In this Physics (Mechanics) video lecture in Hindi for class 11 we explained momentum. Momentum of a body is the product of its mass and velocity. It is also related with force. The rate of change in momentum is called force. To grow an intuitive sense about momentum remember, it is more difficult to stop a body with higher amount of momentum.

Why Is momentum not the addition of mass and velocity ? Why it is the product (×)of mass and velocity ? Moreover , multiplication is also repeated addition

Bcz if we say P=m+v now lets assume m=5units and v=0units So by the formula P=m+v P=5+0=5units But we know by observations that if velocity is zero then force must also be zero hence momentum essentially shud be zero but in above case velocity is zero but momentum is 5 this is not possible hence P=m+v is invalid formula for momentum

• Some interesting points about momentum - 1) The ability of massive body to stay in the motion to produce a force or gets affect with the force. 2) Momentum is the simultaneous effect of mass & velocity of the body while in motion. 3) For body at rest possesses no momentum but when it has to comes into motion then momentum matters. 4) For the body in motion, the momentum presents its capability to transfer & gets effect of external force. 5) Higher the momentum change for a given instant in time, higher is the force. 6) Transfer of momentum needs external force to impose for at least an instant. 7) Higher the momentum of moving body, higher will be the force needed to affect it within comparatively short instants of time. 8) Momentum is directly affected by the direction of external imposed force from instant of time to finite period. (Hence, both are vectors parallel for acceleration & anti parallel for declaration.) 9) Momentum is affected proportionally whether force acts continuously in time or shockingly for instants. 10) As momentum is simultaneous product of mass & velocity, an external force can change it in two ways - i. Mass rate at constant velocity, ii. Velocity rate at constant mass. (As velocity rate presents effect of both magnitude & direction.)

Hi sir..... thank you very much for your excellent explanation..... But I have a small doubt.....that 1kg =9.8N.....so how it took 10seconds time for a person constantly applying 1N force when the momentum was 10kg.m/s ..... because 10 kg will be equal to 98N..... Please help me to clear this concept 🙏
