The idea of having that in one application is stellar. The customizable groups are awesome too. One can essentially create their own chart of accounts for their home. A nice to have would be retirement planning. Does it have that too?

    Glad you like it! The forecasting is great and so useful! No, it isn't great for retirement planning. If you knew how much you wanted to save for retirement, it would give you a basic calculation of how much to save each month, but it wouldn't take into account investment growth.

    You can hide accounts! You can set it so the transactions from the hidden accounts to feed through to your transaction or set it so all transactions in those accounts won't affect your budget or cash flow reports. You can set up a category and sub categories specific for your rental which would be very useful for tax time!

Nice job....I have been researching budgeting programs for days so I can leave Mint and it is very hard to find enough information about each one to tell me what they can actually do before you pay. Thank you! Glad you liked the video! Yes, when you write a note or details for a transaction there will be a little note icon that you can hover over and it will tell you what your notes were. For example, I will put what the Amazon purchase is actually for in the description so when I hover my mouse over the note icon it will show me what it was. I think you would have to click on the transaction for more details if you are inside the mobile app.

Coming over from YNAB and very excited to be able to forecast income. I'm a business owner, and had two totally separate budgets in YNAB- one for our personal finances and one for my business. Any recommendations on how to do that in Monarch without having two different accounts? Thanks!

    Unfortunately, you do have to do two different accounts for Monarch. It's a bummer, really. YNAB's ability to do two totally different budgets in the same account is really awesome. If you were to try to do it in the same account, you would just want to make a whole group for business expenses, just like the preset categories are set up. But it can be clutters. If you have a lot of business expenses, I recommend having two accounts for it.

My work always reimburses me for travel expenses a few days after the end of each month, so in Mint I used to manually assign that payment to the last day of the previous month to make everything add up. Thanks for this review! EveryDollar user here wanting to move to Monarch. Question, do you know if it's possible to set the start date for the month on a budget? As a freelancer I have multiple sources of income that come in at different dates every month, but I do have a main one that comes in mid month, so I've set up my budget mid month to mid month. But Monarch automatically places transactions in a budget for the whole month. I'm trying to find a way for a Dec 9 transaction to fall in the Nov budget, and Dec 16 transaction to fall in the Dec budget for example.

  • @evolvingmoney

    @evolvingmoney

    7 ай бұрын

    As of right now, you can't set a budget outside of the usual months. You can generate reports now (beta) for those specific dates. Ideally, you want to work to get 1 full month of expenses saved in your checking account so that you don't need to worry exactly when you get paid or when bills are due. If you think about it, most people don't get paid on the first of the month. A lot of people get paid bi weekly, which means their paycheck hits at odd days of the month and is different every month. Being self-employed means you normally get way more paychecks and in various quantities on random dates, but the goal as a freelancer should be to try and get to a point where you can pay yourself a regular monthly amount, and anything more or less adds to/reduces your savings. This will help you maintain a budget and simply your finances soooo much!

I highly suggest getting out of budgeting paycheck to paycheck as fast as you can by creating an emergency fund because creating a budget each paycheck that is an additional, unnecessary stress and hassle to life. Obviously, it can take time, but it should be a goal. If that is the direction you want to go though, I would consider YNAB as it is better for budgeting as money comes into your accounts.

    I think I forgot to show this in the video! You can set any category to "rollover" to next months if you don't use the expenses. So I budget $ into travel, car maintenance, medical, annual subscriptions, home improvement, etc and whatever you have left at the end of the month in that category will rollover and build to create your sinking funds! You could do this with every category or a select few. This would be shown on your "Plan" in Monarch

    Just switched from Mint and never really came up with a good way to do this. How do you conceptually find yourself tracking "transfers" to brokerage accounts, HSA's, IRA's? Do you track the (-) as a cost to a budget and the (+) as a deposit? Treat them both as a transfer so they balance? I'm not sure how to think of these transaction in long terms.

  • @evolvingmoney

    @evolvingmoney

    8 ай бұрын

    In Monarch Money, there is a category for Transfers and Credit Card Payments and both are treated as "transfers" which means that they won't affect your cashflow or budgeting statements. This only really works if you connect all of your accounts that your are transferring to and from to Monarch so that it can accurately portray cash flow and net worth. Marking as a transfer is ideal when sending funds to other accounts that you own.

    Thanks for this! My husband and I just got married and are looking to merge finances. The biggest hurdle is our "no questions asked" fun money. Can you make parts of your budget private? If I want to get him a gift or spend money on something frivolous; how do we separate those transactions in the app? We already decided on an amount that each of us can have for "no questions asked" purchases, but how do you really make it private if you're in the same account?

  • @evolvingmoney

    @evolvingmoney

    5 ай бұрын

    I would use separate accounts or credit cards that are not connected to the app for this. Lot's of my clients have a personal bank account that they each get money into every month and can spend how they want. It would be up to either partner to not connect those personal accounts to Monarch. Otherwise, you could always change the Merchant name once the transaction comes through Monarch to hide any surprises.

  • @evolvingmoney

    My husband and I both have our own credit cards that aren't connected to Monarch but the payments are coming from accounts connected to Monarch and we trust that the other partner wouldn't spend more than what is in the budget for Personal Fun Money.

    So after attempting to set up a budget, it seems you CAN'T delete a category altogether without moving the options within that category. I really don't like having unused categories just sitting there doing nothing. Is there a workaround for this? I don't need a Business category for my budget.

  • @evolvingmoney

    @evolvingmoney

    6 ай бұрын

    In order to delete a category, as you stated, you would have to change all transactions that have that category to a new category. Otherwise, you cannot delete it. So for the business section, I would delete every category within the Business Group and they will get all grayed out as you have de-activated them all. Then when you delete the Business Group it will prompt you to move all of the de-activated and grayed out business categories to another section. I always move these to the "other" category section. You won't ever see them unless you go into your settings to active them again. I will do a video on this very shortly with a deep dive in setting up and organizing categories!

    @@evolvingmoney So I’m a long time budgeter with EveryDollar but they stopped supporting SoFi to import transactions. In ED I had everything broken down… Under ‘Bills’ I didn’t lump all of my streaming services into one category, I had a specific line item for each individual streaming service with the exact amount for each budgeted. I prefer my budget to be really dissected, it’s always helped me.

    Thank you! Add that last part of the link in your MORE section so that it's available to everyone. You have a great start to your channel. Consider doing a step-by-step tutorial on Monarch- a series where each video breaks down features and how to best utilize them. It's a prime moment to do this since Mint is disappearing and people are seeking options. And some of us benefit from very detailed, step-by-step instructions, from signing up for the first time to learning the desktop vs. the cell phone interfaces!

    Thank you. This was great and very informative. Many of us are looking for a Mint alternative. Question, will the linked transactions come in with any category type kinda like Mint? Unfortunately this has a fee but good results are not free. Maybe explain 🤔 why paying a small fee could save you a lot more if you are unable to track your finances.

  • @evolvingmoney

    @evolvingmoney

    8 ай бұрын

    Thank you! Glad you liked the video. To answer your question, linked transactions will be categorized in the best category that Monarch assumes the transaction is or the category that you set up as a Rule. For example, an Amazon purchase would get to the Shopping category and Mcdonalds would be Restaurants and Bars. You can set up Rules in monarch to have those transactions be recategorized to anything you want automatically and change Mcdonalds to a category called Work Lunches or something. Does that answer your question? A YEAR subscription from Monarch is sometimes less than the MONTHLY interest you could be paying on a credit card. If your budgeting app helps you reconsider $100 worth of purchases in the year, than it paid for itself, and if you use the app diligently it is normally much more than that. You have to be looking at your budgeting app regularly. Weekly at least. I tell my clients to either pick a day like Sunday afternoon to look through their spending or budget AND every time the buy food at restaurants. These triggers will help you save money by creating more awareness about your spending.
