there are always exceptions.

Of course, you get your commission. Say what you please. A lot of praise has been showered on him for these very large pieces, but his best works were done before these. His murals are big and decorative, but he had done much more impressive paintings before. I am an artist, and have studied him along with other impressionists extensively. "Expromantic Art."
