The 420 is a similar boat to this one and is great to sail as well in these kind of conditions, especially with no waves

He uses the rudder like a fish uses its tail. Works in small boats to get a little speed.

It's called 'sculling', been around for centuries. Same as an Italian gondola or the last bit up to a wharf or pier in a long boat. The oarsman 'Ship' their oars and the coxwain/helmsman steers and if need be 'sculls' a little withe the 'sweep oar'. A Laser can be 'sculled' home in a calm by tying off the tiller at center and getting up in front of the mast facing aft. Then rocking the whole boat back and forth you wind up 'fanning' the sail and 'sculling' the rudder. You can steer by how much force you put into one side or the other of your oscillations. This is all very similar to the video where he is reaching. He let's the boat gently heal, then rocking the boat to weather and 'pumping' the main he creates a 'sculling' or pumping/dynamic motion (a lot of work!/kudos).

I love sailing, but the way that racers jerk the boat around seems unnecessary and abusive to the boat. It's more fun to just cruise it.

  • @team3383

@Scott Shirey: Same thoughts here. These guys look as if they are ANGRY sailors, pulling, jerking and pushing everything hard. HAlf of it is SHOW for the cameras and half is because it actually works in strong winds. Try sailing like this is mellow winds and you'd be laughed at. The new breed of sailors think its necessary to make a show of the whole stronger wind things - no "finesse". I know older sailors who would sail in style in circles around this guy.

It’s not unnecessary, it’s faster. And racers want to go as fast as possible

I see your thinking, but the jerks are necessary to go faster. the faster the jerks, the faster you go. cruising is cruising, racing is going faster
