Mondale Trade Ad '84

Walter Mondale, the Democratic nominee for president in 1984, talks protectionism in this ad. It's very a very similar position that Donald Trump would advocate in his 2016 campaign.
Mondale lost the 1984 election to Ronald Reagan, who believed in Free Trade, by a 49-1 state blowout.

Mondale maybe talking in a manner similar to Trump but he would have never governed like Trump. I think Mondale would’ve still kept the status quo

Mondale had been President. Their would had been tariff's on products that America was making already domestically and placing tariff's on items similar but isn't made in the USA. I personally believe he would had given incentives for modernization of manufacturing including where the wages they pay more would be used to reduce tax bills. I believe the Mondale manufacturing policy would be similar to West Germany and no George H.W. Bush, No Clinton, No NAFTA, No Michael Moore, No Obama, No stricter EPA policies. A few more coal mines would still existed. A few more percentage of Electricity at Geothermal, Biomass, Most vehicles at Natural Gas Already and a little more by Electric. Also by now the sunbelt getting much of their electricity from Solar, Geothermal and Biomass on top of Oil and Gas. The east coast, west coast and midwest using electric rail for trains beyond the mountains and many rail lines ripped would still be in use instead of useless bike trails or overgrown weeds. The mistake by Reagan and both parties in charge of the House entirely by Dems or the Senate by Dems and Repubs was to not begin slowly encouraging the development of using Alternative energy sources on the side of Fossil Fuels. Imagine if FDR lost in 1940 to Wendel Willkie and he decided to not irritate Japan with a Oil Embargo and Asset Freezing over indochina. The US would had gone to war after discovering plans for extermination by Hitler and would had been a front page headline and cries for war to end extermination.

No. Trump TOOK Mondale's along with the rest of the Democratic Party's message of the 1980's/90's/2000s & put a conservative/nationalist rebranded spin on these traditional Democratic talking points very successfully. The Dems went along with right leaning legislation all throughout the Reagan/Bush years & even while Clinton was President in the 1990s. Clinton lost both houses very early on in his Presidency which forced him to move from being a center left moderate Democrat to becoming a center right moderate Democrat. The GOP along with their policies throughout the neo-liberal & neo conservative era set the woods on fire as the Dems went along mostly with them. Trump and his MAGA cult blamed the Dems for setting the woods on fire while it was themselves voting for conservative policies all throughout the Reagan years who set those woods on fire. The one's who started the fire are telling us they can put those fires out. The Democrats aren't totally innocent though. They went along with this garbage for many years to stay politically relevant. The newly rebranded MAGA GOP currently has revised history very much to their success and claims that it was the Dems who destroyed the working middle class the last 40 plus years or so in this country even though it was their reaganomic policies that did so..

@@matthewlombardi7685 no it is the Democrats who revise history, not the GOP. It is the Democrats who lie about their history claiming that there was a party switch in 1968 because Democrats can’t boast about their own history. Since Democrats can’t boast about their own racist history, they instead hijack thr history of the GOP. Of course most of those Biden cult members who are too stupid to think for themselves believe it. I know because I’m more educated than you. No Democrat has ever thought for themselves and I know it. It is not in dispute. You have never thought for yourself. I know you better than you know yourself.

@@JonathanMoosey Judging from your response you're not more educated than me. Yes, the Dems have a dark history but this does not change the fact that the modern MAGA GOP has revised their past history on the Reaganomic policies which have destroyed the working middle class.

Many protectionists fuse that issue with racism, like Trump. Mondale refused to do that.
