Monasticism

An introduction to Christian Monasticism. Don’t stop here though! This is like introducing a continent of beauty and truth. There are so many wonderful monastic saints and writers to explore. Also recommended: visit an Orthodox monastery and chat about life, faith, and anything you might hear on Patristix.

One thing that you missed to mention is that the liturgy of the Orthodox Church, the whole way we worship, comes directly from the monastic practices of the monastery of Mar Sabbas next to Bethlehem in Palestine. Monasteries are so central in the Orthodox Church that without them our worship would look very much different.

And the plethora of hymnography that has been produced by saints such as Ss. John of Damascus, Kassiani, and Joseph the Hymnographer. It can be said that when the west began to focus on the seminary/academy/university is when it lost the spirit of the east where the focus and teachings were/are always centered around the monasteries.

I was baptized and Chrismated in the Church last year on Pentecost, and just went on my first pilgrimage with my parish to Holy Cross Monastery in West Virginia. What a blessing it was. All of the preconceptions I had about monks being cold and standoffish were quickly dispelled. Every father I met there was so warm and welcoming, and full of God's love!

One cannot sufficiently thank you for your video. Having been partially raised in Europe, I saw the outstanding accomplishments of the various monastic houses. In returning to the USA and hearing bizarre stories & flagrant lies, I defended the houses - and, I was a liberal protestant. One was amazed in college to find professors spitting out the same & they just couldn't understand how I could defend them. Later, after entering a Benedictine house, I grew in love with the hours and have continued with them since 2005. It's my strong desire that your channel continues and is markedly successful. Pax

I'm a recent catechumen, weighing the options of marriage and monasticism. They are both very beautiful. I think I should finish my catechism before even thinking about committing to either of them, so I still have a couple of years, but at this time I'm not sure how I could ever choose one over the other. Perhaps it will end up being a calling, rather than a choice.

As one who has worked the path of discernment between these two paths and is about to make the big move to live out my choice the best guidance I can give you is this. For now focus on the path of catechism to develop a manageable balanced prayer life, I know there is a temptation to go all in with everything but follow the guidance of your priest of a simple rule you can do now and keep doing, this can be expanded over time as you grow spiritually. Be involved in your parish and make friends of your own age of both genders this will help you with the process of recognising which path you are called to, it is also worth visiting monasteries and meeting real monastics, many parishes run organised pilgrimage or can link you up with your local monasteries. As one abbot I know well says you know in yourself which way you are called (it is just a matter of recognising it with your spiritual father) the discernment) is who to marry or which monastery to join. You may also find it helpful to watch video by monastics on their way of life and on church things more generally, a good channel for both of those is Mull Monestery.

It seems a really strange and unchristian ritual.
