I was videoing a Monarch Butterfly on Goldenrod when a Yellowjacket flew up behind it. To my great surprise, the Monarch slapped its wings together on the stinging insect, scaring it away. The butterfly then went on drinking Goldenrod nectar as thought nothing had ever happened. I have had my "encounters of the wrong kind" with Yellowjackets (properly named Paper Wasps) and I can tell you they have a severely painful sting.
