Cats have a built in relaxation trigger in the neck skin. The babies feel safe when they're carried like that. I've seen vets put a clamp on older cats' necks too and they lie down completely still and relaxed, while the vet examines them.

SHeesh! I can't get over all the hateful comments on here! First people are making hateful comments about where the person that filmed this lives. Then, people are making hateful comments that she didn't help the kitten. Good grief people! No wonder our country is in such trouble! I'm sure she lives in the best place she can afford, OK? The point of the video was how cute it is when a momma cat carries it's kitten to a hideaway; not the condition of her property. I've seen worse. All that is so unnecessary. And as for the kitten, a mother cat is more than able to move her kittens to a warm, safe place, given the chance to do so. You saw it took her all of 2 minutes to get this one moved. These are kittens; not human babies. When we intervene, we rob he mother of her chance to do things naturally, and the kitten of its chance to learn from its mother. Let nature take its course, people. And please, be kind to other people. Let's not tear one another down for no reason.

I always thought momma cats carried kitties by the scruff of the neck but apparently kitties are tough enough that momma cats can pretty much carry them however they want. Only time I saw it was with my old cat. She kept her kitty in the basement for a few weeks and then one night I got woken up as she ran into my room mewing and mewing and I didn't know what was going on until I turned on my light and saw that she had carried her kitten up to my room and was just trying to show me and she was so proud of her kitty.

Steely Dan Your statement is totally false. Baby kittens are of little weight and there for it is safe to gently scruff as the mother does....However we are humans and NOT the mother cat. Scruffing a cat that is over 1 lb can cause muscle damage if not properly supported from the underside of the cat. In addition you are conveying your dominance over the cat. Beat course of action....NEVER SCRUFF A CAT unless absolutely necessary.

Also, I do not understand people commenting on this video calling this animal abuse. So ignorant yet so quick to judge...cats carry their young like that. How do you think animals take care of their children in the wild? Do you think they pick them up with their non existent hands and plop them in a stroller to get from point a to b? The mother cat in this video saw that the kitten wasnt with all of the other babies and wanted to bring it back to safety. Either the mom cat was bringing the kittens to a new spot and the person recording got the last kitten relocating or the person recording took the kitten from the box and the mother kitten got worried and wanted to bring it back. Either way, this video is so adorable!!

I'm guessing she is a first time mommy cat. Even cats has a learning curve when becoming a mommy. She'll eventually learn that carrying her kittens by the scruff of it's neck is the best method to carry. And all the dumb dumb ones who are commenting that this is an abuse need to get their blind sense of justice checked. No mother in the animal kingdom would do that. Humans are the only ones who abuse their young, and hence, those who abuse their own kids are worse than animals.

+isyi Actually no. Quite a lot of animals will actively harming their young. Mammals are already one step above vast majority of the rest animal kingdom in the sense that most mammals do care for the young to a certain extent. However, in group living animals such as wolves, lions and monkeys, it is a rather common occurrence for adult individuals to actively harming the young. Humans is really the only animal on the planet can actually recognize the behavior as wrong instead of relying on instincts to protect their offspring. Please don't believe into the whole "animal is nobler" drivel. The whole concept of morality is a purely human invention and there is a reason calling someone an animal is an insult.

+isyi Of course it is not abuse. All felines carry their young that way. Feline's skn is only loosely connected to the muscle underneath and the skin at the back of the neck can be hold between mother's teeth without harming the kitten. My disagreement is on the idea of "Humans are the only ones who abuse their young".

Yeah learning curve indeed! My cat ripped the skin and fur completely off to bone on a newborn kitten! I mean it was pulled down like a sock. I pushed it back up, laid her down with mom and it healed perfectly somehow and now that lil girl is my love.

Her carrying technique needs a little work, but she found a nice, safe place to hide them!

I heard a lot of people saying: OMG ITS IN FILTH. It's a barn cat! They will have their nest wherever they feel it's safe for their babies. I have seen them in rafters of barns (and rain kittens) to being under a concrete hole in a porch.. Considering she's inside, in a warm box, its long enough she can be comfy with her babies and there is no sharp pointy bits. IF the farmer tried moving them from the nest she'll flip him off and move them back.

When I was a kid we got a tabby from a farm. He was such an awesome cat...he could jump up and open the screen door by himself to let himself out. I remember trying to leave for school and he would jump on my backpack and hang off of it. Unfortunately his adventurous barn cat spirit got the best of him and my dad and I were driving and saw him on the road down the street from my house and he had been hit by a car :(. edit: my dad stopped and picked him up so we could bury him btw, we didnt just leave him there :(

Not only carrying the place they pick them from basically deactivates the babies so they don't cause any trouble

This reminds me of when my black cat Gabby had kittens. She was so mellow she would let me handle her newborn kittens. I pet them, but never messed with them. One day I got curious so I brought one of the babies downstairs and place it on a blanket. Little guy started crying really loudly, and guess what happens? Momma came racing down, picked him up, and than put him back. She never once moved her kittens (they were in my closet and I had lined it with blankets and towels for her) but jeez if a momma cat doesn't come running for her babies.
