Monarch Q & A: How to tell a male from a female monarch butterfly (or "boy" from "girl")

Know the secret to tell if it's a male and female monarch butterfly? This video will get you in the know!
More questions and answers to come. Let me know if YOU have a question!
Male monarch butterflies have a little black dot on each hind wing. If they released pheromones (an attractive scent) like many other moths and butterflies, it would be produced by those organs but monarchs don't really produce pheromones that we're aware of.
Female monarch butterflies have heavier veins, or black lines, on the wings. Why? I've got no idea but it's a fact.

    Thanks for the info. I've got a question for you. I found a monarch in the road he seems unable or unwilling to fly the temperature is just under 55 degrees F. I put him in a shoe box on top of an old T-shirt I have. I put a bit of banana near him and a tiny cup with sugar water. But he is just sitting there with wings closed. He is outside underneath my eaves. Will he be okay ?? What else should I do. Thanks for any help you can give me.

    First, thanks for your kind heart and concern. I think you've done a good job getting it warmed and offering it food. I know my my monarchs took watermelon and I just read that cantaloupes and grapes (cut open of course) will work too. If it warms up, you can put it out and see if it'll fly away but my guess is that it's at the end of its life. They normally don't live more than about 2 weeks as adults. Where are you?

    @@earthnatureanimalslove I figured Florida or California, because monarchs are not in many other places right now; at least in the US. It's likely a monarch that is overwintering in Florida, so keep it safe as long as you can! It made it there and you might just help it make it through the winter! Let me know if it's eating anything!

    I’m raising monarch butterflies now and I’m noticing I am having 10 to one male to female ratio. Is this normal or just coincidental? Thank you Vinny from Long Island New York

  • @singingzoo

    That is interesting! Gender is determined genetically in butterflies as it is with us. It's the female's chromosomes that do it though. I suppose that means it is random chance that you have such a skewed ratio but it is uncanny.

    @@singingzoo well some one said it helps to make it a little easier to emerge guess it's like putting moisture cream on your skin but it has been so hot and I just very lightly gave a light mist and 4 enclosed the next morning at close to being 8 days as a chrysalis.

    Do the male and female monarchs have to meet to produce a baby monarchs?

  • @singingzoo

    @singingzoo

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, a set of genes/DNA from the male and a set from the female combine. After the egg has been fertilized in this way, the development of the new caterpillar begins.

    The best thing you can do, other than ordering caterpillars from the University of Kansas, is just to make sure you have milkweed out, especially when monarchs are peaking in your area. For Texas, that's March and October but it could be different for you if you live elsewhere.

    This is just for monarchs, although the spots on the hind wings are seen in many butterfly and moth males, as they often produce pheromones to attract females.
