Moment Tory MP Natalie Elphicke defects to Labour during PMQs

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Tory MP Natalie Elphicke has announced her defection to Labour in a statement released moments before Rishi Sunak stood up for Prime Minister’s Questions.
Ms Elphicke said she had left because the country needs to “move on from the broken promises of Rishi Sunak’s tired and chaotic Government”.
In a statement, the MP for Dover said she was angry that Boris Johnson had been “ousted” by the party and that under Mr Sunak, the Tories had become a “byword for incompetence and division”.
A spokesman for the Labour Party said Ms Elphicke would be stepping down at the election and that the already-selected candidate in Dover, Mike Tapp, would still stand for the party.
Ms Elphicke sat just behind Sir Keir Starmer during Prime Minister’s Questions as the Labour leader came face to face with Mr Sunak.

For all those wondering, this MP is not wanting re-election and is unhappy with the Tory government. If Labour want a landslide they need to be a broad church of views. I despise her beliefs, but see the political decision made.

It’s irrelevent how short a time there is before the next general election. During a parliament isn’t it bad enough yet alone undemocratic for MP’s to defect to another party that’s different from the party they were representing at their election? If Natalie Elphicke was unhappy with the Tory government shouldn’t she have - in proper consultation with her Dover constituency - either resigned her Tory whip, stood as an independent or quit altogether? However it’s not rocket science to understand why another right wing Tory MP defects to Starmer’s Labour ‘just like that’. All it says is many right wing Tory MP’s regard Starmer, who via the NEC removed the whip from elected Labour party MP’s like Corbyn and Abbott and even removed the Labour membership of an actual elected North Eastern Labour Mayor Sean O’Driscoll, as being a more reliable right wing leader than their own! If any MP party defection has to take place at all which would make far more political sense these days it would be Starmer defecting to the Tories via the proper official channels of course. The current twenty five odd point lead Labour has over the Tories is not down to Starmer’s alleged ‘changed’ Labour Party and its useless aspirational reformist policies. Isn’t it down solely to the rotten decayed state of 14 years of failed Tory government?

Yes MPs are elected on a wider party manifesto but the MP is also answerable to the local voters alone. The MP is not answerable to the party leader but the people who put that person in Westminster. If Elphicke listened to the local constituents and felt they had shifted on whole from Tory to Labour AND she had concerns about a frankly corrupt and contemptuous government, then why should she not defect?? Makes no sense at this late stage for defection by-elections, but frankly we need a general election. All MPs who want to leave the sinking ship can do so and we would get a government more in touch with our needs

It won’t help him when the ancient house of lords which is full of unelected people who don’t have a clue how to help our country. To give an example,my great grandfather was Lord Serre,a French chemist who invented dry cleaning and lived in the UK until his retirement when he moved back to France for the rest of his life. I gather he wasn’t completely fluent in the English language ,so why give a man,a genius in chemistry no doubt which I’m very proud of,but not in the politics or understanding the British people ,a life peerage ? Like most people in the House of Lords ,I’ve no doubt he meant well but was totally unqualified to play politics. The house of lords gets more and more like a Nursing Home where people are sent to live out their days in politics without having to be voted in so that anything goes. As for Lord Cameron,he resigned when he couldn’t get his own way in Brexit but all of a sudden he has the nerve to accept a job and entry to the House of Lords in order to squirm his way back into politics without being voted for. An absolute disgrace but he won’t be crying all the way to the bank anytime soon.
