Momigami From Magazine Pages: How to Distress Magazine and Coffee Table Images PART TWO

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

(Actual paper folding starts at the 7.15 mark.)
Momigami is a traditional Japanese paper technique that turns paper into a gorgeous soft paper. Today we look at a way to turn ordinary magazine pages and glossy images from coffee table books into momigami papers that you can use in art journals and other mixed media techniques.
PLEASE NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT TO COAT YOUR PAGES IF THEY ARE GOING IN A JOURNAL, OTHERWISE THE OIL MAY LEAK ONTO OTHER PAGES. Try acrylic gel medium, a coat or two of PVA/craft glue/Mod Podge, etc., and be sure and test before gluing into a new book. WHEW!
If you have any questions or feedback, or even ideas of ways to use momigami magazine pages in our work, please get in touch in the comments below.

yOU have encouraged me to get up and try new ways to make pages and papers for my journal. I am in the middle of a journal for a beach trip and I think this is going to be a great background for some of my drawings as a framework. it will give my drawings the feeling of being found in say a message in a bottle since my page looks like or is cut to be a bottle that will open to find hidden happenings on our adventures and to write little notes to our children about what my husband I did and how those things reminded us of the time we spent with them at the beach and I will be adding some of the pictures of them as children on the beach. I am going to print the pictures on paper and laminate them so the kids will have pictures of all of us and the joy they bring to us. That is how I want their childhood and our family and the time we had in the past. not that we are expecting anything or that our health is in question but I know I wont be here forever. Thank the universe I cant take anymore of these 12 yr election cycles and all the division and depression of this time in my life I dont want them to even think about the now when they get these books.

Amen to that. Here in the UK we have an election in ten days and while it is bonkers we do not have the hate and division as in the states. (But it is bonkers, all the same.) Your journals sound a delight and I often encourage people to see them through the eyes of grandchildren or other young people who will find them Someday. It would be a good idea to add a coat of something, pva or gel medium, to make sure the oil doesn't stain pages near it. Test it out first. (I am only finding out about this the hard way. 🙄) All the best! Kelly

Hi Melissa. This is a good idea and I will try it later today. I'm afraid that holes are inevitable but you can always own it and integrate them into your cards for texture. Take care that the paper is "cured" so the oil doesn't leech into the card you attach it to. Try sealing with some pva or gel medium or other, or blotting, or heating - or just time.

Lori, traditionally a plant based starch is used but it is not very effective with papers that have a glossy overcoat. Oil will leech out, at least at first - it should cure in time.
