We like to do rose, thorn and bud at dinner time. Each person says what their Rose was (best part of their day/something good that happened) what their thorn was (something bad or disappointing that happened) and and what their bud (something that they are looking forward to) was for the day. It can be very insightful!

Letting your kids interrupt! And teaching them how to do so, politely. I know too many parents who are not interruptible to their kids. We also have code words for in public when the kids are out of line. Saves them the embarrassment of being publicly corrected.

Your dress is so cute! One thing I recently started doing is pre making cookie dough then freezing it in ready to cook balls. This way we don’t just have a ton of cookies being eaten because we will of course eat them all if they are there. And it’s fun for the kids to be like “hey let’s cook some cookies!” And then they can pull them out of the bag, put them on the cookie sheet and watch them cook. And you can make exactly how many you need vs the whole batch at once. I also alway double batch any kind of baked goods, sauces, soups, chili that kind of stuff and freeze so have on hand for days I’m too tired to cook.

Love these tips, my mom hack and go to baby shower gift for new moms is to use a dimable Himalayan Pink Salt lamp for nursing/diaper changes at night. Not harsh light that wakes you up, dimable is key! We now have them in the kids bedooms for night lights and i have one on my night stand to have a soft glow at night.

Margaret your videos just feel like home. ❤ I'm so excited for the video about dresses coming up! 😁 One of my favorite tips right now is to focus on what my child *can* do when they're upset. Instead of telling my toddler just, "don't throw that!!" I'm learning to say, "when you're upset you may not throw things. You may come give me a hug and you can cry." She melts from an angry, confused girl into a sweet ball of hugs and I am here. for. it. 😉

So inspiring to create an intentional / calm home for my family!!! Also, Arts and Crafts, getting some paints out, painting with their little fingers always helps my little ones (4 and 1 yo) to calm down. Also, including kids in house chores, let them help with everything (even if they mess up or slow us down) is a great way to get them involved, help them learn and make them feel like they are capable and they are part of the team.

Our 4 year old needs to inhale often and nature documentaries make him sit still and learn so much about our world! Of course the TV is not our nanny, but it can be calming and educational. It really is great advise! So much better than cartoons. x

Not a mom, but I nanny (youngest is now 10). Mornings arent her favorite time of day, but sending her off to school with a "You light up my life!" always gets her out of her funk. We also turn anything into a game, making things up as you go is fine and inventive! We also love traditions, albeit small, and she looks forward to them. Converse, converse, converse. Love your gentle style, Margaret! I see Jesus in you.

My favorite mom hack (now my grandmother hack as I help raise my four grandchildren) is to use a timer for everything from my own productivity to disciplining grandchildren to showing fairness (taking turns with toys) - let me explain… If I have a job to do, I’ll use the “Pomodoro method” -work for 25 minutes and rest for 5 minutes. During that 25 minutes of work I am laser focused & don’t let myself get distracted (when the timer dings I set a five minute break timer) then I’ll work like that for about a 3-4 hour time block in the morning take a lunch break and then get back at it for another time block using the Pomodoro method again in the afternoon. The children have learned to ask me to set a timer to share toys, Xbox time etc. this helps them with negotiating their own emotions and self control- when the timer dings they just hand over the toy, Xbox controller etc… it has taught them fairness when they see everyone gets treated (loved ) equally by Coco (that’s what they call me!). Using a timer for discipline and time out helps settle the children when they’re really emotional. They have been taught to be quiet during time out or I add minutes to the timer while they watch (sometimes the older boys try me with disrespect and when they see me adding minutes without drama they quickly learned the meaning of self control). I love using the timer for my own productivity because I find myself trying to beat the timer by finishing the task before the timer dings!

Love this! I'm a mom of four (9, 7, 4, 1) and appreciate your insights! Something that has been very helpful for myself as a mom and for my children is our daily routines. I've used routines to give some healthy structure to our days since my first baby was born. They don't have to be set in stone, in fact I appreciate that we can use routines with some flexibility and still reap their benefits. As my kids get older (especially with homeschool) routines help our days flow well! Definitely will be using the affirmations you suggested! Love Sally Clarkson's books too 😊

Thanks once again, beautiful doable tips. A questions raises in my mind: why are we always mentally agitated? I never experienced something like that in my childhood, yet today every kid needs to calm down and help with that, sometimes professional help. I meditate every day sometimes twice a day, otherwise I feel things so intensely. Is it technology? Lifestyle?

@margaretmatheny - I don’t normally comment but a great way of calming children down in my family is we grab hands or hug. And together take ten deep breaths, in through the nose and out the mouth. We often will count together. Physically, this helps the Vegas nerve reset. Once we’ve done this - both of us are calm. Then we can talk. I have three children ages 11-5. This has helped us a lot.

Always be careful of which behaviors you are rewarding. If a child cries because they want a toy at the store, and you buy the toy, you have just reinforced the crying behavior and it is more likely to happen again. If your child cries because of a thunderstorm and you are excessively comforting them, you are reinforcing their fear of thunderstorms. Better to just talk with them about the storm to help alleviate their fears. This one is tough!

Let it sit and bloom for 5 minutes then turn the heat on. When the edges start to bubble a tiny bit, stir, take it off the heat, and put it in a glass cooking dish/container. Let it cool for 20 then stick it in the fridge for 3 hours to form!

How many gummies do you give your kids/ yourself? My 4 year old would probably benefit from more protein.

Love this video! What is “I spy”? I’m from Argentina and I don’t know how the (game?) is. Thank you! ❤️

One person says, "I spy, with my little eye, something (color)." Then other people in the car try to guess what they saw. "I spy something green." Is it grass? Is it that car? Etc.

I have so loved listening to your videos, but I find that I can’t anymore because there’s so much advertising. I didn’t understand how your first tip (love this) was to go outside and ground with the kids and your second tip was a vacuum cleaner that you like ? This is the fourth video I’ve tried to watch but can’t make it through a few moments without an ad.

I thought the relaxing guitar music would be helpful to my kids but it made my daughter sad and she did not want to listen anymore. Anyone else experience that with their children? It seemed odd. I’m trying to make sense of it. It’s a small thing but surprised me.

My 5 year old feels emotions with music! Some days are more emotional than others. If I'm noticing he's sad, I just type in happy, relaxing music. Catering to their emotional needs is so great, you're so aware!

@@margaretmatheny my daughter is 6 so similar ages! Good idea to put on happy music. I’ll try that. She is definitely one to feel her feelings. It’s good though!

Praise the effort, not the result. Instead of saying, "Yay, you won the game!" say, "Wow, you worked really hard and look what happened!"
